[News] Late For Work 9/18: Time For Ravens Offense To Be More Aggressive

57 posts in this topic

"Even though the pass protection was poor and speedster Breshad Perriman was absent, Brown said the Ravens shouldn’t concede they don’t have a deep passing game."

Forcing long passes no matter what, might be even more harmful than avoiding those deep throws. If the O-line doesn't give Flacco enough time for the pass, those may gonna go for interceptions. And then what are you gonna write, Mr. Brown? "Sorry, that was an awful idea on my part?"

Let's first make the O-line function again, and then decide whether it's gona be a long pass or a short one - or a run play.

Both of Oakland's starting safeties are out, so if we don't start throwing deep and exploiting that, shame on us. Doesn't matter there is no Breshad Perriman, the rest we have ain't crippled, they can get deep. Marlon Brown is not only big, he's also an athlete. I saw the dude jump and to get that high I'd have to walk up two flights of stairs. He doesn't need as much separation as a lesser WR would. Also, he fights for the ball and is subject to SSS mentoring. Give the guy the opportunity and I think we can get were we need to be.

"If the Ravens play as poorly offensively in Week 2 as they did in Week 1, they are capable of losing Sunday at Oakland,” Brown wrote. “That would make the Ravens 0-2 for first time under John Harbaugh. And that would make this opening road trip West a colossal failure, especially when you consider that linebacker Terrell Suggs (Achilles injury) has already been lost for the season."

Ahhh... i happen to remember how you and some other outlets were so spectacularly giving up on the team after the Denver outing in 2013... and then we won the next two games.

Mr. Brown... how about... dunno.. maybe some faith? Talking about a 0-2 start and colossal failure long days before a single snap was taken in the second game? Jeez... I can understand writing stupid things pout of frustration... but a journalist??? 4 days after the source of frustration?

That can only happen if the O-line start clicking and playing like we expect them to play. If they don't give Flacco enough time to make proper throws - and the WR's to get down deep - it doesn't really matter who the safeties are...

The more and more I hear about how we stunk, the more I want our boys to destroy the raiders. God I'm fired up,

Very True. If you look, almost every throw was not only rushed but thrown off his back foot while still backing up. He literally had no time to throw.

I've said it before this was Gary vs Gary.  They knew exactly where Joe would be going at exactly which times because of the coordination of the footwork.  So Broncos or Ravens vs Texans Falcons or each other will be problematic for birth teams.

I have been saying the offense needs to be more aggressive the whole time, but it's not about forcing deep throws. It's about spreading them out, picking up the tempo, and lettng Flacco throw more on 1st down, where he was very successful in Denver. In the 2 min drill, we went right down the field. Before that, Flacco was 5/5 on 1st dwn attempts, with 4 of those completions leading to a 1st dwn conversion. Look at Denver last night. They were awful, Manning had no time, and they went to an up-tempo, spread offense, and they came alive and wore out the pass rush. A "ground and pound" offense severely limits us. Spread it out, put it in Joe's hands, like we did in our SB run, and the pass and run game will be much better off.

I agree with you. Two things - 1. I hope our OL will hold better against Oakland. Sorry, dunno how their front seven is. 2. I know Crockett Gilmore can catch, but so can Maxx Williams and one thing Crockett is consistently better at is blocking. Look at him, he's a monster. There are plays where a TE and a FB can help the line hold. Our guards, KO and Yanda are solid so all we need is help on the outside. Why not let Crockett and Juice help get the job done and let the receivers + Maxx and Boyle go catch?

Does not do much good to compare Ravens to Chiefs vs Broncos. Chiefs had better preparations because they had a full game tape from first game (Able to draw up better game plans from game tape) instead Ravens having tapes of partial off-season games with off-season plays. Ravens traveled to Denver while Chiefs were playing at home with Broncos having to travel on short days. Both teams were manhandled by Denver's passing defense (Chiefs did slightly better in passing thanks to game tape preparations), both teams could have won, both team's mistakes on interceptions cost them the game despite being under real pressure on passing. Alex Smith had a rating of 118.6 the first game but falter to 53.9 against Broncos defense. Broncos defense is the real deal. I hope we play Denver again if we make the playoffs, this time with actual game tapes and experience to get better with better game planning.

Man Marcus peters has been looking really good. Had a pick week 1 and a pick 6 last night. Almost had a few others too. In the next year or 2 he's gonna be one of the leagues top shutdown corners. Wish he would have fallen a few more spots- I think he was definitely on our radar at the top of the list.

As far as the offense - all you Monday morning qbs and offensive coordinators out there need to leave it to the professionals. You are going off of 1 game , against a very good defense in which are o line didn't hold up very well . Before you put all the blame on the receivers and continue saying the running game sucks how bout you just give it a couple weeks huh? If the same issues are going on after week 4 against Pittsburgh then we can talk. I personally think we will be fine and just need to get get the ball rolling. Once we start to mesh as a unit and get a feel for the offense it's gonna be all she wrote guys. And I've got a feeling that tali is gonna be a pleasant surprise this year.

We never saw any screens to rb, or bubble screens to wr, or slants, no blitz beaters last week, can we not adjust?

made no sense to me. I thought a wr screen or a screen to Forsett or buck would have been perfect way to get in the endzone on that last drive in the redzone. It seems like we just panicked instead of collectively moving the ball and using strategy. I wouldn't have minded a run once we got down to the 10. I mean damn we had Atleast 4 tries at the endzone. Throw a draw out of the shotgun in there and see if Forsett or buck can punch it in. Buck was running the ball well too.

I remember the pundits said "if Tresman could not do it with the weapons he had with the Bears how is he going to do it with this Ravens crew?"

I'll throw in draw plays as well. DEN loves to get into the backfield quickly. KC had some really nice draw plays last night. That's one way to get the ball into the hands of your RBs and have them get into space and do some damage.

I'd maybe agree ... if he was an OC in Chicago. I'm pretty sure he wasn't.

Besides ... his main problem was defense and Cutler's periodic meltdowns.

Worst offensive game plan and in-game adjustment I have see for many years as a Raven fan. Yet if we just don't turn it over, we still win the game. The interception looked almost intentional. There was no pressure and no reason to think Smith could have caught it. He was blanketed by Talib. Joe could have run for 5 yards that play. It looked like the game was fixed and somebody forgot to tell the defense. One attempt downfield over 20 yards???? Sounds like somebody wasn't trying.

I'll take having the O line not get run into the ground. If they can hold up even a little we might be able to make something work. If Oakland plays super aggressive by bull rushing set linemen and blitzing, we can burn them with quick passes, screens, draws etc. but only if we have some measure of protection.

When you get run over the way we did last Sunday, you can't even effectively run those classic plays that are designed to beat pressure. People are in the backfield in a split second. We tried last week and the few plays that worked were still a massive struggle and other ended up being disastrous.

Talib look like he was running the rout not Steve. Steve ran into him and looked like he gave up but did not tell Joe. Look at Brown wide open down field.

Didn't they have a few screen passes to Juice and one to Aiken(and he lost a yard),  I even remember the commentators saying something like " passes like that are designed to slow down the pass rush, but it doesn't seem to be helping. "

JanuaryJ...thanks for the positive thinking. I have read so much gloom and doom lately I really have a bad headache lol. Time will tell what this team can do or not do. No one is expecting us to win every game anyway and this schedule is a back breaker. Go Ravens.

Let's not forget that despite all the offensive shortcomings, we were in a position to win the game last week. A Steve Smith catch or higher throw to Crockett Gilmore would have done the trick.

Agreed, and don't forget we were 5 point underdogs playing away and Manning was playing in his favorite time of the season.  Frankly I was stunned to see us one of two possible catches from winning the game.  Although other evaluators are moving us down a bit in the power rankings this week due to the loss in my rankings I moved us up a touch since we were so close.

Don't forget, the mighty Broncos had all kinds of trouble tallying yards and points. That says something about our defense. Of course we're going to struggle with a new offensive coordinator. This game vs. Oakland should be much easier to throw the ball and get yards and points, too. Hopefully, we'll use it to learn more about our team and especially the offensive strategy going forward. I look for this game to be in hand by the time the 4th quarter starts. And just maybe we'll figure a lot of things out against that porous Raider defense.

“That’s like taking a Ferrari on the freeway and doing 55,” wrote CSNMidAtlantic.com’s Clifton Brown.

Nothing about this offense is a ferrari at the moment.

and we're STILL trying to blame this on Flacco who only did exactly what every quarterback should do on that play....

screens in the redzone against man coverage and draws against blitzes are teh perfect way to get negative yards, especially against pro bowl corners.

I think we could have won the game with a draw to Forsett instead of that pass to Gillmore. They wouldn't have expected it, and even if it had failed we would've had another shot. But yeah I was really hoping for a run right there for some reason. I didn't mind going to the tight end either , but I think it should have been a shorter route and had him fight his way into the endzone. Oh well, shoulda coulda woulda. Edited by January J
