[News] Late For Work 9/17: Breshad Perriman Expected Back In October, Mark Clayton Has Some Advice

98 posts in this topic

I'm glad the topic of trick plays have come up at least. Some of us have been saying for a long time that the Ravens apparently gave up (or forgot about) trick plays completely... I remember when Koch passed to Cary Williams instead of a punt at 4th & 10 v. the Dolphins 5-6 years ago... Or Rice passing to Ed Dickson for a TD instead of carrying the ball in Seattle in 2011... or Koch converting a fake extra point to a two-point conversion v. the Steelers week#1 a couple of years ago... and we can all surely remember Tucker's run attempt at 4th & 8 in the Super Bowl... And that was about the last trick play I can remember we attempted... three seasons ago. As far as I can remember, the Ravens went two full seasons without one single trick play attempt. Dunno the relevant stats, but this must be the least in the NFL... And meanwhile, the opponents ran a good couple of trick plays on us - most of them successfully... Just the Jags made two trick plays on us in one game last season...

Don't get me wrong, I don't say we should try trick plays every time - but zero in two seasons and counting? Trick plays aren't only fun to watch and memorable, but can also be crucial at times. I would definitely welcome some...

Agree, bio.  Even if NONE of the trick plays work the demonstrated threat of them tends to keep defenses from teeing off on the obvious runner, or, even worse, on Joe in the pocket.  Getting rival defenses to hesitate just a half-second is enough time for Joe to get off some of those passes in better shape than the 'hurries' he was being forced into last game.  Hesitation by the rival linebackers also lets our runners get a half-step on them - often all they need to force a miss or a poor tackle as they burst through the line.

How is it that the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to draft Speedy WR's not in the first round year after year and also have quality running backs and the Ravens can't buy either one?

Guess you missed watching us last year, huh?  Justin Forsett, our 'bought' main runner, only set records and helped make the Steelers look like chopped liver in the playoffs.

I like this way of seeing it. I'm gonna see it this way too.

I think ultimately with a few outlier exceptions like Kindle (which btw, I don't think was his fault that he had that freak accident), Elam and Clayton, with Ozzie you do get what you invest in.

Whenever Perriman's knee does cure, we're still looking at a guy with the frame of an Andre Johnson but the straight-line speed of Chris Johnson. If we stay patient we may find later in the season that he was well worth the 1st round investment.

Agreed.  When all of us on this forum talk about Perriman we focus only on his straight-line speed, which is impressive.  But what I like most about the guy is what he does in the first second after the snap of the ball.  For the brief time I was able to evaluate him I had never seen a receiver shake his defender so fast.  He was wide open virtually at the snap of the ball.  I half expected to see the defender looking around for his shoes.  I know we are all looking for his talent on long passes but he may well wind up being most valuable in the 5-15 yard range moving the first down markers.

Why put that video of Babin up there. That's about as cheap as a cheap shot gets! I've seen him make some great tackles. Put those up there! Look, no matter how much I hate everything about Pittsburgh FANS, I've got respect for Ben. That's one heck of a tough guy, and darn good QB.

Nope.  You're wrong.  Ben could easily have avoided the hit if he tried.  He clearly was looking for the foul.  Getting hit was a good tactic to get a foul called on a charging lineman whose face was buried in the gut of the offensive lineman.  Ben's only miscalculation was that the hit would be so hard.  But that's on Ben, not Babin.

Not sure PUP ever made sense, because then he wouldn't be back until at least November.

It appears he will beat that by a good month, so that would have been a waste.

wouldn't have been an option anyway, as he was injured the first day of training camp making him ineligible. However we could have used the return designation on him instead of urban- but as you said it wouldn't make much sense because he will be back far before then anyway and it would have been a waste.
