[News] Late For Work 9/17: Breshad Perriman Expected Back In October, Mark Clayton Has Some Advice

98 posts in this topic

How is it that the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to draft Speedy WR's not in the first round year after year and also have quality running backs and the Ravens can't buy either one?

And how come the Ravens have still had more success tha past good couple of seasons? ;)

BTW, talent evaluation os a tricky thing. Just like we don't seem to have someone who is really good at assessing WR talent, theree are organizations that doesn't seem to have a guy who can tell a good QB prospect... Seems like the Steelers have a very good WR talent evaluator, I guess that's all.

As for "quality running backs" - they have exactly one: LeVeon Bell. How alone he is was best demonstrated by the fact that wehhen he was out for the wild card round game against us last season, the offense that was the best in the NFL in the regular season, was suddenly mediocre at best. There was no depth behind him.. So much, they had to bring in Tate, who had already been cut by two teams in the season...

The 1 trick play by the Ravens I always loved was the Troy Smith pass to Flacco in '08,  a truly exciting, totally unexpected play. Flacco made a really sweet grab. That was the most shocking and unlikely trick play I can ever recall from the Ravens. No way I see the coaches taking a risk with Joe today as a receiver but it sure was fun when they pulled it off.

At this point I decided I treat him like he's on the season ending IR - and then the only surprise that can happen is that he comes back and that's gonna be a positive surprise...

I like this way of seeing it. I'm gonna see it this way too.

I think ultimately with a few outlier exceptions like Kindle (which btw, I don't think was his fault that he had that freak accident), Elam and Clayton, with Ozzie you do get what you invest in.

Whenever Perriman's knee does cure, we're still looking at a guy with the frame of an Andre Johnson but the straight-line speed of Chris Johnson. If we stay patient we may find later in the season that he was well worth the 1st round investment.

It's that old adage about Belichick being the genius who got Brady as the 199th pick. What people forget is that Belichick, like everyone else, also passed over Brady 5 times before picking him.

So great, the Steelers unknowingly struck it rich with a hard working Antonio Brown for instance. But no one wonders why they passed on him 5 times before drafting him themselves.

But the Steelers can't buy an O-lineman, Pass Rusher or Cornerback despite using 1st & 2nd Round picks on in almost every draft. Ravens make their money on knowing O-line & Defense - which, as Bio said, makes a better overall team that wins in January.

If the offensive line can't provide Joe with more than 3 seconds, does it really matter if we have a speedy deep receiver? I don't recall ANY rookie with times under 4.0

Hmmm...possible October return for Perriman...Game at Steelers is Thursday, October 1. How awesome would it be if he made his debut then and torched the Steelers weak defense!

i am hoping for the best; but the gut tells me, perriman is a bust. ravens need to find receivers with speed and can break away.

Really? A "bust" before he even plays a down. Give the guy a season or before you start putting him down. We haven't even seen him play a down in the NFL. That's not right. He's a first round draft pick with plenty of natural talent, and a high ceiling. Let's see how he does in a game (or ten) before putting a label on him.

If a guy gets injured, it's nobody's fault. Things happen. I'm not ready to close the book on Breshad at all. He is a talented guy who had a run of rough luck, and as soon as he's healthy I believe he is going to do very good things. Expectations are way too high on this guy. Relax, and wait till he plays to start making judgements from your desk chair

It's understandable that a few fans are impatient about Perriman but I have a feeling we will all forget about the missed games by mid season.

Thanks Mark Clayton. Now all we need is to get Kyle Boller in here to advice Joe Flacco, and Sergio Kindle to each our defense how to tackle yourself down a flight of steps and we're golden!

I will be impressed if Babin nails Big Ben without a flag coming in week 4. As for Perriman, amusing that some fans lack patience and throwing the towel in the ring. He is only 22 years old, going to give up on the fastest man in the NFL already? Unless his injury is career ending which it isn't based on news reports, I believe he has several years ahead of him in the NFL based on not missing any college games that I know of. Let's look at top 10 WR 2015 draft picks in week 1.

A.Cooper (Oakland) - 5  for 47 yds against Bengals,

K.White (Bears) - Possibly out for season after surgery that repaired a stress fracture in his leg.

D.Parker (Dolphins) - Did not play, has foot issue and probable for next game.

Perriman (Ravens) - Will miss games due to knee issue.

J.Strong (Texans) - Practiced with 2nd team, did not play first game.

P.Dorsett (Miami) - 2 for 45 yds against Bills.

DGB (Titans) - Zero targets against Tampa Bay.

D.Smith (Jets) - Inactive due to rib injury, may play next game.

N.Agholor (Eagles) - 1 for 5 yds.

T.Lockett (Seahawks) - 4 for 34 yds.

Out of top 10 WR picked in 2015 draft, 4 did not play due to injuries, 1 did not play due to not being good enough for their team, 1 was not targeted whole game. 4 caught passes in first game with the best catching 5 for 47 yds, not exactly eye popping. Bottom line, I am glad we picked Perriman, give it time, no other rookie WR has set NFL on fire yet, be patient and give Perriman a chance to play a few games in NFL when he is ready before passing judgement.

On a side note, the top two ranked NFL defenses after week one is Denver (#1) and Ravens (#2). Let game one offensive line performance be an aberration because it was against the best defense in the NFL in week 1. Have faith in the Ravens offense that they will do much better as season progresses.

I just don't understand people calling him a bust.  Let the kid play a season 1st before putting any type of label on him.   Funny, the guy you quoted asked for "receivers with speed and can break away."   Torrey Smith, a receiver w/ speed and can break away, had 1 catch for 11 yards on Sunday.   Perriman hasn't played a game yet and has one less catch than Torrey.  LOL.

Ever notice when we hear that a team has to sign a guy like Taylor Mays and the "secondary is in shambles" that these guys play like HOF'ers against the Ravens. Think back to the supposed laughers that became criers.

The REAL question here is, with Suggs out for the year, who's the last Raven out of the tunnel for home games now?

Knowing Flacco would rather someone else do it, SSS or Jimmy Smith? Brandon Williams dance moves?

I was thinking that perriman would make it back for the home opener but if he's not even running by tommorow that's not happenin. Looking more and more like week 4 against Pittsburgh will be the return date. Will be the perfect time too, a crucial divisional matchup against a weak secondary. Seeing as how that will be October 1st, that sounds about right. He should definitely be 100% by then and light it up. Anything longer than that and I imagine we would have done something differently and IR'd him or something.

If you think about it , he really wouldn't have made a difference in Denver anyway. Well I guess we could have thrown him a screen or something and could have busted it open with his speed, but as far as a down field threat it would have done us no good bc flacco didn't have time to let those deep routes develop anyway. Won't really need him against Oakland. Not that I'm sleeping on then, but I think most will agree we have enough players available to get past them rather easily. Would be nice to have him for the home opener , which is still a small possibility, but a week 4 return against our rivals Pittsburgh during primetime will be the perfect venue.

Let's hope Babin won't do this to Roethlisberger this season - because this is a 15 yard penalty...

This is true and I agree. But, we don't seem to mind having bunches of other stupid penalties each and every game. So, he might as well hit him. What the heck.

The report by Aaron Wilson says they expect Perriman back "by" October, not "in" October. There's a difference.

Also, I'd like to see our offense spread the Raiders out and exploit their secondary, as opposed to running on every 1st down and putting Joe in obvious passing situations where their pass rush can really get after him.

The ones who said Torrey smith should've been resigned, 1 catch 11 yards.

If he catches 10 balls for 150 yards and 2 TDs against the Steelers, doesn't the narrative change?

No possible way we say we made the right decision based on one game...

Pretty much what I have been thinking since last week, when Hensley brought up the idea that he wouldn't be back until October.

Between the fact that there is no tape on Perriman playing in the NFL and the Steelers have a questionable secondary that could be a big first game for him.

Thanks for this.  Puts a lot of things in perspective.
