[News] Reports: Ravens Sign Pass Rusher Jason Babin

99 posts in this topic

If we get 4-6 sacks out of him, it will have been a good move, as i expect Upshaw to really be a 3 down OLBer now....and Babin to come in, on certain packages.....

That's possible with Upshaw, but he goes in and out with Dumervil, who it must be assumed can't set the edge on runs. While missing Suggs for his pass rushing ability stands in the forefront for attention....we are losing an edge setter for the run and if it's always 3rd and 1, due to not stopping the run, then we are in trouble. So IMO we need a run stopper just as bad, and putting Upshaw in Suggs place opens the other side. I'm sure the coaches are more aware of that than I am, I'm curious how the deal with it.

Harbaugh left Philly to join the Ravens before Babin was with the Eagles. I imagine Rex Ryan was asked his opinion on Babin as well as any contacts coach still has in Philly.

I doubt that very much beside ""Babin, 35, was released by the Jets at final cuts after managing just two sacks in 16 games last season."

A player may not do great under one coaching staff, while excel his talents under another. Just going by gut feeling, I think Harbaugh felt Babin was the 'right fit' for this team/situation and the Ravens coaching will be able to utilize him better than previous franchises have. Thus previous stats are not as impacting on decision as what coaches here see with their own eyes, AND the veteran status they wanted, because veterans know things from experience rookies have yet to discover in NFL caliber play on the field.

He's 35... I think they did it for the veteran presence, yes... but I still believe that it should be A "Raven" that provides the leadership.

Hmmm... stats-wise Babin was the least intriguing option - but we can't know what shape the others were in - and that may matter far more than past stats.

Also, I gues we should trust the coaches and Ozzie that they picked the best available guy. Any of them would have been a sharp decline compared to Suggs - as is gonna be Babin - but you don't replace Sizzle anyway... So, I gues that was the best that could possibly be done to minimize the effects of his loss - plus I still hugely trust Pees to further reduce it by modifying the schemes and stuff. Pees has been one of our truly unsung heroes of the past couple of seasons, he's more than earned my trust.

I was kinda dreaming this situation would help lure JJ out of retirement - after all, he's already with the Ravens again :) But yeah... dreaming :)

Lets remember it's one year at veteran minimum. If it does not work out, they get rid of him.

He spent last year in Rex Ryans system which is similar to what Pees uses as far as schemes and probably terminology. He also attended a training camp this year so he wasn't sitting home for several months not playing. He can play this Sunday if needed, as the other options might have to get up to speed and playing shape.

At this level I guess every single staff has connections to every other one - guys the GM or HC can just call any time for some informative chatter...

He better do good because you know Elvis is now going to get double teamed.

A good DC can turn it into an advantage... and Pees is a good DC.

Yes, but can he play left tackle?

No kidding I'm hoping Monroe is back for the Raiders game. He needs to stay healthy as does the rest of the offensive line. I would almost would have rather had Osemele at left tackle and had Urschel come in at left guard over Hurst's game play against the Broncos. Also Wagner looked terrible as well he needs to pick it up.

Ravens play against a back up quarterback and against a defense that is missing both starting safeties. A team that lost 34-0 to Cincinnati. I like our chances.

That is not a far fetched dream. And still possible maybe when Taliaferro returns (dump a RB form the roster). J.J could be the run stopper that we may still need. Keep Upshaw and Dumervil on one side, and Babin and J.J. on the other.

Well, J Babin IS a Raven now, and while I know you are most likely referring to an established veteran on the team, there are MANY leaders in the locker room and on the field, on both sides of the ball, I think that is one problem that does NOT exist on our team is lack of leadership... :)

Far be it for me to question the OZ, but BABIN?!? REALLY?!? A guy who can't even make the Jets practice squad. I hope my consternation is unfounded! GO RAVENS!

"Far be it for me to question the OZ" - and then you go on questioning him... Maybe it wasn't so far for you after all...

If you say you trust him - why don't you actually do so? Trustung a guy's expertise means believing he does the right thing even when you don't think so. It's easy to trust anybody until he does what you think is right. Real trust shows when he does something you think is a mistake. So, for you, it's a perfect case to show your trust in Ozzie - simply by accepting his decision ;)

can Babin play the position? From what i've known of Babin he always played DE, never heard of him playing standing up. For some players that is a hard position change.

I guess we can trust the coaches and Ozzie that they chose a guy who can play the position - after all, they are all qualified and experienced way enough to judge that ;)

Suggs was a OLB/DE hybrid. When the Ravens went to go franchise him he argued to the league that he should get paid like a hybrid player because of the snaps he played at both. 3-4 outside linebackers a lot of the time are defensive ends. Ask Phernell McPhee he played OLB for us when he was a DE in college.

Thank you for correcting me I didn't see that it was just a bruised thumb... He left the game because of a bruised thumb.... So glad to have Flacco. The bruise is on his throwing hand so hopefully that leads to bad throws. We do need the offense to start going though because they need to get something going before that Cincy game.

No doubt about it. Getting a ground game established has to be the priority let see if ZO can lower his shoulder pads
