[News] John Harbaugh Likes Steve Smith As His Punt Returner

65 posts in this topic

It's not an issue if SSS can be a good punt returner, I think everyone agrees on that.  The question is SHOULD he be doing it?  Emphatically, I have to say NO considering the current state of affairs of our WRs.

BTW, Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't see most of the first half but didn't Campanaro field the 1st couple of punts vs Denver? IF so, why was he pulled?

steve feilded every single punt return and camp did every KR if im not mistaken.

I like today's mailbag response to this. SSS is our best playmaker. You put your playmakers on the field where there are opportunities to make plays. There is some additional risk to injury, but you can't play scared of the injury "ghost" as they put it.

757RavenFan we have enough wide receivers to take a chance on SSS, next man up remember that ? We do what we have to do for the betterment of this team. Move on

Have you seen the 2014 stats of the WRs behind SSS?  If SSS were to go down due to an injury, we're in deep doo-doo.

exactly. it seems like people are scared to put anyone back there. scared of injury to sss. scared of injury to camp. well someones gotta do it, and id prefer it be someone who makes SMART decisions and doesnt muff the ball. you saw emmanuel sanders out therew doing it. antonio brown does it. other teams arent scared to put there best player out there, and we cant be either. hes the best option and hes earned the right to decide if he wants the job or not.

They both cited (as did this article) Sanders and Brown remaining as punt returners. I think there is an even better example. Jarvis Landry returned both punts and kicks last year. This year, with the departure of Wallace, he became their WR1. Just before the start of the season, they announced he would not this year (presumably, because if injury risk). After 3 quarters of listless football, MIA was in a 10-10 tie with Washington. Coach decided, to heck with this, I need someone to make a play. Landry went on the field to return a punt. Took it to the house.

MIA wins 17-10.

You put your play makers on the field to make plays. SSS can stop returning punts next year ... when he's retired.
