Should Carl Davis take Cantys spot?

41 posts in this topic

We have seen that davis is playing like he did when he was motivated. He's been awesome in pre season and in the first game against evan mathis no less

for me its clear where our true strength lies..it's in starting these 3 in the middle

Jernigan Williams Davis

Canty is not 2008-2011 canty and aside from leadership I don't see what he has to offer that i haven't seen in davis or jernigan.

I have had time to think about the suggs injury and while it hurts, its more on an emotional and football IQ basis. He may have played his last elite season last year. He looked pretty bad in pre season and in the game vs denver,

its now about embracing 3 young guys who have the tools to change where our pass rush pressure truly lies and thats down the center.

Jernigan is only second to aaron donald in the 2014 class

Carl Davis is nasty. He's been far superior to Williams and Perriman so far.

But Carl has endurance issues.

That's why you have a rotation which both Guy and KLM playes well in.

Couldn't agree more. Leadership and Urban's injury are the only things that kept Canty on this team for me, but that doesn't mean he has to be a starter. He played well but Davis was close to dominant. He flat out man handled Mathis on more then one occasion. Jernigan, Williams and Davis will definitely be the most dominant grouping with Guy, KLM and Canty rotating in is how i see things going.

Eventually, yes, but I don't see it happening just yet.  Besides, it's really only starter in name only.  Canty played 46 snaps while Davis played 34 snaps.  That's not a huge difference and it's something that I imagine will get closer together in the coming weeks.  One of the biggest knocks on Davis was him not being able to handle a full workload.  I imagine that's something we'll try to improve as the season goes on.  The switch will happen eventually, but not just yet.  It's going to be a heavy rotation regardless.

I kinda like the rotation TBH. The strength of the team is the DL and we rotate our DL to keep them fresh. It's fantastic that our DL can apply pressure and stop the run the way it does. I definitely think we need to find a way to keep these three guys together (Jernigan, Williams & Davis) if they continue to impress like they have.

Honestly, Davis starting isn't really that important to me.  I think the DL rotation is far more important.  Just making sure they're fresh and making plays should be the ultimate goal.

BTW I Brooks is an awful DL coach and should never be a DC and especially not a HC. Just in case some teams are out there looking at coaches to poach from this team. Please, take someone else but not Brooks. He's just not worth your time.

Need to get a fire Brooks thread going, that could help ;)

This. Keep our guys fresh. Starting on our d line is essentially just a title. D line personnel will get their reps.

And while we're at it, how about those horrible linebacker coaches on this team? Other teams should just completely stay away from Ravens positional coaches on defense.

I honestly was thinking about this last week.  It's only a matter of time before someone calls him for a DC job.  I'm surprised we kept him as long as we have.

I hate to kick Suggs when he is down but he didnt look like he was in playing shape nor does he sound like his head is in it anymore.

I dont know if I would go that far, but the run stopping and pressure we were able to get yesterday DESPITE Suggs not registering a single stat puts my mind at ease that we will be able to absorb this loss.

people forget that suggs has been playing in the nfl since 2003..most of the guys his age were drafted in 2004 2005 and even 2006.

he has  a LOT of mileage. What we will miss from him the most is communication on the line..which is important..Daryl smith might have even more responsibilities now

Honestly, I'd say keep Davis right where he is for now.  Jernigan, Williams, Davis is a top heavy rotation when KLM, Canty, Guy come in behind them.  Jernigan, Williams, Canty is still dominant and it leaves little drop off when KLM, Guy, Davis come in (and yes I know they all don't sub at the same time)

I am pretty sure. See attached link for picture from game showing green dot on helmet.

Goes to show you that the transition to the new era of Defense is almost 100%. I am excited of our foundation of:

Davis, Williams, Timmy, Mosley, Jimmy, WHIII (w/ potential of A Brown & Brooks). Those guys (if healthy) give us a great foundation for the next 3-5 years (Is anyone over 26 yrs old in that group?!). Just need the next edge rusher and a young corner - whether these guys are already on the roster or not is unknown.

I think our D line is barely hitting its potential. As usual injuries are robbing us of seeing what could be.  If KLM, Jernigan,  and Urban could stay healthy,  it is untold what we are capable of.

If the hype around Urban is real,  increased healthy reps for KLM, and a healthy Jernigan playing with Brandon Williams in the middle would be an unnatural force.

Add to that Carl Davis who could become a monster in a rigorous conditioning program that has become a hallmark of the Harbaugh era, he may be much better year two.

Put that together and this d line could rival some of the greats of history.  I love our d line as is,  but the potential of what could be is enormously exciting.

I really think Suggs almost retired during this off season (complete speculation) we may have just seen the last of him.

I don't know how much of a role suggs had in communications. That's D Smith and W Hills most important role. Where we will miss suggs most is his ability to come up with a key stop or Qb hit at the most critical moments and biggest games.

Davis and the entire interior Dline play was awesome. Even without Suggs I still expect this defense to carry this team and hold just about any offense we can potentially face in check. As long as the Smiths and Hill stay on the field.

its a shame we didn't pick up aldon smith who can set the edge as well as rush.

Hindsight is 20/20 but I think JabaalSheard would have been the best offseason pickup. Right price. Right reliable player. Can't believe the Pats got him.
