[News] Joe Flacco: Offense Has 'A Lot To Work On'

76 posts in this topic

You just started it, congratulations.

But I wanted to start the Michael Vick trade demands tho... AND we should sign CJ2K because speed and leadurship. Is Jake Long still alive btw?

I know they don't want to risk injury but they seemed like they were really badly out of sync  on offense, they should have played more as a unit in the preseason!!!! Isn't that what the preseason is for? I mean who cares about evaluating players who won't even make the team, this is about winning regular season games!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RavensFootballFan - FYI Jacoby was injured yesterday and looks like he will be out awhile. So looks like a good move by the OZ on that one. On Monroe, i dont get that guy, never hurt in JAX and when he gets here nothing but injuries and sub par play.

Has Trestman tinkered with the run blocking scheme? Sure seems like a downgrade from last year's performance!   <_<

Happy to see that we did get untracked as time went on! Plus, I'm a heck of a lot more comfortable in our young TEs after yesterday's game! The O-Line couldn't handle Denver's speed but they're not the everyday 'Front Sevens' we'll face! I'm encouraged we'll get it together!   :oldwiseman:

Hat's off to former Raven Tyrod Taylor for his first win as starting NFL QB! Some said he'd never start!   :bricks:   Wish him much success, going forward!

Nobody is stopping you from your Micheal Vick trade demands. CJ2K signed with Cardinals this year. Long is out of a job coming off of back-to-back seasons with torn ACLs. Maybe you can help improve the Jaguars, good luck buddy.

Joe's comments about spreading them out and getting their defense out of rhythm so they can't just pin their ears back was exactly what I was thinking. Before the 2 min drill, we ran on 11 of 16 1st downs. On those 5 1st down passing attempts, Flacco was 5/5, and 4 of those completions led to another 1st down. When we ran it, we only ended up with a 1st down 3 of 11 times. Running up the middle and getting stuffed on 1st downs puts us in obvious passing situations and makes us too predictable, so the defense can "pin their ears back" on 2nd and 3rd and long. When we passed on 1st down, we had an 80% success rate of converting another 1st down, but instead of doing what worked, we ran on almost every 1st down, making it much easier for their defense to tee off on us. It was like Cam Cameron was calling plays again.

I think the offense can get it together. Monroe could make a big difference if he comes back, Hurst really seemed to be responsible for most of the pressure from Ware. Buck Allen looked a lot better than he did during the preseason and Gillmore was tough to get down on a couple catches he had. I'm not too worried at this point.

I did not know that happened. At least Jones returned for more yards on one run than the Ravens had for an entire game (Not including a bouncing kick return by Boyle). Who knows if Jones would be injured had he still been with the Ravens. I really do not see any returners yet on Ravens who scares teams like Jones can. As for Monroe, any player playing injured will play below their normal par. Apparently the Ravens thinks an injured Monroe last year was better than the next man up.

If the Ravens look bad or mediocre against the Raiders with a backup QB you better start worrying. Did I say Back up QB? Oooo" NO.

Anybody know if the "we should have kept Tyrod and traded Joe" comments have started yet?

No ,but if Joe could have run like Tyrod we would have won that game.

How was that not pass interference when the defender just runs square into Crockett without even turning his head around? I guess because it got intercepted by a third player, but it should have been called a pass interference.

So the Ravens waited until Torrey's contract was up and brought in a speed merchant whose future will have to generate returns because without him the Ravens apparently have no backup plan. Listened coincidentally to the same story line being discussed by Doc on 980 only about the loss of Jackson yesterday. Another sports announcer suggested Pierre Garcon can "run like the wind".Why didn't they try him? No rebuttals were in order. Anyway to not even try SSS or anyone else beyond 25 yards while your franchise QB is under siege makes no sense. Beating up on the lower tier teams last year is not available this year. It occurs to me that the problem lies not with their stars (literally the players) but with the coaches including everyone.

Guess you never seen Tyrod run.

I don't care to watch QBs run. I care to watch QBs throw, since that's what they are required to do in order to keep a job these days.

QBs who can run are a dime a dozen in the NFL these days. There's five that are taken in every single draft.

Now that i've had time to watch the game again, i can delve deeper into what killed them yesterday.

- The o-line was bad even with monroe. They were unprepared for the speed of the broncos. The only guy on the line that looked even remotely competent was yanda. He did a fine job. The rest of the guys were bad.

I'd like to delve deeper into james hurst's performance. He hasn't improved at all since last season. The ravens need a backup left tackle and need one badly. If you guys go back and watch the ravens' final drive, you'll see that hurst cost the ravens 2 TD shots. Firstly, he let ware get around the edge quickly which affected flacco's throw to steve smith in the right corner of the endzone. If flacco has time, he throws that cleanly and steve gets the go ahead td. Instead, ware got a hand on flacco, leading to a duck being thrown. Secondly, ware destroyed hurst on an inside rush which hurried flacco's throw to the left corner. If flacco had 1 more second, he throws a dart over roby right to steve. Instead, he was hurried and threw an off kilter pass which ended up being tipped by roby. Steve still had a shot to catch the ball but the tip  affected his timing. Hurst is bad. It looks to me like the ravens will be drafting a LT next yr for sure.

- Flacco had instant pressure in his face for the majority of the game. However, there were some dropbacks where he had some time to complete a pass. The problem was the broncos were playing press on all of the wr's. Steve was being defended by an all pro which affected his performance. The rest of the guys couldn't get any separation... This team needs speed on the outside to loosen up coverage, period. I have no idea how good perriman is but i do know one thing... he has speed. The ravens' offense is NOTHING without a stretch the field guy on the outside.

- The running game was horrible for 2 reasons. Firstly, the broncos loaded the box. Secondly, trestman kept running on first down... like, jeez. The broncos knew when the run play was coming. Predictability is this offense's worst enemy. They should've thrown on first down more.

- I'm not completely down on this offense. I saw some good things. The back-shoulder fade to marlon brown on the sideline was nice. Despite being pressured, flacco was still focused & looking downfield (minus the int to talib where he threw it off of anticipation). Maxx williams showed me some things in the passing game. This offense will get better as the games continue. The only caveat is they need perriman back & flacco/trestman need to get on the same page. Again, i'm not saying perriman is amazing but his ability to stretch the field takes a guy out of the box, stops teams from constantly blitzing & allows for our possession wr's to play w/o a bunch of press coverage all the time. At this point, no secondary respects our weapons deep. Even if perriman's just a decoy, he's needed. Badly.

The ravens played off coverage in the first half because they respected the speed of thomas & sanders. That changed in the 2nd half because they realized manning couldn't throw past 15 yards. The broncos started and finished w/ press man & sprinkled in zone on 3rd down so they could jump the hot reads. The targets dictate what coverage you're going to see... perriman changes coverage bc he's fast and strong off the line (this is one positive he showed consistently in college) & is very fast from a straight line perspective. Pressing him is asking for trouble. This is what torrey smith wasn't good w/. torrey was fast but could be pressed at the line w/ no repercussions bc of his lack of lower body strength. Perriman doesn't have that problem. That's why they need him... he's a press man coverage buster & can take the top off of the defense. Even if he isn't targeted, opposing defenses would respect that.

Well, that was long-winded.

GO RAVENS!  :banana1:

Biggest thing is our O-line has to play better for both the run and the pass. Didn't open enough holes for running lanes and our pass protection was awful. Lets get Breshad back and light up the Raiders. GO RAVENS.

Then you liked Joe getting sacked! Joe tried to do what you saying and his stats ranked him right above Ryan Mallet this week.28th

Yup, I did. Not really worth pretending like Taylor would have run for yardage yesterday either against that defense, because he wouldn't have. Gameplan would have changed dramatically if Taylor was the QB, and you'd literally see about 9 guys in the box instead of the 6-7 that Joe saw.

We've all seen how this ends before, and it doesn't end well. QBs that prefer to run over pass never make it in the long run in this league, and pointing out a 1 week instance where they appeared to be better is laughable. No realistic person thinks Tyrod leads this team down the field to the goal line in the 2 minute drill either, which he will be required to do at some point.

Even the "mobile" QBs who can throw better than Tyrod struggle with this concept sometimes. Russell Wilson, the ultimate scrambler and mobile QB in the league, got sacked SIX times yesterday.

Don't worry... there are games coming this season and in the future where a guy like Tyrod is going to be required to stand in the pocket and throw his way to a victory. My guess is on multiple occasions he will fail to do so, and then I'll be there to point them out just like others point out the times where they think a mobile QB will do better.

Our tackles need to step up! Hurst got beat all day and he did have to step in, but Wagner was not much better. We need to look for some tackle help....those guys had trouble big time

Honestly, Sr and Crokett are correct. They should have come down with the ball! big time players make big time plays! either one of them come down with that ball and the stats are in the Ravens favor. its not always easy to say one play makes the difference but in that game, one play wins that game!

They arent exactly preparing against great pass rushers during the week of practice. This performance isn't nothing new against Wade Philips. They've seen it before and never do a thing differently to prepare for the outside pressure. You will never see a team like NE let their franchise take a beating like that for 4 quarters. With 2 blocking TE's on the roster they should have used them more effectively to protect their only hope what so ever to compete in this league.

Once again the build up to expecting something different from our Offense was just a bunch of hooey! It was the most inept offense to ever play the game yesterday. Pretty embarrassing and I have to suck it up today. Really who plays like that? Yeah the preseason was meaning less but now we are embarrassing ourselves for real and it counts. It was bad enough getting killed all preseason but to lay an egg on opening day is down right pathetic and I am still pissed. Is it Baltimore? Brian Billick was supposed to be an offensive genius and he comes to Baltimore and the Offense never did anything. Trent Dilfer is one the worst quarterback to the win the Super Bowl in the history of the game. Defense won that championship outright and goes down as one of the best in history. At least we had Jamal and speed. What do we have? Our slogan after yesterday's game should be Not Ready for Prime Time Players.
