Trestman's Offense: Good, Bad, or Otherwise?

234 posts in this topic

My thoughts exactly. We may never have an elite offense.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't think we'll ever have an elite offense with Flacco.

I don't dislike him, but I just think he's a slightly above avg QB.

Not convinced the FO wants the team designed to have an elite offense anyway.

Generally speaking, if you want an elite offense, eventually you gotta pay big money to get it.

At the time, the FO did just that with Flacco's deal.

Sure, but that's sort of the minimum then and now. Elite offenses tend to pay high tier money eventually to Olineman, WRs, possibly RBs, etc.

Honestly, I'm starting to warm up to Trestman.

We just won a division game on the road without our starting QB,RB,WR,TE,LT,LG,and C.

That doesn't happen without a good coach.

I disagree completely. Flacco is MUCH better than average.

Also, so what if we don't have an "elite" offense? I'd rather have an elite team and win some more Super Bowls..which we will.

Just get Flacco a decent QB coach to fix his habits.

Last year he didn't have these issues of throwing of his back feet. Do we have the same QB coach as last year?

We may not need to have one. I'd love to have one, but as long as we're a elite team, I'm fine.

If Flacco had the Bengals' weapons, watch him do work. January Joe would make his debut in the regular season.

This sums it up.  In 12' we didn't have an elite offense but a very well balanced team.  Give Joe the right weapons and he can really turn it up.   Sadly...we neglect that aspect

Nope. Dennison was the QB coach last year but he followed Kubiak to Denver and is their OC now.

Heck even last season was good enough (minus a couple of games). Two solid WRs (SSS, Torrey), two serviceable WRs (Aiken, Brown), two decent TEs (Daniels, Gilmore), great running game and very good offensive line. I think we had a top 10 scoring offense as well with a top 10 scoring defense.

Actually he did. Those problems was quite evident in  last  year games against The Texans and Titans. I believe there was more games as well but Flacco also had better receivers last year.

I've been fine with Trestman the whole time and part of it is the reasons above.  Yes he calls some plays that everyone can see coming, but his offense has hovered around the top half of the league (was even top 10 a few weeks recently) and he's been working with Hurst at LT and more undrafted WRs than I've ever seen a team

Consider this.  So far this season, only 1 WR that's played a snap for the Ravens was drafted before the 4th round, and that WR was a 3rd round pick.  Including Terrance West, only 1 RB was drafted before the 4th round, and that RB was West himself in the 3rd and we've only had him 1 game.  And we walked into the season with a second year TE with 1 start under his belt and two rookies.  And again, James Hurst has played probably as many snaps at LT as Monroe.

Most people have given Flacco, and now Schaub, a pass for all this for the WRs/TEs/O-line so I'm not sure why Trestman barely gets a pass for having an offense with a total of 2 and a half starters drafted in the first or second round (Monroe being the half).  This may be the worst pedigree offense in league history in addition to the worst WR corp ever seen.  Trestman has been very good if we look at it objectively.

Trestman is pretty good. Him straying from the run almost killed us last week, but that's not all him. Too many holding penalties down the stretch, I remember it killing a 7-8 yard run and giving the team 2nd and 12. Those kind of things are drive killers.

And heads up, Hurst has been looking serviceable as of late. Could be our future LT with Monroe really struggling to stay on the field lol. Prepare yourselves

I didn't want to be the first to say it because I didn't want to deal with any trolls, but Hurst has looked ten times better lately. He still has to work on his run blocking, especially when he's on the play side, but he's been good. He's actually been pretty good at run blocking on the backside. His pass blocking is getting there too.

Maybe that Castillo guy knows what he's doing :P

I'd just like to see his offense working with all its pieces in place before I make a judgement. I haven't loved his play-calling, but I don't think the system is a lost cause just because it wasn't able to turn acid rain into Dom Perignon.

Castillo was never the problem. The oline isn't as good as last years, but quite frankly. They're not too bad. Hurst I give a lot of crap, but he has improved. I do want another backup however.

Trestman and such are not the issue. You have literally lost all of your starters(or they have suffered some injuries at some point) this season. No one. I repeat. NO ONE can overcome that.

Sure he abandons the run sometimes. I'll say that's his worst quality(it's a bad one sure), but he has been improving each game this season.

The defense is the problem. It's clear to most

I hope he stays.

I'm not blaming the run game issues on Trestman. What allowed Kubiak to stay true to the run game was the offense's ability to stay on schedule last season. Our offense is doing anything but staying on schedule this season.

Trestman called a great game. He initially tried to use Matt like Joe and it didn't work. He passed way too much and later he switched to using the run to establish the pass, and it worked great. It was so successful because the Browns aren't great at run defense and the RB had nice lanes. You gotta give Trestman credit for using the run more, though. He adjusted

i hated trestman at first, but you have to remember he was trying to call someone elses system with a roster that he was unfamiliar with. he has adapted, you can tell hes beginning to finally get a feel for what he needs to call, and he is now tailoring his scheme to better fit his players, which is something we have never seen in a ravens offense, i cant wait to see what it looks like with at least 8 out of 11 starters which shouldnt be unreasonable to ask for...

my biggest concern is will we finally abandon the failure that is the inside zone scheme? i just dont see success from it, the stretch works great, especially when you have a few weak links in the line, it allows you to mask that deficiency as long as you have a solid overall unit. if we can finally commit 100% to the stretch zone, and allow trestman to call his real playbook but with a heavier dosage of run game, i think this offense could take off. if joe reinvents his mechanics after returning from this surgery, and we come back next year with a healthy lineup, then im expecting production like weve never seen in baltimore, and i dont think thats a bold prediction either.
