Trestman's Offense: Good, Bad, or Otherwise?

234 posts in this topic

He did a much better job today against a stingy Bengals defense. Don't get me wrong, he didn't have a blast but hes inproving every week.

I loved the adjustments made today. Trestman schemes better for our #1 reciever than anyone before him. He gets better every week. And he's very aggressive. Flacco will break 4000 with trestman

hmm what about our awesome running game we had last year? It's non existent now

Trestman is severely hampered by personnel, I'll say that much.

Please get Aiken and Brown out of there, both useless.

The line sucks. Hurst especially is killing the left side.

Marc is getting better. He has trash  compared to our other coordinater, he's right where I thought he would be, not awful not great. WE really need some more vertical therats/good line play, then we'll be able to full evaluate.

We had the same line last year. Hurst even filled in last year and Forsett was fine.

I think we've faced 1 truly great defense in Denver, Bengals have a good d, and Oakland is mediocre especially with the safeties out.

To some extent this is true. Today more than other games this year I was left scratching my head about Joe's decisions as he'd throw the ball to someone (usually Smith) in tighter coverage than finding his 2nd or 3rd read to Marlon or Kamar. However, it makes me think that it is a product of Joe's lack of confidence in their talent/inablity to execute.

It's hard to develop chemistry and trust if you aren't giving guys an opportunity to make plays. Marlon Brown had an inexcusable drop, but came up huge on a long 3rd down and was open a few other times. I haven't gone back and watched the game again to really break it down but i definitely think there was a bad combination of Cincy not allowing guys to get open down field and Joe being too quick to rely on the dump off.

Not sure where Aiken was today but I'll go back and see if he was getting open or not. I'm not saying the WRs are great or even have the potential to be great, but until you give them in game chances you'll never know. Steve Smith will not last catching 10 passes per game.

Trestman does a great job of scheming the offense to create favorable matchups for guys. They just have to win and Flacco has to trust them and the oline to stand in the pocket and deliver an accurate ball. Trestman needs the 2010 Flacco back who stood in the pocket and delivered darts to his WRs because they didn't create great space. I think having Torrey's speed and guys who can make great contested catches like Boldin, Smith and Pitta has really spoiled Joe. He didn't have to be perfect with those guys but with this WR corp he's gotta develop that trust and give these guys favorable opportunities.

Maybe it's time for Trestman to be Trestman, and not Kubiak II. I want more Flacco in the shotgun...

Cant believe I saw Flacco with an empty backfield. Don't think I've ever seen that before.

and it worked

I've been saying this. Let Trestman call what he wants to call.

Harbaugh is probably mandating that, that not happen. He insists we are running team when our highest paid offensive player is a SB MVP.

the good thing is that he still runs it and makes you respect it. He doesn't abandon the run.

I have to agree. One foot and one foot out is bad. Lets just go full Trestman.

Im finally seeing some things that aren't cookie cutter. While the playcalling in situations has been questionable. I like the plays themselves.

I'm still shocked that we Saw Joe Flacco in a empty backfield and Joe struggles at reading a defense so letting him see it prior to the snap has to be beneficial.

The Ravens have to fully commit to Trestman imo. Kubiak's offense is successful for "him" because he is comfortable in it and generally knows how to work through the flaws in it. Allow Trestman to run what he's most comfortable with and move out of his way. I think this is slowly but surely happening. If you go back and watch each game this year, the offense looks completely different from game 1 to game 3. Game one was a Kubiak influenced gameplan. The last 2 games has been more of what Trestman wants to do. Screens and short passes acting as extensions of the run game and combination routes creating space in the back end. Obviously having a guy with Perriman's speed and a true downhill runner like Taliaferro with help open up the offense even more.

Harbaugh is probably mandating that, that not happen. He insists we are running team when our highest paid offensive player is a SB MVP.

I honestly don't think it's Harbs. I think Harbs is another guy that spews the company policy. The Ravens Way is deep rooted in this organization and for good reason, but it needs to change with the times a bit. If you go back and look at the style of the offense under Harbs, the Ravens have tried to make this a Joe Flacco led offense but met a ton of resistance each time. They tried in 2011 under Cam. However much like this year the Ravens were dealing with a lot of new parts. Whenever Flacco would pass a lot and the RBs got few touches in a win, everyone was happy. The moment the offense didn't perform well in a loss everyone, mainly the defensive players, would be crying about how you gotta play Ravens football and establish the run game. They tried again in 2013 under Caldwell, but with a terrible oline and new players it wasn't much success there and again everyone questioned the Ravens for moving away from their "identity". I honestly believe that if Kubiak didn't become available that Kyle Shanahan would have been the OC and he's very QB friendly. However when Kubiak came available he was a no brainer and he brought a run first type of offense and it had a ton of success.

You always hear guys on that Ravens defense talking about how the offense needs to run the ball and control the clock. Even Canty earlier this year spoke about how he hopes the offense doesn't chnage much and Trestman continues to run the ball. The Ravens have been a defensively driven team for a long time, but now those heavy voices like Ray, Ed and Suggs aren't around to carry that heavy influence on this organization and allowing the offense to run through Flacco 100% of the time won't be met with a ton of resistance imo.

Still kind of hard to judge if you ask me. It's great to see Flacco throwing for more yardage than normal. And in the last two games the offense has looked fine overall (barring the first half of today). But the first game was still a disaster, and it's still pretty early on.

We really should've cleared some cap and made the trade for Brandon Marshall. Hell I was advocating we moved ngata for him. That would've helped us out tremendously. Smith and Marshall we wouldn't have lost Any of these three games IMO.

It's somewhat difficult to assess Trestman fairly until the OL is fixed. The problem seems to be a near duplicate the 2013 OL problems. Forsett, 10 carries for 13 yards (a 1.3 average). Could this be a record low?

With all the bad things happened to the Ravens, especially from the defenses, I'm glad we have Trestman who will develop who Joe really is; a master of Shotgun......

Flacco is super bowl mvp but  i don't think he's a guy that should be throwing the ball a whole lot. He needs a good running game to get started and it was highly needed on sunday because a good running game keeps the clock moving.

If you guys watching Denver vs Detroit game, Stafford had so many chances to win the game but didn't cuz Denver defense was so good and their pass rush and QB pressure were phenomenal.  If our defense can make 1 or 2 crucial stop, we should be 2-1 right now.........instead of 0-3.

I hope Trestman would stay here for long cuz we are evolving in some real offense like Greenbay and NE sort of thing...

We need a leader in defense if we want to turn things around......

I agree with everyone who is being rational about Trestman. I was excited when he got here because he really knows how to design good passing plays. I also knew he would get away from the running game, but overall I thought, and still think, he will be a good OC.

I think that with even an average #2 receiver we could have a pretty good offense. As it stands now, our only real playmakers on offense are SS89 and maybe Crockett Gillmore. No one else gets separation reliably. Also consider that we are limited by a lack of speed to stretch defenses and limited by our backup LT, who gives Joe less time to throw, and I'm willing to give Trestman some slack.

I actually feel like we have a good chance to score quickly at the end of games with Trestman, which is not how I felt under Cam or Caldwell.

The only negative i have with the offense is the oline. Kubiak's offense did a great job of hiding the shortcomings of the oline because even a lot of his passes had run action from the oline and it kept defenses off balance in terms rushing the passer. Trestman puts more responsibility on his oline and backs. Those guys can't hide up front now and it's really showing with Hurst, Zuttah and surprisingly KO. Those guys have to be better up front. They'll get more comfortable as the season goes imo. Thought the pass pro was pretty good at times.

I personally feel that Forsett was a product of Kubiak's system and will not be as good as either Taliaferro or Buck in Trestman's offense. No knock to Justin buts he's a guy that will get what's blocked for him and not much more. In the Broncos game and the Bengals game he had opportunities to hit holes hard and didn't or just missed holes completely. It doesn't seem like much on the surface but when you're picking 3 yards instead of 5 or 6 it really starts to show up when your offense has to fight for every yard like the Bengals and Broncos made them do. Taliaferro seems so much more explosive in the run game and wouldn't be surprised to see him get a lot of carries once healthy.

I think Trestman is doing some great things in the passing game and believe it'll only get better. I don't think the weapons are as poor as people think. Right now Trestman is still learning these guys and getting comfortable with them. Smitty is the only proven guy and Trestman is doing a great job of scheming him open and getting him involved early. Those short crosses and quick flares/screens will eventually start to go to guys like Camp and Perriman. Those 2nd window sqaure in routes and deep crosses off of play action are scheme routes, those aren't plays that Smitty is winning 1on1. That's mostly Trestman getting him open and Smitty finishing the play with a catch. Now i'm not knocking Smitty because he's balling, but the offense isn't asking him to win a ton of 1on1s with route running. Can guys like Brown and Williams start making more plays once they start getting schemed open? I think they can but until it happens we won't know.

Despite the lack of playmakers, the Ravens' offense is scoring a fairly high number of points and getting plenty of yards. So, I think Trestman is doing well so far.

While i agree with mostly what you said: If this is mainly Trestman scheming for SSS, does Trestman just decide not to schem for the other WRs.  Or do they lack the skills to run a designed route?  If its the ladder, then we really need to question (most have) the abiltity to judge WRs considering these guys arent rookies.

Well, is his offense really bad? I don't think he's the problem. Did I see bad calls? Oh yeah. Kubiak made some bad calls, too. Trestman has a WR corps that was overrated combined with an OL that forgot how to play and a complete abandon of discipline.

He's used Juszczyk more than Kubiak ever did.

Trestman's playcalling is questionable at times and he isn't doing the O-line too many favors BUT we're scoring points and moving the ball.

The biggest thing holding back the offense is the poor running game. We're near the bottom of the league in yards/attempt.

Flacco talked about it at his press conference, the Bengals were playing a conservative 2-deep coverage all game. The way to get a defense out of that look is to be effective running the ball - a safety will come down and it will open up play-action and/or some long passes.

We couldn't do that. The running game was basically '3 yards and a pile of dust' and got stuffed on a couple third down tries. That's why we saw the spread formations with Forsett and Juice, simple short passes in lieu of a running game.

I don't particuarly care for those plays but it's necessary with an ineffective ground game.

I can't remember. Has Trestman ever had a first quarter lead to play with this season? I think we've been playing from behind for each of our games so far. Our defense isn't doing our offense any favors.

Our offense certainly isn't doing itself any favors with all the dropped passes and bad routes. The left side of the offensive line is abysmal. Hopefully Monroe can stabilize that, but who knows? My biggest concern is receiver. Has Kamar done anything? Has Marlon done anything? If you ask me it's time to shake things up. Time to move Kamar down the depth chart to start Marlon and move Campanero to number 3. Kamar is holding us back.
