[News] Steve Smith Sr. Puts Loss On Himself

75 posts in this topic

Been on the Bengals board. They are delirious with glee being the only winning team this week from the north. I posted a response regarding their next 6 games: Chargers, at Ravens, Chiefs, Seahawks, at Bills, at Steelers. OUCH!

First game of the year in Denver against a pretty stout defense and we still almost walked out with a win. That loss isn't on Steve's one play, but on a lack of execution on several plays. I'm unhappy with how mediocre our offense looked, but it will get better. We can't expect to be firing on all cylinders in Week 1 and the limited practice time the offseason provides. I hope Trestman can look at what worked and what didn't and adjust accordingly. We can't go into every week so complaisant on offense, but we will get better.

I wonder what Trestman record is after a loss. The real challange will be how he corrects/adjusts this offense because the Raiders are not too happy right now.

Why are fans so quick to blame? it was marc Trestman's first game. You not remember week one last year against the steelers? Our offense really didnt play all that great that game either compared to the rest of the year. The only difference in both those games was flacco was about to convert 2TDs and not throw a pick six. I also remember when everyone flipped out last year because the debacle in Houston when their defense ran us through the mud.

Flacco doesnt throw that pick six, ravens walk out of mile high victorious. SmithSR catches that pass that hit him in the hands and face in the endzone, we walk out of mile high victorious. Gilmore able to hold onto the ball at the last second instead of having it taken away. We walk out of mile high victorious. It was overall a team loss. We went into the game strong but left to many plays on the field that could have changed that outcome of the game outside of the play calling.

I think if we can take anything from this game it was our defense shows promise. If Pee's does more man and sends the house, and allow our corners to do what they do best I think their wont be many issues or losses we will end up stacking. HOWEVER if Suggs injury causes Pee's to play it safe on the defense our season is gone. History shows he is known for doing that if he loses a key piece he will play it safe in the play calling. Also our QB outside of that pick six shows he really has gotten better with age. And our RBs are not a huge issue as we thought with the injury.

I dont think out loss on Defense will hurt us as much as people think with Suggs going down. Yes its a blow to our leadership, but I honestly dont see it being as big as people are saying. We are trying to be a run heavy team/balanced with run first. Which is fine, I think we are in luck with Buck Allen as RB I say it now, if you can tell by anyones first game in as a rookie, backing up forsette i think he has a strong future ahead of him.

Our offense will start ticken, when IDK but they have the potential to be something. You just have to understand our WR core is a bunch of unproven talent outside of SmithSR. And we really do not have speed with Perriman sidelined. Also our tightends are young, outside of Gilmore they have zero NFL experience up until today. Their were a couple of plays where Gilmore and Williams got open but the pass rush was to much for our offensive line.

Overall stop playing the blame game week 1 this was a team loss not one single person was the cause

I don't understand why Steve Smith gets all these free passes around here. Actually, I do. He's the only decent receiver on the team with a bunch of nobody's behind him. The man was tied for the most drops last year but everyone conveniently forgets that. And he hasn't started out this year too hot, either. Look, I like the guy, and I love his attitude. But when other receivers drop similar passes everyone wants heads to roll. The hypocrisy hurts my brain.

That being said, Trestman bears much (most) of the blame for this one. The lineman can only do what they can do. It's up to the OC to make adjustments. He failed. Not a happy camper about this one. The defense played lights-out, and yet again the offense loses the game for us.

senior should have caught it... yes. gilmore should have caught it...yes. my question is, where was the answer to the denver's defence? it seemed the ravens o played cautious. played scared. the ravens stuck to a script that proved to suck. where were the quick outs? where were the screens? no, the ravens tried to jam the ball up a collapsing middle. don't give me the pressure on flacco bull. the slow development of the play was what got the ravens killed. it wasn't until late in the third when they seem to pick tempo up to counter the denver's pass rush.

Steve Smith was absolutely useless in this game. We threw to him several times, and he got a grand total of 2 passes for 13 yards. Aiken, our other "starter", had 1 catch for -1 yard. Marlon Brown, meanwhile, had 2 catches for 25 yds, and Gilmore had 2 catches for 23 yds., and of course because Marc Tressman, it was screen pass city, with 4 catches by Forsett and "Juice" each, both for less than 20 yds. total. That is seriously the most aenemic I remember seeing our offense in a long time, and it was certainly one of the worst games, statistically, of Flacco's career.

I'd also like to comment, that many people here seem totally fine (last year even, as well), considering Steve Smith a "number 1 WR", yet for the six years we had Derrick Mason, who I might add to this day is still the best overall WR we've ever had, many of these same fans stated that we "didn't have a number 1 WR". The hell we didn't. I like Smith Sr. alright, but I'd take Mason over Smith any day, and he certainly was a "Number 1". Regardless, We really need to develop our young guys more, we need to use Brown more, and use Camp more, and stop throwing to Steve Smith Sr. so often.

The secodary was outstanding. Sure they got help up front but every secondary does. But why did they wait until the second half to adjust? Why weren't they playing up close on the line against Broncos receivers to begin with? Is this some sort of coaching chess match? The coaches have the brunt of the blame because the team looked good for the most part. From a fans perspective I thought a lot of the blame was on Joe. Listening to the post game wrap up the announcer gave me the impression that the last play of the third quarter which Talib ran back for a pick six was on Joe. It's not the first time Joe has done this but he's not alone. Jimmy's interception was because Jimmy was spot on.But Joe's was a hasty judgement. Just sayin' it all isn't on Steve. Though Gronk would have had that one and perhaps the one Crockett couldn't handle. Overall the team looked better than expected and they will improve.

This looks like the Texans game last year. Also just like in the playoff game with NE they screwed us on the TV timeout. They didn't take one after Denver scored off the interception and before they kicked off. That was done intentionally to keep us off balance. Kraft and the Patriots keep an enemies list and he controls the TV contracts, this has been a thing with us for a long time it used to be just not showing replays in a timely manner so we couldn't make good challenges. The new thing is either destroying Momentum by TV timeouts or power outage al la the superbowl OR keeping opposing momentum by not giving us the standard momentum by taking the standard TV timeout after a score. There are no rules against it so whoever controls the networks will have a crazy good advantage of they choose to take it and we all know the Patriots will do anything if it doesn't say that you can't do it in writing.

Yes Trestman needed to adapt quicker, but I'm taking this game as our one flier this year. Gary knows Gary andtTrestman trying to be Gary was not going to work well since their D practices vs him every day, just like the Texans last year. Plus no Torrey /Perriman. The next game will be a better test of what we can do without Perriman since they don't use Gary's system. Perriman should be back around week three and in sync by week five. I would suggest not freaking out after this game. Yes we lost, let's wait at least a week before before jumping.

I'm a big SSS fan so I don't like saying this, but I agree with him that he should have caught that pass. I, also, agree that it would have been a pretty good catch, because although the defender didn't quite get high enough to tip the ball he definitely appeared to get his hand high enough to obscure Steve's vision of the ball for an instant. So, it would have required great concentration, but like Steve said, he's a #1 receiver and you expect #1 receivers to make those catches. But this one play, although it would have won the game, was not the Real reason we lost. We lost because Denver's front devastated our OL throughout the entire game, allowing Only the one late drive that should have resulted in SSS's game winning catch. Our OL, supposedly one of our strengths, got manhandled and had Joe under pressure and getting hit all day long, and didn't do much at all for our running game. It was so bad in pass protection that I actually think I saw "Joe Cool" a bit rattled. He doesn't show hardly Any negative emotions so it's hard to tell, but I do think he was a bit rattled. So, if that's the case, you know it had to be bad. Losing Suggs is horrendous. I don't know if he'd have been any better but losing Monroe to the concussion didn't help because Hurst, his replacement, was particularly weak, Consistently being beat by Demarcus Ware. I wonder what we'll do about losing Suggs. Watch for a move on the roster. We have to do better next week because we just can't start out 0-2.

Agreed minus the part about the young guys. The young guys people on these boards always overhype are JAGs. The fact is there are no offensive playmakers to be found anywhere on this team.

Joe takes too many, "Leaps of faith" for an Elite QB!

I'd like to see Joe actually hit a WR in stride and stop throwing the ball to a guy that's double covered. He still throws the ball where he intended at the snap, regardless of if his guy is covered. If he IS covered, you have to pinpoint pass it to your guy, not lob it up and hope for the best.

Flacco holds on to the ball too long. Manning gets rid of it in half the time, I noticed. Even though, I'll also point out, Manning got sacked as much or more, I think, than Flacco, which is very uncharacteristic of Peyton. 2 INT's will lose most of the time, anyways, so it was partly Joe's undoing, as well as Steve Smith. He's right, that he's the No. 1 receiver, so he should make No. 1 type plays. I'm glad he put that one on himself; he's better than that, I know. He'll make his share of No. 1 receiver-type plays this year, I bet.

Have you ever considered that Joe has to hold the ball a bit longer because his receivers have so much difficulty getting separation? In the first half, Pees had our CBs giving cushions to Denver's receivers so their were open quicker, thus, Manning gets to throw the ball sooner. Our receivers have struggled to gain seperation for a while now, other than Campanaro and he doesn't get on the field too often. I guess Joe could throw the ball away more to get rid of it quicker, but he's Trying to complete some passes.

Why is SSS the only receiver that can produce? What's the problem?

SSS did Not produce yesterday. Have you seen his stats, let alone the game winning catch that hit his hands, face, then dropped to the ground? The problem is that our other receivers have never shown the ability to gain separation consistently, with the exception of Campanaro, and he doesn't get on the field too often. The other part of the problem, at least yesterday, was that the OL gave Joe NO pass protection. He was under pressure and being hit All day. I think that's the problem.

Keep Joe in the pistol and move the pocket! Peyton was under pressure but still got his passes off when so to say Joe needs more blocking is not good enough for me anymore maybe Joe needs to be benched for a game three INTs the last two games and they all said he should have just thrown it away! Red me up I like Joe but can't keep blaming everyone but him! Torrey got released because of a pass that should not been thrown to him!

I know it was on the ofense, but my man flacco kinda sucked...on that pick six and on that jump ball...c mon man throw a dart over there no a slow ball were the safetys can recover their time and take the ball from gilmore....gilmore was in front of him in the beginning of the play.

I think you all need to relax. Look at the score and compare it to last year. This was defensive game all the way through. We lost by 6 and not by a bunch of TD's. Flacco played well to have NO PROTECTION in the pocket. As soon as Monroe went down, Von Miller was eating our backup alive. Horrible to watch but Flacco played with confidence all the way through. The first INT was his fault, the second one was in Gilmores hands but snatched away. That's just good defense. The pass to Smith for a potential game winning TD was IN SMITH'S HANDS! He dropped the pass. Give Flacco a little credit. He didn't force a lot, turned the ball over once that was his fault. Got out the pocket and threw the ball away when needed. Both offenses had some issues with the defense. SMH jeesh did you guys even watch the game? I'm hearing all kinds of crap about Flacco. Stop watching just one man play and look at the team as a unit. For Joe to perform and recievers needs to get open which they barley did. Running back need to get yards which they barley did because of the line. He needs time to throw when he didn't have all game because of the line. It's not a one man show. SMH

The reason why Flacco held the ball for so long is because our recievers was not getting open all game. The packages Marc was running wasn't effective and our RB's was not putting the def on their heels. Wasn't much Flacco could do. Flacco played smart. That one INT was his fault. The second one was not. Flacco played pretty darn well for the way the game went. Receivers not getting open, no run game, line not giving him protection will cause your team to lose everytime.

It's no way Flacco could have played that any better. He gave Crockett a chance which he almost made the play but it was ripped out of his hands. Flacco cant make the receivers catch on top of throwing the ball. He throws a dart crockett is not catching it. He was up against like 2 or 3 denver players. Not realistic at all

This makes no sense at all. Or receivers had no separation all game. So how is he suppose to get them the pass. Flacco would have had more INT than 2 yesterday

The first part of your statement was spot on but about Joe not at all. Joe play good to not have protection, no run game and the receievers not getting open. Kamar was no where in site, smith had a ton of drops. Give the man some credit this was collective fail for this game. The line played horrible and our backup LT was getting destroyed by Von. They were in the backfield every play. What do you expect Joe to do if he doesn't have protection. Broncos was getting passes off because of how far back Dean had the DB's back which was so stupid.

Sure the O was bad, awful. But you have to say Flacco was the worst. He threw 2 picks and the last one should have been a touchdown. He under threw it.

That second INT wasn't Flacco fault!!! Are you kidding!? It was in CG's hands! No protections, run game or receivers getting seperation

I saw alot of good things but the play calling has got to get better! Should have played in three and four receiver sets because of all the build up and played no huddle football! Did too much running in my eyes but like i said we good tho!

I appreciate the honor of Smith, taking on the load and taking the heat off of the quarterback, but, this loss was not his fault. If you look at the Slo Mo replay, you will see the defender got a hand on the ball, causing it to deflect enough to make this a really difficult catch. Joe, on the other hand, played like crap. He tosses the ball directly into the arms of a defender for a TD, then he tosses up a free for all pass to his tight end, who was covered like a blanket, in the end zone. Just two stupid decisions sealed the loss. It is on him, not on Smith.

In the first half, 3rd and long, only rushing 3 against Peyton, not the best defensive call. At least they learned their lesson and brought the house in the 2nd half!
