Potential FA Pass Rushers

123 posts in this topic

Ok. Suggs is out. Let's wipe our tears and discuss who we could either pick up via free agency or a realistic trade.

Only person that comes to mind that's a FA is Jason Babin.

I dunno. Post em up guys

Stealing this from LosT_iN_TranSlatioN, but Dwight Freeny was supposedly considering signing with a team if the right opportunity presented itself. He was surprising very good as a pass rusher last season, one of the most effective on per snap basis in fact. It's not a dreamy scenario, but it's a thought.

Freeney and Babin are the guys that came to mind for me as soon as I heard the news.  Freeney was still productive last year, as was Babin although he was in a much more limited role.

If we want a guy with some pass rush ability, it's pretty much going to have to be an older guy nearing the end.  No young guys that can rush the passer out there, unless I'm missing someone.

I'd go with Freeney and maybe see if Steven Means is doing OK. I know we released him with an injury settlement, but it might be a good time to see if he's healed up after all that hype that surrounded him. He did look good in the games he played in preseason.

Here's a thought in Jacksonville Daryl Smith played some outside linebacker put him there and dare I say Arthur Brown to the inside

4-3 OLB is way different than 3-4 OLB. Daryl Smith couldn't play OLB in our system.

Freeney nor Babin aren't edge setters, so I doubt it esp. with someone like Doom (the same) on the other side but they could play passing downs, I guess.

You aren't going to be able to find a guy that can do both at this point.  I'd opt for the pass rush since that's more difficult to find.  McClellan showed today that he can bounce outside and set the edge.  It's not ideal, but there is no perfect fix at this point.  It's going to be a patch job.

The Ravens can use Albert Mccellan as  a edge setter and then have Freeney or Babin come in on passing downs along with Doom.

Go get Shaun Phillips. As a pass rushing specialist at this point in his career I think he'll be fine

I'd pass.  The Titans and Colts tried him as a pass rushing specialist last year, and he was completely ineffective.

Like others have said, Freeney seems to be a guy worth looking at.  He was still fairly effective.  We can use a combination of things to help set the edge, but we do need some additional pass rushing pressure.

Sam Acho could be of use?

Slightly interested, but no idea what's going on with his health right now.

I don't think they will look at Free Agency at all

Our new starters will likely be Upshaw and Doom with McClellan seeing more time on the outside and Z. Smith will be thrown right in there

Or we will run more 43 looks with Jernigan being healthy again

Jernigan-Davis-Williams-Canty/Doom

CJ-Daryl-Upshaw

Sounds pretty solid actually. Also we can rotate Brown Orr and McClellan in depending on the situation. And let Upshaw play some DLine aswell

This is typically the case and the most likely scenario.  But in a case like losing Suggs, I think it might be worth doing some due diligence.  Adding another veteran couldn't hurt the team.  Suggs was an emotional leader which is hard to replace with younger guys.  I'm not saying someone will step in and fill that role.  But taking a look at a veteran like Freeney who has great experience on and off the field might not be a bad option.

I get what you're saying, but we're absolutely going to have to look outside of the organization.  The only internal OLB option is Brennen Beyer, and it's clear he's an edge setter and not a pass rusher.  We're obviously going to miss both, but we already have McClellan who will likely step into that role.  The role we're missing is the pass rush aspect.  Smith may be able to step up, but we're still going to need more than him.  It might not be a Freeney or Babin, but I'm guessing there will be a new face on the team this week.

People are looking at this all wrong. we don't need another pass rushing 3-4 olb. we need another run stuffing olb. We have zadarius and Doom. Neither are really committed run stoppers. So unless you want to drain Doom you need Upshaw and add another player to play 1st and 2nd down to keep the pass rushers fresh.

McClellan can play that role quite well. The rush is going to suffer. Will have to scheme more pressure even if a guy like freeney signs. I wonder if Pierre Paul could be an option.

If he was good enough to play, the Giants want (need) him on the field.  His injury appears to be a lot worse than initially thought and hasn't been able to lift.  He's not going to be the same player minus a few figures.

Even if he is the winner of the Darwin olympics, why in god's name would the Giants trade him?

Paul hasn't signed his franchise tag yet and it's been rumors or speculation going around that The Giants don't feel comfortable with him playing this season and feel his hand is too messed up.
