Terrell Suggs Tears Achilles - Out for Year

111 posts in this topic

I think we're asking the wrong question. The real question is, is this a catastrophic loss? People are comparing it to the Jimmy Smith injury, but here's the thing. Jimmy at the time was our only good player in the secondary. In the front 7 we have Dumervil, Mosely, Smith, Jernigan, Davis(who's been a massive surprise btw), Canty, Williams, Lawerence Guy is a good rotational piece. We have talent there. Enough to compensate for part of the loss imo. I want another pass rusher sure, but maybe we won't be bad off. It's a bad loss, sure, but I don't think it'll kill us.

It can't be put into words how important Suggs is to our team. We don't have anyone to replace him.

The good news is that our Defense still played well, but it wasn't as effective after he left.

The bad news is that I'm embarrassed for many that posted in this thread.

Incredulous

I actually think most are just coping with the shock and disappointment of losing such a long-time great player. I'm with you though; I think our depth can work to mitigate the loss, but it'll mean less flexibility from our OLB and more substitutions between downs for a run-defender/pass-rusher. Za'Darius is bad at run support, but he can rush the passer on an obvious passing down.

Heres a scary question? Does Suggs come back next year.  He seems worn out.  We all know he is a warrior, but he is about to miss this whole season, it could go either way...make him hungry for next year to come back and dominate or it could just make him lose his passion....Either way, Hes an all time great and im glad hes been a Raven this long.

Steeler week won't be the same... Ugh

Hope he comes back next year and can still produce. I don't think Suggs will go out like this.

My suggestion to the coaching staff is to replace Terrell Suggs with #50 Albert McClellan.  Albert is a big, strong, quick, and fast (4.6 in 40-yard dash) player that can also rush the passer.  I have known Albert since he was a youth.  I coached him in little league and he played DE for me.  He also played DE in college.  He could also be switched to DE to rush the passer occasionally.

I hope the coaching staff gives him a chance.  He is ready for the challenge and will surprise many critics!!

Did he not get back quite quickly from his last one? They might not IR him in hope of him coming back for the playoffs

He did but the injury occurred early in the offseason before even OTAs (I think?). We also said he's done so I doubt we'd change our mind suddenly. It's sad but we'll have to find a way.

I'll hold out hope until he's officially IRd

Took him just over 5 months after surgery to recover from the last one - which is insanely fast (LINK). 5 months from now puts us in mid-February, I think he's headed for IR unfortunately but I appreciate and share your sentiment.

edit - the bright side for Suggs, all from the linked article, is that he's familiar with the rehab and has 'good genes'

As much as I like Suggs and it sucks he got hurt , he has come into camp the last two seasons out of shape .

This is a known fact . Last year he had a 1/2 sack the first 6 games and like 10 the last half of the season .

I suspect he was gonna mimic last year .

He was a complete no factor in the Broncos game .

We may have seen his last game as a Raven . I'm wondering if it was the same Achilles he tore playing basketball several

years ago . Anyone know ?

You guys know that Suggs commands attention and respect from offensive players, right? It's not like he's a scrub or a washed up veteran. I'm surprised by some comments here suggesting he's practically expendable.

Perhaps we can recover after losing Sizzle but don't minimize his impact to mitigate his loss. Lol

It might not be the passrush abilities we miss most. He's also a fine edgesetter. Wish him full luck in his recovery and I hope its not his last year.

After 12 years of good play, the big Raven is out again with the same injury. It s a shame but it looks like father time is taking him slowly. It happens to all ball players and Suggs is no different. He will be 33 I believe so it's not horrible but it is a sober thought. If he was 30 or so...I wouldn;t worry. But this could be the end of his career. If it is then he should count his blessings. 12 years a and Superbowl ring and all the great times w/ Ray and all the other Ravens! Heal up big boy and lets see how you respond. If you decide that enough is enough. I can't blame you. !

The last one was perceived as more of a calf muscle tear too as it occurred so high up on the achilles.  If this is a full on traditional achilles tear he's done for an entire calendar year, not just a football season.

http://www.bostonsportsdesk.com/breaking-news-nfl-to-investigate-patriots-role-in-suggs-acl-injury/

The Pats being investigated for the injury to Suggs.

( I am fairly certain its a joke )

I feel bad for Suggs. First he does his foot and now he's injured his knee as well.

(the joke being that the Achilles tendon is in the foot and the ACL's a knee ligament - in case anyone missed that)

Suggs is still a top 5 edge defender IMO. It's going to force us to scheme pressure. He can't just be replaced.

Yeah, losing Suggs sucks. The thing he gave us was versatility and he really helped disguise pressure since he was effective with his hand in the dirt or standing up. Losing that ability to disguise pressure and set the edge sucks.

The first tear was on his right leg. The one he tore Sunday was on his left leg.

I don't know Suggs' medical history but I recall reading that he has good genes or something and is a fast healer. Granted you could say that could be bs or even that he's older so he might not heal as fast now.

What I'll say is from what I've seen from Suggs, I think he'll be back next year for sure unless he physically can't recover. I believe he can. The Achilles tear isn't the death sentence it used to be and he already knows how to recover from it. I'm sure Dr Anderson in NC will treat him again.

What I know from the previous tear is that he healed in an insanely short period of time. Doctors said he's now the new benchmark for recovering from that type of injury.

However.... I've gotten vibes that some people are skeptical that he did it without the use of drugs to help speed the healing process. What I do know is that his body is that much older now.

There are several steps to dealing with someone in football.

1. Anger... This board pretty much bypasses it all the time because so many pessimists live here.

2. Denial. He can't be gone right?

3. Talking yourself out of it. "He's not good enough anyway"

4. Realization.

5. Acceptance

You have to include bargaining in there somewhere! "We need to trade for x player to replace y player."

That's in the subphase between one and two, desperation
