Oline Woes

99 posts in this topic

One Game vs a great defense. But I have to ask. What happened? Is it Trestman? Is it that they got cocky? Idk. Point is. We need something better badly.

Overreacting? Sure. But what I saw was not promising

The o-line just faced potentially the best pass rushing defense in the league.  They lost big the first half and were so so at best in the second.  First game and no real time to get comfortable with each other and in general.

I was disappointed by the lack of holes for the running game, but we took on a really good front seven led by Wade Philips. I'm going to give it another two or three weeks before picking whether our OL is in for a down year, the Broncos were just that good or some combination of both.

I think it was more of us facing an extremely good defense then it was on our o line . That being said we could have done much better and we are supposed to have the best protection In the league.

I'm sorry but Hurst is not an adequate back up that guy can't block a speed rush if his life depends on it, while also getting blown back by a bull rush

We need Monroe fast!

Other than that it was a Wade Phillips D so obviously tough to run against. At the beginning there were not a lot of holes but after the half we opened some. Especially for Buck

Honestly, I think it had to do with how banged up our O-line was this offseason, then you lose Monroe at the starting gates.  Those two things against a stellar defensive front was bound to spell disaster.

I still think this is an elite squad if everyone is healthy.

I gotta agree with the sentiment, wile it was indeed bad,

I don't think it was significantly bad. Again this is likely top three if not THE toughest opponent of the regular season.

I'll wait and see. They played probably the best pass rushing team so I'm not sure. Running game needs to improve though.

Chiefs and Rams say hello.

I'm really not sure what you expect. There aren't too many backups in the league that aren't going to struggle at LT with a pair like Ware and Miller. If they can handle guys like that, then, we'll, they'll be starters making $10M per year, as opposed to $500K.

Monroe was out fast, but in his short time in there, he let his man off the edge for a sack and then got whacked, hurt and was out. Yes, he's better than Hurst, so indeed we want him back ASAP., but I'm not so sure he was poised to have a stellar outing either.

Of course Kubiak knew how to effectively neutralize and take advantage of the ZBS that he coached last year.

And he knew Joe's weakness....tight windows and no time to throw would make it difficult for him. I think it was coaching as much as the lack of playmakers, OL getting whipped, etc.

The thing is Denver's linebackers not named Miller or ware are average, average safeties and average interior line and they destroyed Baltimore's "vaunted" oline.

Their whole front was decimating people in the preseason.

This may sound like excuses but i feel it played a huge factor. I agree with what you said. But also we have to remember that this first unit oline didn't play together all preseason, Wagner was playing in his first real game action since his injury, KO was in and out of practice and the Broncos pass rush was just ridiculous. It was smart for Phillips to attack the oline like that. I think they'll be progressively better with each game. If not for that pass rush the offense would have moved much more freely imo. There were a few down field plays that were open for Sr and Brown but the pass rush didn't allow Flacco the time. I expect things to be much better against Oak.

That's because the pass rush from Miller and Ware was so effective that Phillips just sent run blitzes to slow the run game. Miller and Ware vs the Ravens Tackles is what did the offense in. The Ravens actually had space to work in the secondary but quick pressure didn't allow Flacco time to find open guys.

Definitely, he looked lost out there on multiple occasions. Wagner wasn't doing all that well either, tough day on the job - has to get better though. Hopefully we can get a confidence boost by stampeding the Raiders, so we'll face the CIN and PIT more even keeled.

We have to be 5-3 come bye week: split the games with CIN/PIT, beat CLE and SF and split between AZ/SD.

(Beat JAX, STL, CLE and MIA, split between SEA/KC and split between PIT/CIN = 11-5... is what I'd like see - lol)

broncos where top run stopping defense last season and we all know how good ware and von are rushing the passer.

we also saw that hurst aint close to being as good as Monroe.

also they have 2 of the top cbs in talib and Harris so its easier to send blitzes knowing those guys can lockdown their man on an Island.

Concussion. Hurst is an adaqauate backup but we need him back fast.

Hurst is not adequate. He is terrible. We need a better option at LT if Monroe can't stay healthy.

Wagner was almost as bad, the interior seemed ok though so that's a start.

The OL was atrocious. Most of them played like they forgot how to play football. It was the entire OL not just one guy, too. It's hard to hit the panic button atm but I certainly understand why some are.

As someone else already said, the OL could have chemistry issues since they haven't played together this year but that could also be bs. This is our same OL as last year sans Hurst but he played a lot last year, too, since was at LT while Monroe was out.

It could've just been the perfect storm. I wouldn't call our OL horrible yet after one game, but I'd lie if I said there wasn't doubt in my mind whether Castillo had much impact on our improved OL last year. This was a question of mine going into the year that isn't yet answered.

If the OL doesn't improve by week 4 I'd entertain moving some guys around. I'd rather have Urschel in there than an ineffective KO or Wagner. I can't see Urschel replacing Zuttah unless he's just horrible and everyone else is good. I am interested in seeing how well Jensen plays. I'd certainly put him at LT over Hurst next week if Monroe still can't play.

Did our "starters" ever play together as a unit in pre-season? I don't think so. It takes a while for a line to gell with who has who in protection.

That's true but this is the same OL from last year. Not a single player was any different.

Long off-season. I would really like them to play as a unit a bit more in pre-season next year. Seems like we get hammered in the first game too often. Having the first team work together a little more under live fire might be a good idea.
