[News] Late For Work 9/8: Ravens Have Become Trendy Super Bowl Pick

73 posts in this topic

The front end of the schedule looks pretty rough. A big challenge for me will be to not get overly discouraged and keep the faith past the earlier weeks if we lose a fair portion of our games. I am figuring that this year we will end up coming on strong at the end of the season and win the division. Home field advantage is the other huge goal this season so once we get the bulk of home games in the latter part of the schedule, have a few games under our belts to gel with many new players and get back Perriman and other injured players, etc, we should come on strong. Just need to eek out every win we can on the road to remain in contention til we hit our stride mid season. Then full steam ahead.

Those two don't necessarily contradict. I myself think we are the definite underdogs this Sunday, still I think we have a better chance to go further at the end then the Broncos. Why? This Sunday it will be a fresh, rested, motivated Peyton with a fresh, rested, motivated Broncos playing at home in a weather that really suits Peyton. Fast forward to January... a worn down Peyton in a january weather...

Now the other side: one of Flacco's obvious weaknesses is early road games. He won 3 of his 7 first road games of the season - and one of those (the 10-9 W over the Jets in 2010) was almost exclusively courtesy of the running game and the D. Flacco is a notorious slow starter on the road. Also, no matter how much Trestman is trying to build on Kubiak's O, it's still gonna be a new O, in real game situation for the first time. We can all remember Kubiak's first game as our OC - a hgely underwhelming first half, until it finally started to click in the second... Fast forward to January: it's Flacco's "natural habitat", when he is usually at his best. The whole Ravens programme is built around January football...

So, we can easily be the underdogs this coming Suday, still the favouriter over the Broncos on the long run.

Yes, Flacco can be a slow starter in away games, but that first game of the season Flacco is usually on fire.  In 2012 and 2013, to start the season, Flacco beat the snot out of the Steelers and the Bengals.  Yes, in 2014 they lost to the Bengals but that wasn't on Flacco.  He looked great, it was the receivers that looked terrible.  I think there were 7 dropped passes in the first half. I believe it was 3 by Steve Smith, 2 by Jacoby Jones, 1 by Torrey Smith and 1 by Pitta.  Those numbers might be off a little bit, but that gives you an idea of how bad they were.  And go back and look the 10-9 win over the Jets.  Rice had 43yds on 21 carries.  It was  Flacco that was 20-38 and 249yds, Those aren't great stats, but they are decent for going against a strong defense and I remember Cromartie was flagged a few times for PI.  They should have had another TD during that game but Boldin broke in and Flacco threw it to the outside and Cromartie intercepted it, i believe at the 2 yd line.

And were did Hensley get Perriman has a sprained PCL from. No one on the Ravens has stated exactly what the problem is from what I've read, but Hensley said it, so it must be true.

He isn't the only one to speculate on that, but no, the Ravens haven't confirmed it.

However, I think its pretty obvious that the "deep bruise" the organization originally listed it as isn't exactly accurate at this point, given the length of time of recovery.

A posterior cruciate ligament sprain can take six to eight weeks to recover," Hensley wrote. Well Jamison... Even if it's the 8 weeks, He injured the knee the beginning of July.... So even at that, your speculation could be up to a whole month off. I hate when the media makes "assumptions".... You know what that often means.

I think your timeline is a bit off there...

2014: Ravens lost 23-16 at home to the Bengals. Flacco threw for 345 yards on an unbelievable 62 passes with 1 TD and 1 INT. He was sacked three times. The Ravens did not score in the 1st half of that game.

2013: Ravens lost 49-27 at Denver. Flacco threw for 362 yards on (again) an unbelievable 62 passes, with 2 TD and 2 INTs. He was sacked four times.

2012 we stomped the Bengals at home and 2011 we stomped the Steelers at home.

So the last two seasons, we've lost twice to open the season, and due to a combination of a number of factors, Joe's throwing 60+ passes in that game and has a TD to INT ratio of 1:1

Needless to say, if Joe's throwing probably even north of 50 passes in this game, somethings gone terribly wrong.

It's been noted a plethora of times by John And reporters that Perrimans knee injury was not a bruise and something more, the bruise is and has continued to be a misconception by unaware fans, Perriman also had an Mri that proved that there was no "additional structural damage" to the knee that was obviously already damaged. Point is, it was never a bruise and John made that clear.

I think that Hensley is "assuming"...  or  "speculating"....

Well, I think his assumptions are correct, at least in the regard that this isn't just a bone bruise...

Its kind of ironic though, because this board very much LOVES to speculate, assume, etc. but now nobody wants to talk about the big elephant in the room that is nobody has any vague clue what the problem with Perriman is, yet he hasn't played football and the issue hasn't been really addressed in months.

Actually it was the 1st day of training camp, July 30th.   Thursday will be exactly 6 weeks.

As I look over our schedule this year I make this Denver game the toughest one for us for all the reasons already stated on this forum. As strong as I am routing for us I'll be truly amazed if we win. The only other game in our schedule that comes close is Seattle at home and maybe Pittsburg away. We've gotta lose at least one game this year, by all odds, and Denver is the most likely. If we win then we are a whole lot better than I thought we were. I'm hoping to be amazed come Sunday eve.

I don't think McGee's stay on the active roster is going to be a long one. I don't see us carrying four RBs all season, honestly, and as soon as Taliaferro gets back, I would think what he showed in the pre-season, is enough to earn him his #2 spot he was working for. Allen looked good at times, but he's not the bruising kind of "change of pace" back we need. Ferro is.

I agree at least Brown knows the plays. Perriman will be another first rounder that might get a start in his third year. Just watch and see.

I sure hope not. We need him

Daniel Brown had all training camp and pre-season to make his way up the depth chart.  He had a decent game in the 3rd and 4th preseason game against guys that are probably no longer on the skins and falcons rosters.  There's no way he's done enough to earn a starting spot at this point.

What else do you want the guy to do, mow your lawn? You say he had a decent game??, a blocked punt followed by a TD grab is more than decent to me. Stop hating

He is a developmental player, very probably nowhere even near starting caliber. It would be the reach of the century to put him on the starting squad. Sorry, it would make no sense at all.

Also: to be on the starting lineup, he would have to be activated and put on the 53-man roster. To do that, first someone should be cut from the roster. Who?

Bio I knew I was due for a quote from you. But how do you possibly have the facts that say whether he is starter material or not. 2 catches for 2 TD's. One came right after he blocked a punt. Stop hating on Daniel Brown. And you want to know who to cut... Kamar Aiken. Love the guys character but he goes down to easy.

nobody's hatin , it's called being a realist. Some people don't jump on the bandwagon when a player makes 2 or 3 big plays, esp considering the circumstances.

Like I said, he made plays against guys who probably didn't make the 53 man roster like Daniel Brown.  I guess the coaches are haters since they didn't put him on the 53 man roster, let alone make him a starter.

You remember Omar Brown's pre-season a few years back?

Needless to say, if Joe's throwing probably even north of 50 passes in this game, somethings gone terribly wrong.

You must have misread the post or forgotten, because the timeline was 100% correct. The Bengals loss last year was when we had about 7 drops in the first half. The int came directly after a drop by SSS that would have at least put us in FG range, and Jacoby dropped a TD, so it wasn't Joe's fault that we didn't score in the first half. He actually did play very well.

In the Broncos blowout loss in 2013, we had the lead going into halftime, and that was despite Dallas Clark dropping a gimme TD pass, which would have given us 20 first half points. So Joe didn't start off slow in that one either.

The overall stats can be misleading when you break down how they actually materialized.

this. that game was painful to watch. we had multiple first downs dropped, a guaranteed touchdown dropped, and i believe 80 something yards lost on drops, and that isnt even accounting for potential YAC, which i know on a few of those drops could have been big runs.

After the MRI, Harbaugh said there is swelling indicative of a sprain, and that's what (the doctors) are calling it. I'm not sure if he ever confirmed that it was the PCL ligament, but I have read that somewhere else, and I don't think it really matters. Depending on the severity, any sprained ligament in the knee can take a month or two to heal.

OK.....  So it's what we all thought...  Like I said.  Media is speculating, simply because they cannot get any more information, and the fans "want" something from them.  Until I hear the Ravens Organization call it a PCL Sprain and he'll be out until October, I will treat it as such...  speculation.

Above is what you said. In 2012, we beat the snot out of the Bengals (which I believe you think was 2013). In 2013, we got destroyed by the Broncos, and in 2014 we lost to the Bengals.

We beat the snot out of the Steelers in 2011, hence why I think your timeline is a bit off.

Bottom line... the last two season openers, we haven't played well.

Well, it won't be until at least January before find that out.

Pretty much impossible to draw 100% future conclusions based on what happens in week 1 of the NFL season.

You'll have a good idea whats going to be an issue in week one, by the break you'll know if it can be fixed by the players ability. Jan it will be just  hindsight.

It's not just speculation that it's a sprain; that came directly from Harbaugh, who was telling us what the doctors told him. As far as the specific ligament, he reported Aug. 20th that Perriman had a sprained PCL. I'm not sure where he got his information, but he's not known for giving false reports, so I don't think he would just make that up. I don't think that really matters anyway. A sprain of any knee ligament can take a month or two to heal. As far as the timetable, Hensley himself acknowledged that it was just speculation based on the standard timetable for a sprained PCL, along with the chance that he may need some practice time before getting on the field in a game. He said he "could" be out until October. He didn't say he "would". Those seem like reasonable assumptions to me.

Perriman injured his knee on July 30th, not the beginning of July.  The 6 week mark would be this Thursday, September 10th.  I would guess based on the 6-8 week recovery period that Perriman will likely start practicing or taking part in individual drills next week with the goal of getting him back in shape and up to speed before the Bengals home opener.  That would be just over 8 weeks after the injury, and would hopefully give him some time to knock the rust off before we play in Pittsburgh.

Perriman's reported mechanism of injury (falling onto a bent knee) certainly supports the notion that he suffered a sprained PCL. However it's important to realize that knee sprains actually involve tearing of the involved ligament. The more severe the sprain, the more tearing involved. Based on the way the Ravens handled his injury initially (suggesting it was merely a bruised knee and he'd be "day-to-day"), it seemed likely that he suffered a Grade I sprain. However, if that were the case, he likely would be back practicing by now. I, like everyone else, can only continue to speculate at this point. But my best guess is that Perriman either suffered a Grade II PCL sprain or is battling a bone bruise in addition to the PCL sprain that Jamison Hensley reported. Bone bruises can be nagging and fairly unpredictable in terms of healing time. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the hold-up in his recovery.

You can read more about Breshad Perriman's medical history and PCL sprains in an article I wrote for Baltimore Beatdown here: http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/2015/8/21/9182471/perrimans-injury-and-past-medical-history-is-there-cause-for-concern

How can so many ppl claim that a guy that went undrafted over all in the the Draft who looked pretty good against 2nd,3rd string defensive secondaries in preseason should be a starter week1? i mean i know many things in life are relative, but not professional football. Bryn Renner and Daniel Brown are not ready for the starting lineup people. That is why Ozzie and Harbs have them on the Practice Squad. Thank the lord we don't publicly vote who starts, that's all i got to say. Leave that to the ppl above our pay grade.
