[News] Late For Work 9/8: Ravens Have Become Trendy Super Bowl Pick

73 posts in this topic

"Peter King was trying to comfort 31 other fan bases as soon as he predicted the Ravens to advance to Super Bowl 50."

I don't think he had to comfort the Packers' fan base though ;)

Just to see how silly this whole prediction things is -- the Ravens are the "trendy" pick for the Superbowl, but five point underdogs to Denver in the opener. Whatever.

I'm not at all familiar with the guy - and haven't watched Hard Knocks either - so please someone enlighten me: does this James guy have any P/K returning history?

Well, I mean, even SB predicted teams are going to be underdogs against good teams on the road. I'm not sure what the problem is there.

Those two don't necessarily contradict. I myself think we are the definite underdogs this Sunday, still I think we have a better chance to go further at the end then the Broncos. Why? This Sunday it will be a fresh, rested, motivated Peyton with a fresh, rested, motivated Broncos playing at home in a weather that really suits Peyton. Fast forward to January... a worn down Peyton in a january weather...

Now the other side: one of Flacco's obvious weaknesses is early road games. He won 3 of his 7 first road games of the season - and one of those (the 10-9 W over the Jets in 2010) was almost exclusively courtesy of the running game and the D. Flacco is a notorious slow starter on the road. Also, no matter how much Trestman is trying to build on Kubiak's O, it's still gonna be a new O, in real game situation for the first time. We can all remember Kubiak's first game as our OC - a hgely underwhelming first half, until it finally started to click in the second... Fast forward to January: it's Flacco's "natural habitat", when he is usually at his best. The whole Ravens programme is built around January football...

So, we can easily be the underdogs this coming Suday, still the favouriter over the Broncos on the long run.

Steelers grabbed Toussaint for information purposes. Sounds like there is only one spot on the active roster when they move Urban to IR to return but there is Magee and Charles James who are there to fill that spot. Also, the practice squad is at 10 players (Brown, Jones, Ross, Perry, Butler, Renner, Beyer, Johnson, Wesley and Reuland) so if James and Magee are signed, then someone is the odd man out.  (updated: Magee signed so it looks like we will see if James is signed and if so, who may be released to make room for him on the practice squad)

Not to my knowledge he doesn't but he is an athletic, versatile guy. I seriously doubt though that we are planning to add him to the 53, I think at 4pm when we throw Urban onto IR/DTR we are promoting Ross and adding James to the PS. Ross has known return talent and can contribute a bit to offense as well. James will be the first guy we call if someone gets injured but as of now he is probably PS bound.

Just announced per Ravens twitter ; Urban placed on IR-DTR and Magee signed.

interesting, I thought we'd sign Ross to be a returner, my guess is we aren't done making moves quite yet

A lot of people predicted we would take Peter Konz in the first round a few years ago. Now Atlanta has cut him and brought in Gino Gradkowski. I know a lot of people weren't happy with Gino here, but we should all be very happy that we didn't use a high pick on Konz.

I see your point but the Ravens have a tough road record and do much better at home.  The only good thing is who knows Kubiaks offense better than the defensive coordinator who worked against him all last year.  Granted Kubiak will change things up but he is what he is and I think that gives us a definite advantage.  If we can get after Peyton and rough him up a bit (with legal hits) then we might stand a chance of getting him to throw some picks.

I'd really like to see Daniel Brown in our starting lineup since Perriman can't start. I don't think people understand how important it is to have a big reliable receiver like him against a team like Denver, in Denver.

October of 2017??

Yea... right.. I know its frustrating but we have to remember that other teams are going through injuries with top players too. We just have to look forward to him returning and showing us what he can do. Missing dam near all training camp and practice will probably take its toll also though :(

I agree at least Brown knows the plays. Perriman will be another first rounder that might get a start in his third year. Just watch and see.

Lets just see after the Denver team what kind of "Team" the Ravens are.

Well, it won't be until at least January before find that out.

Pretty much impossible to draw 100% future conclusions based on what happens in week 1 of the NFL season.

"James also brings returner experience. The Ravens already added former Detroit return man and receiver Jeremy Ross to the practice squad, but Russell Street Report’s Ken McKusick would like to see James kill two birds with one stone."

From what I have read and saw on Hard Knocks, the guy is very talented and versatile. Houston was even trying him at  the Rb position. Pretty tough dude that plays like a "Raven". Houston fans also talk highly of him. Seems like a great addition. :)

So, now Perriman's injury is a PCL, and not a bruised knee. Imagine that!

That's Jamison Hensley's opinion.  No one from the Ravens' staff said that.

Ravens fate in Denver will be decided by the WRs and secondary. If SSS is neutralized we will see what Aiken and the others really have. The preseason wasn't promising. The secondary is healthier and improved from last year. How improved will be the key. Peyton will surely give us the answer. I think Forsett has to get 100 yds and the TEs have to come up big for the Ravens to stay in the game and possibly win. Of course if Joe has his usual 1st road game woes, a win is unlikely. If you're a glass is half full person you can see the Ravens getting to and winning the SB. If you're a glass is half empty person you can see how the Ravens could get nudged out of the playoffs altogether. This will be an interesting season. Go Ravens.

Daniel Brown had all training camp and pre-season to make his way up the depth chart.  He had a decent game in the 3rd and 4th preseason game against guys that are probably no longer on the skins and falcons rosters.  There's no way he's done enough to earn a starting spot at this point.

He is a developmental player, very probably nowhere even near starting caliber. It would be the reach of the century to put him on the starting squad. Sorry, it would make no sense at all.

Also: to be on the starting lineup, he would have to be activated and put on the 53-man roster. To do that, first someone should be cut from the roster. Who?

You think Hensley made it up?

We'll soon find out. Since the season is upon us, the coaches have to provide injury updates.  So we'll see.

But all the injury report will say is: Perriman, knee, doubtful ( or out).
