Merged....You Ready for Some (Regular Season) Football?

57 posts in this topic

Again, like last time you stated this to me, what are you taking about?

Edit - Seeing you're fairly slow, since when does one game make a deep threat?

Are you serious?  It doesn't matter if it's 1 game or 100 just the threat of someone with the proven ability to catch a deep ball is enough to keep secondaries honest and not crowd the box but I'm not going to regress with you just like when you had your Ray Rice pom poms out.

2014 playoff game- gronk/edelman/amendola combined for more than 250 yds and 3 td's ! Each of which was more than 50 yds. You probably think Jimmy Graham isn't a deep threat either. BTW why aren't you bandwagonning for Ray Rice to return to Baltimore. Sheesh

in 2014 Jimmy Graham averaged 10.1 YPC with a long of 29 yards. Crockett Gillmore averaged 12.1 YPC with a long of 22 yards... Deep Threat!

At almost 40 Smith could hardly be considered a deep threat but every dog has to get a bone and Smith will have plenty of them this year since he is our only real weapon!

Yeah this is gonna be his last year so I wouldn't imagine that he goes off for something crazy but I do think we see him do well later in the year.

If Perriman is ever able to get on the field that could be something very helpful as well given his great speed.

Still though back to Edelman, Edelman is a classic possession receiver, calling him a deep threat would be similar to calling Boldin a deep threat really. I mean maybe they have a couple plays in the entire season where they catch a deep pass but they are much better going underneath and getting first downs. Both are big threats to the defense because they are so good at getting tough yards but neither is the guy you send downfield all the time because most corners can catch back up to them. The back shoulder fade is a great way to use a more physical receiver as a deep threat like Jordy Nelson but Edelman isn't really big enough to count on that as he is more dependent on his shiftiness underneath to get yards.

If you want to look for a good deep threat, look at guys like Torrey Smith, DeSean Jackson, Odell Beckham, or Mike Wallace, those are guys the defense has to give a cushion to every play because they have the speed to break the game open. You could make the case we need a guy like that with Perriman dealing with the never healing knee injury of mystique and Steve Smith getting older as they really compliment the running game that we have and would open things up for us underneath. You could also make the case that guys like Gronk, Edelman, and Graham would help us as they are all really good players but while they are good players, none of those guys are really traditional deep threats. I mean all 3 would be fun to have but they wouldn't solve the problem of not having a deep threat as they almost always aren't a threat to score from 80 yards out unless the defense forgets how to tackle.

Ugh, for the 3rd time now, what are you taking about with this Ray Rice stuff? You have me sorely mistaken with someone else.

We all know the truth. You're conspiring with Ray Rice so he could be signed ;).

I'm pretty sure if anyone on this board publicy supported Ray Rice they would've been put on ignore immediantly, or gone into hiding after the backlash. You have a kid in your profile pic. Not to mention, you seem like the kind of fan that understands that Ray Rice was kind of done anyway. It's why he cannot get a job now. Once RBs fall off the cliff they fall off hard. Forsett himself probably only has a good season or two left. It's why Frank Gore is probably going to not produce this season.

As for Gronk being a deep threat. If there's any TE in the NFL at any point in their career was a deep threat, it was Vernon Davis..... That dude could fly. Sadly, he's stuck with no QB at the moment, and is kind of a crappy person. Edelman is an intermiediate threat.

You don't need a freaking deep threat to win a championship. You need a good running game before you have that. In fact, if you don't have a good running game, you're kind of screwed. Guess what? We have a great running game.

We'll be fine.

Does anyone remember the name Kubiak? He knows our offense better than our WR's do. Denver's defense runs the show in this game. Without a deep threat unfortunately this game is a laugher.  34-10 Denver

Yeah, but if it worked like that we would have smoked the Texans last year /w their former HC on our staff... that didn't exactly happen.

We probably know his system better than he knows ours, in all honesty.

The time has come to start talking about the glorious regular season. Our oline will be healthy and our offense should be firing on all cylinders. I'm beyond excited to see the boys play.

We match up well with the Broncos. Win or lose it should be a good game :)

Definitely, I'm always eager for football to begin but pre season just ins't the same. It's pretty boring sometimes imo, as nothing's on the line.

If the o-line and secondary stays healthy we will do very good this year, I bet some hard earned money on Ravens winning it all (fingers crossed).

You have won the award for Most Pessimistic Ravens Fan. Hands down.

Agree on the preseason and I hope you win your money.

I think we match up well with Denver.

Last time around, the Ravens had a ton of mental mistakes that allowed the game to get out of hand. If they play a clean game, and don't turn the ball over then I can see us coming out of it with a close victory.

If the Ravens take a bunch of dumb penalties on special teams, backing the offense up or allow Denver's offense to stay on the field by taking penalties, then it could be another 49-27 game.

There is no Super Bowl hangover this year, this team should be focused so I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that

Justin Tucker nails a 55 yarder late to give the Ravens a 24-21 victory.

While I hope you're right, I think there's a reason we always play them opening day.  And I hate that.  Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I don't find it a coincidence.  I'd love to play them with a few games under our belt.  We kept our 1's as healthy as we could, after a few injuries this preseason...  (fewer snaps).  I hope/think we are ready.

Manning is a heck of a lot closer to 40....  Steve is 36... 4 years to go, ya' know. AND Smith isn't showing that either... AT ALL.  I think he went 64 yards in preseason.  I'm not sure that's not considered a "deep threat"?

As lovely a play as it was, it was a short comeback that he broke of when the corner missed the tackle.

Imo a true deep threat is a 50+ yard bomb from Flacco's hand to the WR's gloves, sprinkled with a little extra YAC if possible. Smith did have plenty of plays like that last season though, Tampa and opening vs. Cinci comes to mind.

God I love Smitty, let's get him that ring!

Last year, teams attempted and struggled to shut down the run game and SSS. My question is with Perriman sidelined, whether this crop of WRs can keep the heat off SSS if Denver shuts down the run. The potential for success looks better than last season if Aiken, Camp, Brown, and Waller are all healthy. But, it's still a question.

I think what people miss is that Trestman is the best OC we've had in terms of scheming an offense to attack the defense. I had so much fun just watching his offense work this preseason. Trestman from what I've seen does a good job of attacking area's on the field and forcing the defense to react.

Two plays i really loved didn't even count. Gilmore's TD and Boyle getting called for OPI in the Redskins game. Both of those plays Trestman did a great job of moving the Safety and getting the TE isolated against LBs in space. Now of course Boyle ran the wrong route and pushed off and Gilmore's TD got called back. Now those weren't deep throws but my point is that this offense will manufacture deep plays in the absence of great speed.

Trestman obviously didn't show much in the preseason, i think without Perriman the 2TE and HB sets will be huge. Wade Phillips is a pressure heavy DC, i think Trestman is gonna put so much pressure on their LBs and Safeties to cover and play the run. This is a great matchup for the Ravens imo. Trestman will force the Broncos to stay in their base packages and attack Stewart at Safety. If Stewart doesn't stay discipline in his assignments it'll open up space for WRs to attack down field. It'll come down to them just making the play.

Well if you remember last year Torrey did next to nothing early in the season. It was the 2TE set that Kubes wanted to use to attack teams. I think we'll see a ton of this in Denver. Keep that defense in base packages but spread them out. I think both Crocket and Maxx(if health) have big games.

Not sure how much Camp has been game planned into the offense for week 1 with his injuries. Coaches might just want him forced on returns and spot duty on offense. So i think Aiken and Brown spilt reps. I know Aiken basically won the #2 by default but i'm not sure the coaches are sold just yet. He and Brown will kind of run a #2 WR by committee and the hot hand will get the reps. Imo

So who is gonna be our returner ?

Right now it's Campanaro, according to the team depth chart, but he can't go a day without pulling his hammy, so... If he stays healthy I love it, but there are obvious concerns

My obvious one is returner, however I rewatched the Eagles game with our 1's, and they ran all over us with our 1's. I am hoping Pees got that corrected now that Haloti is gone.

Along with returner, I'd also say the development of our WRs. Was disappointed in what I saw from them (outside of Smitty). Hopefully Trestman can alleviate some of these problems in that regard.

the outsides. wr and cb, both of em scare me. maybe having jimmy back is really all we needed, and maybe our current secondary with gameplanning and proper coordinating(unlike what you see in the preseason) is enough to stop the hurry up, but in the preseason when teams decided to up the tempo on us, we had no answer, hell it looked like the secondary just got demoralized and stopped trying when teams used the hurry up, maybe its just preseason, and maybe its a continuation of last year, we wont know til week 1.

the wr corps however, you cant be say "its only preseason" with them, we better hope perriman gets healthy and is the real deal, and if not our TEs better be even better than advertised along with our running game, because a wr corps of steve smith/kamar aiken/marlon brown isnt gonna cut it.

the rest of the team looks to be as dominant as ever though.

Suggs and Doom getting older. They'll be good, just not as good as last year. They'll start a decline but it won't be catastrophic.

Then staying healthy in the secondary

Something else bugging me is the Offensive scheming....With out wr deep threats, the safeties are creeping into the box, minimizing our run game. I hope we dont get too predictable either.

Also, Why are we opening in Denver again? Why isnt Denver opening in Baltimore?

The offense will still have deep threats. Speed doesn't make a deep passing game, it just makes the deep passing game more dangerous. In 2013 Trestman's offense was one of the beat at big plays down field and they didn't have much speed between Marshall, Jeffery and Bennett. It was the way Trestman creatively attacked defenses and the timing of his play calling that allowed that offense to be so explosive and efficient.

Not having guys like Torrey and Perriman means you just have to work harder at a downfield game but it doesn't eliminate it. I expect to see a lot more play action without Perriman. Also plays like back shoulder throws amd combo routes to win downfield.
