[News] Eisenberg: Don't Be Surprised If Ravens' Ozzie Newsome Makes A Move

83 posts in this topic

Think of triple safety coverages. Pees runs a hybrid 3-4 and having Will Hill, Kendrick Lewis, and Kam Chancellor on our back end. That would be insane. Already two of the best inside linebackers in the league and two of the best outside linebackers, if the defensive front stayed healthy we have Smith on the outside... That would be legit. I also agree Perriman when he comes back healthy will become a star. You know why? Baltimore usually never as their 1st pick start out with the starters. CJ Mosley last year had to work his way up for awhile. Seeing Perriman day one of training camps with the starters and picking him apart, along with his great film of saving Bortles' you know what several times, he can be the next Julio Jones. He can take his time coming back, it would be nice to have him but division games don't start till week 3 so he has time.

Oh man that would make my summer! Will and Kam would set the tempo every game with 2 or 3 big hits. Oh and have I mentioned that they both can take on any TE in the NFL and Blitz like LBers. Our hybrid D would be nasty and unpredictable...

I fully expect Ozzie to snatch a return specialist and/or veteran WR if one becomes available. And I wouldn't be shocked at all to see a veteran RB (for the veteran minimum, of course) come in - sorry, but Buck Allen has been the biggest disappointment of the pre-season for me so far - and even without that fumble. Until Taliaferro can come back, we don't have a legit depth behind Forsett...

I agree with you 100%, bio, both on what needs to be brought in And the assessment of Buck Allen. You know, I wasn't drinking the purple kool aid being dished out when we drafted Buck, but I kept an open mind. But, honestly, like you, even if the fumble hadn't happened, I just haven't seen Anything that has impressed me at all. No quickness, elusiveness, shiftiness, no anything. He just takes the handoff, moves a couple steps, and goes down when the very first guy hits him Every time. Magee has shown me more, and I don't think he's enough to go with behind Forsett. We need to add someone. Does Steven Jackson, sitting at home, have anything left? He was Always a strong runner. He might be able to help on short yardage and goal line plays if he does. Doubt he'd take the league minimum though. But for the chance at a ring, you never know.

How about giving Ray Rice a second chance . He'd be a lot better than Buck Allen .

First of all, although I would love to see that, I'm more than sure it's not going to happen. The owner would simply obliterate the idea if it went that far - and not because he doesn't like rice and appreciate what he's done for the Ravens - but because his name is still too much of a burden (however it baffles me...), and even twice as much with the Ravens...

And another thing: he's been out of football for a whole season, and out of his standard form for two. We have no idea in what shape he is. There's one thing everybody seems to agree on: one whole season out of football and without some kind of in-a-system training almost certainly does huge damage. So, Rice now is probably only a shadow of what he used to be... We will almost surely find better alternatives on the "open market" once the final cuts are made.

So, in a nutshell, I think Rice has no future in Baltimore. Sad but true.

I am 'surprised' that this has to be a surprise enough to be written.

Yeah...

"BREAKING NEWS!!!! Ozzie may do again what he's always done and many consider his trademark routine!!!"

Riveting news indeed :D :D :D

I'm quite sure there will be available options when the final roster slimming moves are made - vets that are willing to come and be backups for - or around - he veteran minimum. Something like what Ricky Williams did. If not, Forsett's very example shows them that Baltimore is, indeed the place where you have a fair chance to get your career back on track: that if you're good enough, you can make it big.

Fred Jckson is probably out of this scope as he's gonna find starting role elsewhere (like in Cleveland) - but at least significant playing time. But there are gonna be vet RB's still serviceable suddenly becoming available...

As for Magee, he was very convincing throughout the pre-.season - but lets not forget that he mostly did it against the backups of the backups. We don't know how well he would fare against the first liners... And we won't learn it tomorrow, as its, once again, gonna be the backups... My predition is that we're either gonna roll with Buck Allen behind Forsett until Taliaferro comes back (with Magee being #3), or haul in a released veteran to be Forsett's backup, make Buck Allen #3 and send Magee to the PS (presuming he isn't picked up by another franchise first - which I don't think would happen). And once Taliaferro comes back, decide who to keep and who to cut based on the backs' performance up to that point.

And at this point comes the part when I have to realize I'm not Ozzie :D

Trindon Holliday has just been cut by the Raiders...

A fumbling one trick pony Raider cast off; see Matt Scab and Michael Huff

We need to look at everyone available for a return specialist. The fact is Asa should have taken that return to the house and didn't. He was gassed at about the 20 and noticeably slowed down. Go get him Ozzie.

Schuab is a solid back up.... I think Holliday may be a good pick up for returner he did incredible in Denver

Worth a look at least. The past (fumbles) always is a concern but sometimes a change in location makes a big difference. He could have a comeback season. Let Rossburg be the judge.

As far as can they get by without a veteran TE, why not? They had Dickson and Pitta in 2010 when Heap didn't play much and they lead the TE squad in 2011.

As far as does Ozzie make a move, I think its possible especially with still so many apparent holes. Even if he has faith in many of the back ups vying for the #2/#3 roles there are enough for him to be concerned about. The players I like in positions of need:

CB Tim Jennings would be my vote but he'd be a #3/#4 CB here.

WR Jarrett Boykin would fill in nicely being a former Aaron Rogers WR with a big frame.

They both followed similar paths: Ditched by The Texans and Raiders whom are both perennial bottom feeders. That doesn't bode too well in my book. Besides Trindon just returns kicks. They need a core ST's player not just a one dimensional body.

Got a question for y'all ... Can you alternate players on and off the designated to return list or is it set in stone? Just wondering if it's a good idea to put Brent urban on it or not.

It's set in stone.

Shaub seems to me like someone who doesnt even really want to play ball anymore...but, also his value isnt imo as the backup Qb either, first off, he will likely never see the field as Flaccos Backup because flacco is an ironman (knock on wood). But what Shaub does offer, is someone who was VERY successful in this exact type of west coast offense that Kubiak impregnated the Ravens with last year, and an offense that for the most part stayed the same outside of personnel changes. Shaub's value as Joes sideline confidante on the other hand is of great value. He likely understands exactly what Joe needs to be doing and learning as far as this offense is concerned. He offers Flacco a speedier learning curve from his own experience in leading a high powered offese, as he has done for years, 2 probowls etc. Shaub has already recvd the guaranteed salary/contract and cutting him is not an option from my understanding. I too believe that Bryn Renner is a good prospect and for some reason garners a Kurt Cousins type personality that the team rallies around, but if hes never on the field, what good is that. He offers nothing, not even experience on the sideline and Shaub is perfect for that. So im looking at what i think Ozzie/Brass sees, the bigger picture here. What we could use is another stud at RB, and perhaps an addition at WR to make sure that we have depth until Taliferro and Perriman return. Both of which i think are bigger issues right now

Matt Schaub is just being who he is. Unfortunately that's why he's out of two starting gigs. He routinely plays up to par in stretches only to squander everything with bad decisions and interceptions. I'm not insulting him. That's simply what he does. As starter his career is over baring the most desperate of teams. As backup he provides , better continuity as pocket passer.  Matt's exit is already scheduled after this season so Renner may stick around as Joe's apprentice.  I could live with that.
