The good, the bad, and the really bad vs Washington

When Joe was in the game only 2 balls were caught by any receiver not named Steve. Our WR core is screwed. Perriman seems to be doing his best Dennis Pitta impression. If our only viable WR is a 38 year old man we have an issue.

He's 36, but we have much more...  Gilmore, Maxx Williams, Aiken...  and Dorsett out of the backfield just to name a few.  No panicking, we'll see in 2 weeks.  We've only gotten a snippet of what's really out there.  Lots of teams are facing similar issues... Just check out Green Bay...  I feel for those guys.  They're my second favorite team.

So hard to use him on deep routes and in the endzone but easy to use him on slants, comebacks (see the play Schaub was sacked on) and any other short route possible?

If he's getting jammed then he's being jammed no matter what route he runs minus a quick slant or screen.  My issue is they aren't calling routes for him that play to his strengths.  They are keeping him on short and a few intermediate routes.  With Perriman out, Waller should be the deep ball guy and should be the endzone jumpball guy

I think they're keeping him on a short leash right now in preseason...  another game of hide and seek too.

It's preseason, we were up 10-0 with our starters and then Aiken gets pile driven without a penalty called, the drive stalls after a scrum, S. Smith gets ejected, a Gilmore TD is called back and we settle for a field goal.  It's 13-0, a few minutes into the 2nd quarter and its over.

Without S.Smith in the game Flacco cannot find any rapport, and Tucker misses a 46 yarder.  Out starters depart.

Washington plays essentially most of the game with their clear #1 Quarterback and he wears down our 2nds and 3rds.

Buck Allen fumbles one away. We lost 11 clear points we should have had, but we are not as good playing our seconds for the 3rd preseason game in a row.  The secondary looks horrific but for Will Hill. Is Jernigan ok?

They may be saving Waller. No one really shined. Butler wasn't bad. Why Keenan Robinson wasn't called for a WWF move is beyond me.  Aiken invited it with the backward crab move. What was that? We have problems and so does the league with the officiating.  Or maybe its just the officiating in games we play.

Yeah, I was scratching my head on how they used him also.  When Asa got the ball inside the five on that return, I turned to the group I was with and said "watch for the fade route to Waller".  Boy was I wrong on that.

Waller is a 6'6, big bodied WR with long strides that make him deceptively fast.  So instead of sending him deep or giving him jump balls in the endzone, we have him run nothing but short routes in three preseason games and don't throw his way on the goal line outside of one screen pass at the 5.  This is giving me flashbacks on how Stallworth was improperly used

The grab on Aiken was legal, lots of guys turn backward to catch a pass, and then turn...the pile drive was not.  It was not invited.  That's not even a legitimate statement.

Didn't see the game last night and just watched the first half.

The offense dominated and if not for some horrible officiating I'm confident they would have put up at least 28.

We are in a very good place at TE.

Butler seemed to play better than Waller. Not sure what that means moving forward.

Jensen didn't look to be hurt too badly, just got his bell rung.

Secondary looks like they are a work in progress.

D. Smith may be our best player on D. No question he is the most consistent.

I haven't watched the second half, but I'm not sure what all of the doomsday predictions are about. The starters on O still looked good even after losing Jensen and SSS. Seems the main concern remains the same from last year and hopefully the secondary will improve as they play together more.

oh.......... and skins 52 will be getting an envelope delivered to his locker this week. Haven't seen a nasty foul like that in a long time.

Here it is.  Count the crab steps with his back to the defender in the linebacker zone.  What is he doing?

It should have been a penalty, but what is Aiken doing? Is that his move?

I've seen it.  The play was developing.  I don't think he "invited" that at all.  Nobody throws a player into the ground head first like that.  Aiken was beyond the first down marker, and turned to catch the ball...  I'm not sure how that is so awful.  Aiken has been a good ball catcher, even last season.  He didn't drop much.  Remember; this IS preseason. I will not transfer blame to Aiken on that...  That's just crazy to place any blame on Aiken in that play.

Slants are used to beat the jam, and they are also used plenty by big guys to use their size for position. If he is getting jammed, he can't run a fade until he gets free. He was the first option for Joe on a play where Joe got rushed and eventually threw it away, but he couldn't even get off the line to provide a target. Maybe he was supposed to run a fade there, we will never know. He was forced to break the route off early, but the ball was already thrown to the sideline by then.

So, yes, the routes he has been targeted on are both by design and due to his current weaknesses. Think of it this way, if he starts winning on slants regularly, those fades will open right up. Just be patient while we figure out how to best use our LAST draft pick.

Can you post the link or screen shot the PFF page you're referencing?

Pretty sure that word "link" at the end of his post is the link.

It's preseason. Maybe Trestman  wants to see Waller be more than 6'6 wide receiver making plays at the goal line. It's been mention alot that in practice Waller been used in that fashion but when preseason come around it's possible Trestman wants to evaluate Waller ability in a different fashion..

Some good things I noticed from the offense and the defense.

First team offense seemed to be moving the ball any way they wanted despite being banged up. No Camp, Monroe, K.O, Maxx Williams, and Breshad. Some things I didn't like on offense was when Steve Smith got ejected the offense slow downed a lot. I know some of it was because of the injuries, but still didn't like that I noticed that.

On defense we were great when the first team was in there, but as soon as the 2nd and 3rd team players got in there the Redskins got hot. Unfortunately the same thing happened in all of the preseason games. Which makes me believe that we have no depth this season. Another thing that angers me is that corner backs make it to easy for offenses. Same mistakes from last year, can't tackle when receiver is in front of you, too much cushion, no route recognition. Also I saw Terrence Brooks flying around the field that was good to see. In conclusion, I am not to fond of our secondary and backups.

I firmly believe that with camp and maxx in the fray along with the vertical threat or decoy that is perriman our offense will be fine.

WE DEF need to bolster our Secondary. There is no way harbs and ozzie can feel comfortable with what they have seen esp after last year.

Generally speaking:

Good: The first team Offense and Defense in general. First team secondary still have a few issues but better than last week.

Bad: OL backups as a whole; DL backups against the run; CBs, as a whole; the return game as a whole.

Besides Steve, the other WRs on the field have yet to earn trust. I didn't blame the miss connect to Waller crossing on neither Joe nor Waller. They haven't worked much with each other, so the timing and chemistry should get better quickly.

The secondary has work to do. Many of the CBs were caught looking into the backfield while the WRs got away from them. Whoever is coaching the CBs could be a part of the problem. Much of what I observed, I believe, is correctable with most of the CB/DBs that are here.

Renner has more upside than schaub and is currently just as good with better mobility.

Steve Smith is the man!

(Just a thought) Current injuries could make cutting healthy players a challenge.

I thought Aiken looked pretty good. He had some nice catches and there was this one play where he should have had a reception from Schaub but the pass was poor. I thought he did well. Other than him the other WRs surely didn't impress outside of SSS.

this..i am not enjoying how the offense is using waller.

slants? really?..throw him a few jump balls

i haven't seen one attempted..which is ridiculous

im hoping that we are just trying to keep a lot of plays under our hat. I don't think trestman is calling a lot of the plays that will actually be used in the regular season.. We need to keep some plays secret so Denver won't be able to plan for it. Once again, it's the preseason so don't expect trestman to really utilize the playbook. It's nice to practice them in game situations, but some things we can practice against our own team.

Here are some of my notes from the game -

-tray walker and Asa Jackson looked absolutely horrible in coverage and with tackling.

- Asa had 1 nice return but couldn't seem to put the afterburners on. Also made a bonehead play where he didn't call for a simple fair catch. Excuse me but one long return in which he couldn't even get in the endzone does not make me feel better about the return position. Once again we saw several muffed balls. We really need to go out and get a specialist.

- the referees really ruined the momentum we had goin by ejecting SSS and then negating the spectacular Crockett td. Steve didn't even throw a punch. Either way he had nearly 100 yards before the end of the 1st quarter. I'm sure we can expect to see much more of Steve lighting it up this year. That's somethin I'm def excited about.

-Crockett Gilmore made a gronk-esque type play where he bulldozed several defenders and dove for the td. Can't wait to see more from him and I expect him to light it up this year as well.

-flacco looked pretty smoothe. No worries here.

- we obviously missed talioferro dearly and we are going to need him badly for those short yardage situations. Desperately hoping he's back in time for Denver ( not holding my breath) bc buck Allen looked less than promising. I didn't seem him run for more than 2 yards not even one time. I don't care how the Oline performed, you have to do better than that, and you cannot turn the ball over, particularly on the goal line.

- lots of fluke plays that hurt us. Can't really do anything about that, it happens.

- we need to get an injury update on Jernigan. He didn't appear to be seriously injured but looks can be deceiving. He and Brandon Williams are the heart and soul of the d line and he is also desperately needed this year. Fingers are crossed that he's ok.

-Matt Schaub ! What can I say? One word, ugly.

- we could have had several more sacks if our guys would just wrap up. Saw a ton of poor tackling , and that is one thing that frustrated the hell out of me last year. Also once again our d line is making all the interceptions. Where are all the turnovers from our secondary ? They have showed absolutely nothin, and that has to change. We need guys to make interceptions and splash plays, and it seems like they play so far off the receivers it's almost like they are just letting them catch the ball. Go after it, we need ballhawks!

- finally, we obviously need perriman back to stretch the feild, and we need camp in the slot. It's essential that we get these guys healthy. They are the missing peices and once they both are good to go our offense is goin to be a real force.

- I take the final score with a grain of salt. Our first team was dominating, and several things we did would not have been done during the regular season, which is typical. However we have got to get better in the goal line and punch the ball on the damn end zone. Too many times have we been stuffed 4 plays in a row and left potential points on the feild . Again, this is where we need tali.

- have to get better at clock management. We are constantly taking bad timeouts. We also had another delay of game that hurt us bc the play call was late coming in. So the coaches need to work on things just as much as the players.

- Overall I am pleased with our team, but once again it comes down to the magic word; HEALTH.

Talieferro should be back for week 3 or if we are being optimistic week 2.

Campanaro is the key . Also I'm hopeful that jernigans injury is just a week to 10 days thing. It didn't seem bad. He walked with his full weight without much of a limp.

He listed 2 players who have an injury history and said that if they are not injured that the offense will be fine but yet somehow our secondary which has exactly the same problem needs depth?

I'm very interested to see if McPhee can keep up that level of production without Suggs, Doom, and Ngata and as an every down player.

I doubt it..but he worked very well in our system

he's not adalius thomas quality and even he struggled outside of his first season in NE..although he wasn't getting any younger

An option would be to take a chance on Aldon Smith. We could give him a new role as a hybrid OLB/DE. Not sure about his suspension status but i don't think its for the full season or anything is it?

kinda sucks that the broncos picked up mathis. When that guy gets a grip on a d linesman..its over..they aren't getting any pressure on anyone.

How did Arthur Brown do last night? I missed the 2nd half of the game.

A lot of the same on defense.  He had some moments where he really flashed his ability, and other moments where he completely took himself out of the play.

I was oddly impressed by him on special teams.  He had 3 plays that stood out to me - a near blocked punt and 2 efforts on returns where he was the first man down the field.  Made a nice tackle on one of them, I believe.
