[News] Who Is Ravens' Deep Threat Without Breshad Perriman?

69 posts in this topic

Certainly Aiken is not a deep threat. It would be foolish to send him deep.

Frankly, I don't think we need a deep threat if we keep moving the chains. With the tight-ends and guys who can catch the ball and get separation, Trestman's offense can move the chains.

Too many times, I've been frustrated with Flacco's deep throws. He rarely connects and even if he does the receiver has to adjust a lot to catch it.

Not sure why people think it is foolish to send Kamar deep, as he got behind the DB's, and Flacco under threw him...Speed help, but good route running will get you separation....CJ, and Fitz never has blazing speed they run solid routes to get separation....And we have to take advantage of matchups, like if Waller comes in as a number 3 or 4 WR, LBers, and Safeties will have issues with his size and 4.40 speed....JMO....

It's not unrealistic to hope for Perriman in week 1. I'll just keep my fingers crossed. I don't think we have anyone else with the same speed, we'll have to game plan for alternatives instead.

Tori Smith's Combine 40 yd time: 4.43 sec. Kamar Aiken's Pro Day 40 yd time, 4.45 sec. Who can get deep for the Ravens, now that Tori Smith is gone?

I think Steve Smith and Campanaro are our best receivers though there is not enough tape on the latter. What separates them from Marlon Brown and Aiken is their ability to beat the defender and go up and snatch the ball.

I haven't heard much about Aldrich Robinson, the we we picked up from the deadskins last year but he's a guy that can go deep an has speed similar to Torrey smith. I think we should keep him as a back up just in case perriman goes down again.

Who is CJ that doesn't have blazing speed? Surely you don't mean Calvin Johnson who ran a 4.35 40.

That said, I don't know why this is a big issue right now.  Torrey ran a straight line and caught a pass or got a penalty against the defense (outside of the times he simply couldn't track the ball).  His 4.4 40 wasn't that unique.  Waller also ran a 4.4 40 and can conceivably do the same thing.  Waller has better ball tracking ability and better hands.  There's no reason not to use him for deep passes until Perriman heals up

The need for a deep threat has to do with keeping the defense from compressing that side of the field. A deep threat opens other offensive options; not to say teams don't or can't get by without one.

Put Waller in with the one's and send him straight and deep. That should help answer the deep threat question.

I partially agree with you. I didn't mean to say we don't need deep routes.

Guys like steve smith can go deep with better route running. Perhaps the other slower receivers can do the same. I am saying we don't need a burner like Torrey to go deep just to clear routes.

"Who Is Ravens' Deep Threat Without Breshad Perriman?"

Nobody.

Exhibit #1: look at the stats: how many of his trademark deep passes Flacco attempted in the first two pre-season games.

Exhibit#2: His lone deep attempt i9n Philadelphia went to Kamar Aiken who was never a speedster, never a deep threat.

Exhibit#3: Really: name a deep threat on our current roster other than Perriman, with a chance to play more than a handful of snaps. Any guy.

This is a easy question, Darren Waller. Like Flacco said "I love to throw it up to the big guys"

Waller would have the speed, but he will be no higher than #5-6 on the depth chart (barring injuries to higher ranked WR's - which we all hope won't happen...), consequently he won't get too many offensive snaps - almost surely even much less than our #2 deep threat, Jacoby got last season.

Darren Waller 6'6 240 4.3 speed. Use him as the deep threat as Perriman cant go, I dont want to see however, slow possession WRs Aiken or Brown going deep. Use them for what they do best move the chains and middle of the field catches.

Then why was Aiken never used as a deep threat since? Not once. I mean apart from that not-too-promising one try last Saturday...

I guess he would have been used as a deep guy at least once or twice last season if the coaches thought he was good enough for that...

As for now, we don't have a deep threat. We can send a fast guy deep to keep the defense on edge. Trestman said that we had a good amount of success during practice, but come game time, Philly picked us apart on short and intermediate passes that kept moving the chains. Perriman is not in the equation. He's been out for an eternity of days. I don't know if he still has blinding speed. Hope so. Until that long awaited time arrives, we should, for the most part, play short passing routes. Flacco has the tendency to be picked off or comes dangerously close on his bombs.

Waller, although he was indeed promising in the first two pre-season games, he did it against 2nd and 3rd string guys. Also, he was a 6th round pick and called a develompental player by both Harbagh and Trestman, well into the camps (which is not at all surprising for a 6th round pick).

While he seems a promising prospect, I don't think it would be fair to put him on the field on a regular basis and expect him to deliver like a ready pro or an early-round pick right away.

Ozzie is 3 for 7 in first round picks since Joe was picked in 2008. He should seriously think about trading his number one for two's or bunch of three's and fours since he has more success in the later rounds.

We have a bunch of young Receivers AND Steve Smith, the Sr. We have coaches and we have a philosophy of "run First"! I B)

I Googled this because I wasn't sure what a group of Ravens was called! A group of ravens is called but a "unkindness" or a "clamor" were the two terms I saw.    :baltimore-ravens:

I'm sure we can find a "Finesse Receiver" capable of getting open among this Clamor of Ravens' Receivers!    :oldwiseman:

With Perriman likely not being productive early in the season, I am looking for Kamar, Camp, Waller to fill the deep ball void.

It is preseason, they don't make as many deep ball attempts.

Its actually a group of people that decide on who they pick, not just Ozzie. I do agree with you about some of our 1st rounders being bust players, but lets let perriman get on the field and perform before we criticize.

Once again, how long is Perriman out for? Is it a season ending injury? And who do the R's have left to stretch the field and stop the opponents from stacking the box? As far as this poster can see no one! Zippo! The only one with breakaway speed is Carter and he's far from ready for prime time.

A good double move by a receiver with good speed can get behind the best DBs.

Our WRs will have to rely on technique instead of speed to get open deep.
