[News] Late For Work 8/24: Why Terrell Suggs' Hit Was Not Illegal Or Cheap

93 posts in this topic

Notice how much of a deterrent Suggs's hit was? They didn't run the read option again with Bradford. We should be talking about the great hit Brandon Williams dropped on Bradford.

Starters were a disappointment, and the backups really looked like bad backups.....Not mch to take out of this game except the team as a whole can't blow it off as just a pre-season game....Eagles came out flying, and did so for 4 quarters....Don't make excuses, just work on fixing the issues...

Lots of "Suggs is a dirty player" garbage splashed all over the internet yesterday. However, the NFL Network on Total Access from 2 unlikely sources, Evans and MCGinhist, were very vocal in support of Suggs, saying the play was legal and would have played it exactly the same way as Suggs. If Philly fans are up in arms that Bradford could be taken out after 2 knee surgeries, they should direct their outrage at Chip Kelly for calling a read-option play which makes Bradford an at-risk runner. Suggs made a legal hit. Bradford will continue to be hit time and again and it's on Chip Kelly to not expose his QB with vulnerable knees with a play call where he can expect defenders to do their jobs and hit the QB who is essentially a runner.

Well, we find out that the hit by Suggs on Bradford was legal, Suggs knew that but it seems like the Ref's didn't know that. It's their job to know and they will mess up every game if they don't know the rule book, and if they don't know the rule book why are they getting paid??? For they caused the Ravens to have a 15 yard penalty because they didn't know the rules. How can you be a NFL Referee and not know the NFL rule book that you are supposed to know, maybe that should be investigated when the NFL is putting an inferior product on the field to referee the games!!!!

How about seeing how Terrence Magee would do at returner? I quite enjoyed seeing him play at times, he seems elusive, which I couldn't really see with Asa or Campanaro, though he isn't bad. Also, both Asa and Camp are important on offense/defense rosters, while we have depth at RB and it might be a way to keep a promising RB on the roster. I would really really like to see him try. If not, maybe look for a returner specialist among the rookie FAs out there.

Eagles and their coach went for the jugular. You can not convince me that they didn't game plan for this game. If they intended to embarrass they were quite successful. I would never have practice with them again. As far as Suggs is concerned I will not believe he did anything intentional. Go Ravens.

The Brandon Williams should become a classic! I want to see that in the regular season too!

As to Sizzle tackle: It wasn't pretty, but it was clean. Option is a nasty play for defense and as a linebacker I want to bash the QB as much as possible, so that they quit running it and make it easier for my defense to read it and allow no yards. Easy as that. As defense, you have to instill fear and unsettle the offense. This is football, not kiddie playground.

Who is gonna step up and take over at wide reciver steve smith a given but we need someone else to step up and take a game over conerback play look the same as last yr i hope we get better

The game wasn't as bad as it appeared.. yes the defense looked poor... but Philly blew the Colts out as well.. they are the only team running the hurry up offense in preseason... I more disappointed in the teams lack of focus... way to many penalties.. though Brenner looked the best... they were all off target...

Just ran across this article on Torrey Smith - kinda explains a lot actually especially about the pass in the Pats game last year.

"We're working, trying to get on the right track," Smith said. "Just little things; he has to learn my body language. I think I kind of spooked him in the beginning with my body language because I always tell him I don't look back. I know the route, I know where the ball's supposed to be. I'm not looking up until I have to."

@Ravensfansince03... Daniel Brown is likely a practice squad candidate... no way he makes it over Aiken... one play doesn't earns him a spot.. he has to stack plays to earn his spot... but I do like his size

Obviously I'm going to get a wave of down votes for this, but I think Suggs' play was unnecessary. I don't know that it's illegal, but I feel like any type of going low on the starting QB in a preseason game is crossing an unwritten line. That he's got an injury history just compounds it. A preseason sack or QB pressure doesn't mean anything for Suggs. I know I'd be upset if someone went at Flacco like that in the preseason. That being said, why Chip Kelly is running read option with Bradford is beyond me.

Here's my take...

There's a difference between a legal hit and a cheap hit. Was the hit legal? Yes it was. If this was the regular season would we even be having this discussion? Not a chance. BUT... it is the preseason. Was what Suggs did unavoidable? Of course not. He could have hit him higher.

I see both sides of it, and I understand both sides of it. I understand why an Eagles fan would question it, because frankly, it doesn't make much sense to hit him low in that spot in the preseason. There's really nothing to be gained by it on anybodies side.

I just wonder how Ravens fans would react if it happened to us. If Joe gets hit low on a handoff in the preseason, I would love to see what the reaction would be.

While I "might" tend to agree...  I just don't.  Unless Philly does something to correct the problem they have with their O-Line and the Read Option, Bradford is going to get pummeled.  And they need to correct this now...  not when the season starts and the refs start throwing flags like it's a P*triots game.

Dude has to learn to get out of the way....  or take the hit.  That's the difference with Pocket Passer... and Read Option Runner.

WOW....  really does explain a lot.  You know, Torrey...  sometimes your QB is under pressure and has to release the ball a little sooner, or maybe a little shorter...  or even longer...  You gotta adjust.  Even Suggs told him during the Super Bowl run, that "Sometimes you just gotta go get it"..  "Sometimes you just gotta be great"...  No finer words spoken from a LB to a receiver.

You HAVE to hit a runner low or you risk hitting them in the head. When the runner is bent over, there is no mid-section to aim for.

Forget about the Suggs hit...Lets talk about the Williams hit in Bradford right after he released the ball....He was on the sidelines for a bit, stretching his jaw back into place....

Everyone in the know of the relvant rules about the Suggs-hit declared it beyond any doubt that the hit was legal.

Case closed.

watched the titans and rams game yesterday and the exact same thing happened. They played a read option and they got at the quarter back, hard. no flag was thrown, even the commentators highlighted it saying the rams wanted to send a message not to run the play. The commentators mentioned the suggs play and said there should have been no flag thrown. We had a sloppy game with penalties, but i think the refs had a bunch of nonsense calls themselves

A subpar  O-line is an issue. Anyone who disagrees, please review our O's 2013 season. The only one where the Ravens missed the playoffs since the Harbaugh/Flacco tandem took over in 2008.

Luckily, unlike that time, now we have the right men - they "only" have to be healthy...
