Renner Yes - Schaub No

60 posts in this topic

I have seen enough of Matt Schaub to come to the conclusion that there is no up side to keeping him. There is a reason that he lost his job in Texas and Oakland. He does not appear to exhibit any confidence when he is on the field, and actually looks like he is scared to be on the field of play. I see nothing but confidence in Bryn Renner, and I think that he is a much better option in the future than Schaub.

In the future Renner will be a better option. Going forward this year, we need Schaub as the backup QB b/c even though he's looked terrible, he still has a ton of vet experience. That is more valuable than an undrafted rookie QB who's shown promise against 3rd stringers.

It's early and unlikely. We'll carry 3 QBs before we cut Schaub for Renner. Renner will probably take a year on the PS and have a real competition for the backup next year, as it is Schaub is pretty much a lock. Renner would have to go berserk these next two games to take out Schaub which isn't impossible but its not likely.

Renner is a second year guy but the point still pretty much stands

I think Renner is a better game manager and is less likely to cause the team to lose than Schaub. He seems like the prototypical backup QB.

Sadly, we gave Schaub an idiotic $2M, so....yeah. He'll be our backup no matter how badly he sucks. His "experience" has not gotten in the way of him sucking it hard everywhere he has played the last few years....if he ever sees the field for an extended period, get ready for a top 5 pick next year (or is that a pick 6??)

And on that note -- I'd certainly rather see what a wet behind the ears kid can do rather than Schaub. With Schaub, we know all is lost....with the rook, it's PROBABLY going to be ugly for us....but we don't know, maybe he show's us a little something. Certainly cannot be any worse than Schaub

In my own little world Renner is our back up QB in 2015.

Reality says he is signed to the practice squad and Shaub is our back up.

Lets pray for Joe.

Schaub is fine as the backup. He knows the scheme and has experience. I highly doubt that we'll go high passing if the unthinkable happens. Renner is easily our backup of the future though.

Unfortunately if he ends up on our PS, someone watching him play closely will snatch him and develop him for the future. Renner looks amazing playing with second and third stringers. Imagine if he was playing with the starters, and as some said in the New Orleans thread, with a starting OL. Renner may end up being another Tony Romo(a team tried to stash him on the PS squad but Cowboys signed him away from their PS) but hopefully we'll keep him as the back up and cut Schaub.

To my eye, it depends upon our offensive line.  If we can't heal everyone up, it doesn't appear Schaub is mobile enough to accomplish much.

Renner may lack seasoning, but he deftly gets out of a jam.

Someone mentioned confidence and it's clear Renner plays with it.

Now if our Offensive Line jells, Schaub will show more.

I'm guessing practice squad for Renner, but don't be surprised if we lose him there. I'd make him the #2 at this point and he has more potential to stay with us. Let's see how they look in the final two games.

Uh, no. That's crazy talk. I like Renner but I think he's destined for the PS QB position.

You should actually be hoping that whoever is the worse QB gets the back-up position.

Otherwise, when Flacco has one of those games like he had early in this last preseason game against the Eagles... you'll hear people calling for the back-up QB.

At least with Schaub, you won't hear that because he's pretty bad.

But boy, if Tyrod ends up succeeding in Buffalo... the wheels are gonna be greased on some good old "shoulda, coulda, woulda" talk. :242735:

I think we're way past that. Seriously.

confidence does not win you games or make you a good QB.

you need alot more then confidence to be an NFL QB.

Super Bowl rings sort of fix that especially considering he is basically perfection come playoff time.

I completely agree.  I like what Renner has done, but it is preseason and he is going against many players that won't even make the team.  I'd be happy if we were able to keep him on the ps and groom him.

Yes, he looked good and really bad at times against second and mostly third string players who won't make the team. Playing with our starters against NFL calibre pass rushers and premium DL and secondary probably wouldn't matter at all because he'll be playing with a starting OL and WR corps, right? Right?

No. Just because he had his moments against fringe players doesn't mean he'll be a good player. I think he'll have no problem passing through waivers. I recall Wenning looking halfway decent at one point last preseason and people said the same thing. Hell, I think some said to cut Taylor for him.

It's that time of year.  You'd think people would learn after this situation happening every single year.

3rd stringer plays well against other 3rd stringers.  Now he's NFL quality and won't clear through waivers.  Player waived and passed through, and sometimes not even signed to the practice squad.

It's a yearly thing lol

Yeah. I mean don't get me wrong--I'd really like to be able to cut Schaub and save some money and keep Renner but I don't see it happening. Maybe next year, but I don't think it happens this year. I'll eat my words if we cut him and he doesn't clear waivers though.

Another thing overlooked is that cutting Schaub doesn't actually save any money.  He got a $1M signing bonus and we guaranteed his base salary of $1M.  He's on the books for $2M regardless of whether he's here or not.

I remembered the signing bonus but forgot about the guaranteed base. Yeah, he's going nowhere lol. We're not keeping 3 QB either.

Renner is not facing high quality corner backs or a defense scheming against him. He's playing third string players vs third string players. With 75% of those players will not make any NFL team. I like his confidence though and would like him as a PS QB. Schaub on the other hand is having the backup guys going against other back ups and some starters. It's usually rough on the second string QB because he doesn't get the seasoned WR's or line help. I think Schaub has been okay with what he's had to work with. We'll see more from him the third PS game.

Yet another thing overlooked here.  Schaub had some issues (and it wasn't even really that bad) with probably the worst OL he's ever had in front of him.  The talent was severely lacking for him, and he still put up an alright performance.  I can't even say I understand the immense hate for him after the latest game, as he really wasn't that bad.

I like Renner a lot...but the kids has had 2 solid outings against 3rd stringers....let's slow down on him being the next Johnny U!  A year on the practice squad and then he competes next year for the back up role.  I am pulling for him as he seems like a good talented kid.
