[News] Defense Explains Reasons For Philly Woes

54 posts in this topic

As much as I hate Tomlin, I remember a fantastic saying he quoted after one of the Steelers brutal losses couple of years back. It went something like "Excuses are tools of the incompetent, so I won't be making any. We just were not as good of a football team as they were".

All I've been hearing from Ravens so far are excuses. "The headphones didn't work!! And besides, we weren't game planning anyway, so...". Well, you weren't game planning against NO as well, and it can't be said that the Eagles defense was running some major exotic plays either. Yet they executed and held our offense to 0! points for 3 quarters.

Stop blaming your issues on some outside factors and admit that our defense just sucked, our offense fell flat and Eagles' players simply out played our players. And say how it is - our team just is not as good yet as it is hyped up to be with all the SB contenders talk. YET!

But we have 2 preseason games and a long regular season left. We can get there, if we stop blaming bad games on bad technology or bad preparation and face the truth - we might not be as good as advertised, but we can get there if no one gets too cozy in their comfort zone and continues to grind it out.

There's long road to San Francisco and to third SB trophy. Let's get to work!

What is important is the fact that the D gave up 77 points in two games. This illustrates a coaching dilemma. The Eagles quick pace was surely a known factor and Dean Pees should have made some considerations to get the takeaways into our favor. I am really interested in game 3 and our response to this game.

Radio communication was down so that explained why they couldn't stop the run.

Thats crazy...Isn't it? In basic football terms, We got a beat down.

Right off the bat...The refs wouldn't let the Ravens D play football. Those early penalties on Suggs...and all he was doing was playing football.  The benefit of the game was Ravens OC Trestman was able to get some of Kelly's ideas on film and will put them into our offense.

It went great during the practice with the Eagles. This game wasn't a very physical game which is opposite of what you expect from a Ravens/Eagles game. The Referees wouldn't allow it to get physical. Our starting running game was moving along pretty good.

There were a couple of good clean hits. Suggs is like JJ Watt. The only way he doesn't play his game is to sit him on the bench.

Wow! I completely missed this during the game. I guess emotions can over boil when you're getting so completely whipped, but c'mon...this can't happen! We were lucky it went unnoticed. Unfortunately for McClellan this will probably mean he'll be out of couple of bucks. But next time it might be worse. Jeesh!

67 points, that is. And not only this, but the Ravens are dead last in yards allowed per game (and points as well, of course). And I KNOW, it's only preseason. But it's preseason for everyone. Yet somehow Bengals, Steelers and Broncos manage to be at the better top of the defensive stat lists. And we'll be playing against these teams almost 1/3 of our regular season.

The funny thing is, and I actually thought about this during our first game against NO, that our backups seem to be below par this year. Ravens typically have very strong 2nd and 3rd stringers, so even if the starters struggle, the backups are usually able to pull the game out. Not this year though.

In the NO game everything started to fall apart once starters left the field. It was one solid drive by the 3rd stringers that got us the win. And in this game, not even the starters performed well, let alone their backups. It were 3rd stringers again who were able to make something happen.

My question is, what has changed?? Aren't the backups just as good as they usually are? Or has the play calling been lopsided?

I hate to go paranoid on everybody here but it's fairly easy to create static at selected times with a simple wide band frequency generator.  Mind you I'm not accusing the Eagles organization but I am suspicious of their fans.  After all it is Philadelphia.

Your giving Philly fans WAY too much credit.

It's a practice game they didn't prepare for against an extremely difficult offense to study. The main goal for the preseason is to get out of it healthy, anything else doesn't really matter.

We didn't do that very well either.

Somehow the phrase 'our offense just sucked' doesn't strike me as very informative or helpful. I mean is that how you would coach a team? You would just assemble the players and yell at them that they sucked and then walk out? Don't you think that a little effort at what went wrong might help? I think you are confusing excuses with explanations. I, for one, would very much want as much of an explanation of why things went wrong so I could see what could be done to fix it. i think its time that we give up on marlon brown, kamar aiken, and deandre carter, yeah they have potential but how long does potential take? there just like deonote thompson, could be good but won't be. they should be cut because if hey haven't gotten it by now then they most likely won't get it. I would love to see how daniel brown does against the ones. WRs that make the team should be steve smith, perriman, campinarro, waller, daniel brown. and marlon brown if we just need to have 6 WR but I wouldn't be mad if we cut him

Hmmmmm.  I wonder why I'm thinking this came from some other team's general manager who'd like to get his hands on Marlon Brown and Aiken the moment we dropped them?  Or maybe from a relative of Daniel Brown?  Just saying .. . . .

Ya, that's a BIG problem! I saw that during the game but didn't notice that it was a flat out uppercut to the solar plexus! We can't have that kind of stuff going on EVER! I see a theme starting already with supposed Suggs's "cheap shot" and now this .gif.

Do we want the "Thug" lable?? That's not how we roll! If Harbs is aware of this, I imagine Mclellan won't see the field Saturday.

I'm not even mad about that game. Defense just squared up and that's fine. If these guys says it's no biggie then I give them the benefit of the doubt cos only them really knows the problem/issues. It's actually a really good learning curve for everyone in the team. Great to have that exhibition game with the Eagles. We'll be alright.

I would have excepted almost any excuse but telling people your phone system broke down?? Really?? I guess that is why the secondary couldn't cover squat! Or perhaps why they ran up the middle and we couldn't tackle or stop them!! Really?? Because the phone system was down. Sound like a bull crap ola excuse to me. The offence couldn't move the chains because the phone system was down? Give me a break. Sounds like a good excuse you tell your wife when you out late at night with the boys and you don't want to tell her your at the club. Hahahahaha We shall see.

The phones probably weren't all that was "cracking up". I'm pretty sure quite a few Eagles fans were, too.

D.Peas... this has been typical for him since he took over... he has a ton of talent... He just never seems to get the most out of them... we havent looked physcial since he has taken over... we dont have that same swagger on defense... We look soft (bend but dont break under Peas) and I have not been a fan of his style from day 1. Hope Harbs gets Peas under his thumb ASAP!

O baloney. Radio trouble. Give me a break. They flat out stunk the place out. End of story. Next they will be blaming the weather or the ballboy. What a lame excuse for such poor play, Man up and do your job.

Yep  67  sorry... I believe play calling is the issue and with the Eagles game the inept positioning in O and D resulted into less favorable  circumstances such as a slew of injured linemen and doubts of how we can hold our Defensive status.  Whoever the Eagles play this week can verify they are that good and we were average in the least.

The prized excuse of the week.  I would like to see Mink actually report that story with the same dis illusionment you and I share.

We didn't do that very well either.

I see the pre season games as a hindrance to the real essence of planning and winning a game.  The emphasis on avoiding injury actually gets players onto the pup list.
