[News] Ravens Preseason Stock Watch vs. Eagles

32 posts in this topic

Roster spot battles were the highlights of the game. Magee and others played with desperation to win a spot despite the odds. They were out there battling for their football lives.

As far as Darren Waller and Terrance Magee are concerned, I feel like one more good performance from them might just earn them a spot on the roster. They play like they want it.

Overblown coverage on Terrell's hit on Bradford plastered on every site today, accompanied by the "dirty player" accusations by the writers and fan comments. Even Bradford himself is fanning the flames accusing Suggs of intentionally targeting him. Ticks me off. Chip Kelly may want to rethink running a play like that if he doesn't expect Bradford to be hit because he will be hit hard again and again in future games. No penalty was warranted  on a legal play.

Renner will definitely be on the Practice Squad. He earned that spot before the first pre season game. The Ravens always carry a QB on the PS. Renner's performance in the first two games just guaranteed it will be him

Cassius Vaughn was everywhere in the 2nd half. Playing like he really wants a job. And Tom Nelson just continues to shine. Two bright spots in an abysmal evening.

Bad game for everyone, even the refs. There were some really bad calls. After the Suggs hit, it seem like the refs were nit picking every play. One of the contact down field call was so bogus. It's not much to look at on tape to see what can get corrected when everything went wrong. Throw it away and start new.

I would like to see Waller play more with the first string. Joe needs more continuity with his new receivers.Keep in perspective Brown is 2nd round pick still playing with 3rd& 4th string.

This game was a blessing in disguise. The talk of the town was way too positive and ahead of itself. Would you rather play like this now, or play like this walking into Denver? The Eagles regular offense is also something you need to dedicate a gameplan for, or you will get exposed. There were still some bright spots in the game. I though both Kendrick Lewis and Will Hill were flying around and hitting. Marlon Brown was open often and made some nice plays. Waller continued to impress and I think he is making this team. Zadarius Smith was getting after it. I thought Terrence MaGee looked awesome. He showed great vision, quickness, and the ability to run through tackles and pick up yards after contact. I know we also have Buck, but I would like to keep MaGee around. Lastly and most importantly, a position that may not be seen as a need, but always is: Bryn Renner. Wow. If you watch him in the huddle and lining up a bunch of mix match guys who might not even make the team, he runs the show and looks like a true leader. Schaub may the the stop gap this year if anything were to happen, but I think Renner belongs in this league. He has the arm, the mobility, decision making, and the leadership of a starting caliber QB. I would gladly keep him on the practice squad and let Schaub play out his contract. You can also tell that these young guys learn from Flacco. Tyrod looks like he actually developed into a decent player under Flacco. Everyone relax and realize it was just a preseason game, and now as a team they will refocus.

No one should get kudos coming off this game, especially guys who played in the 2nd half, against other guys who will be in the unemployment line come week 1 of the season. Need to see our 1's come out 3rd preseason game against the Deadskins and give some effort, need Webb to show he can still play in this league and we need someone to step up and claim that Wideout spot next to SSS.

That's why one shouldn't only read this website. Br.com seems to be very particular for the good news. However, if you read other sources like baltimoresun.com or csnbaltmore.com (now csnmidatlantic.com) and some other local sites, you can get a much fairer picture, because they tend to hold back the bad news much less. For example, if you only got your info on the joint practices with the Eagles, you may have the impression that we were basically dominating them. If you reas other sources, you might be surprised how different an image they were painting.

Baltimoreravens.com seems to have the philosophy of trying to feed the fans the good news, the promising interpretations, and leave the bad out as much as possible. When a certain receiver is praised on this site because he had one (ONE) good catch on a given practice day, however, on the other sites you read that the same guy had 3-4 drops the same day... well, you start to realize br.com is a great site - but not necessarily the most trustworthy one (and by that I'm not implying they lie to us, of course!) when it comes to practice analysis and player progression assessment.

Don't throw away the tape, just ignore the bad calls and focus on fundamentals from among the rookies, especially 2nd and 3rd string linemen which they tried to overcome their shortcomings/getting manhandled at the line by grabbing or being irrelevant by getting shoved around during the play. Several of our up and coming rookies got manhandled at the line, trying to be brutish on every play will not work in the NFL, proper body/arm/feet movement/awareness was badly lacking, time to go back to fundamentals and get more training/experience. Better to learn those lessons now and be better prepared during the season. Welcome to the NFL boys.

Magee had some good runs and showed quickness and Renner played very well last night, but against the Saints I was not impressed with Magee at all and Renner was struggling until that last game winning drive. We have to see more from both these guys. If they continue to improve I think Renner has an excellent shot at making the practice squad.

Well i do take some stock in these games, as training camp rolls along the play should progress and not regress...From not having a lot of penalties in the first game, they had over 100 yards in penalties this game, and to many for the starters....The starting defense looked confused, and were abused....We made Sanchez look like a Pro-Bowler...Just not a lot to like, especially when all 3 phases looked horrible....I hope this game humbles the team, and they re-focus...

Let's hold our horses here, Brown had a grand total of 1 catch in the 4th quarter of a blowout, that hardly puts him in the conversation for one of the last few roster spots.

@Veiledpsychosis, I will say this for Dan Brown, you can only judge on the level of competition they are playing against. And I do agree he had the catch of the game, a TD at that. Now yes it was only one catch but it was a TD. Also he is 6'5 225lb WR... If he he can come up with another TD and a couple catches next week. I would definitely take him another big body athletic target along with Waller who has made himself a almost lock with his recent performances.

Over the other options...possession WRs who cant get seperation. The only other guy that intrgues me is Tom Nelson the Welker/Campanaro type very shifter, fast WR who caught a couple yesterday and gets open at will

Not to many people were playing like a Raven out there yesterday until around the 4th Quater, all the penalties we accumulated early in the game, we shot our own selves in the foot, and then acted like it didn't matter. Arguing with the ref like you going to change his mind and his mind did not change, we still got the 15 yd penalty that put us in a bind. One thing we have to understand, the Ravens play the game but the refs call the game and will call it as they see it and not the way we want them to call it, even if we think they are wrong, so when you are out there on the field make the best decision you possibly can to help the team and not hurt them, and remember always PAY LIKE A RAVEN, GO RAVENS!!!

I think DeAndre Carter is done. I cringe every time hes back for to receiver a kick or punt and I think his catching a pass is about 50/50. Marlon brown has pretty much made the 53 man roster. He only caught a couple of passes but I saw he was open on a several plays and should have been targeted. I like Daniel Brown but he runs like hes wearing mud caked army boots. They keep saying how fast Arthur Brown is but I wasn't impressed on his pass coverage. He looked slow to me. Vaughn was all over the place, the man wants a job! If any of you seen the guy the Eagles had kicking in the second half of the game you probably had the same thought as I did..."what high school did HE come from?"

How undisciplined is Suggs? It is freaking ridiculous. I looked at his penalties from last year. He had 8 offside or neutral zone infractions. There was only one personal foul listed, but I could swear he gets one of those about once every couple weeks too. He has always been a cheap shot artist and trash talker. Hitting guys late, helmet to helmet hits and stupid penalties are just hurting your team Sizzle. There is no class in intentionally injuring someone, especially a guy who has had injury issues and in a preseason game that means nothing.

I really don't think that was a penalty, on the Suggs play. If the QB is thinking about running, you should be able to tackle him every time. I don't know if he hit him too low or if he was trying to injure him, but it looked like a legal play, otherwise. I hate when players tackle low, but I don't know that it's a penalty or not. I read somewhere on another site, that Suggs said something like, (loose quotes) 'If you're worried about an injury-prone QB getting hurt again, don't run the read option with him at QB.' You know, maybe they should use Tebow for that play, exclusively. I wouldn't risk it with Bradford, who has missed a lot of time with injuries over his career.

he wasn't intentionally trying to hurt anyone. He was just trying to make a play, and like he said, I'm sure he could have hit him a lot harder. He plays with emotion and he plays hard, that's all it is to it.

Terrence Magee did a great job, I just don't see how in the world we can find a spot for him and keep 4 RBs when he doesn't contribute elsewhere. I don't think he plays with the STs but I could be wrong.

I seriously think that webbs job is in jeopardy. Melvin has been making a strong push for the starting job, and even if he doesn't get it right away, Webb will be on a short leash. He has dissapointed over and over since camp began.

Magee stock went up in my book. Keep in mind he performed behind a make shift oline. I expect Wr Nelson and Daniel Brown to make Practice squad. Waller is that diamond in the rough. I think he has a high ceiling.

I think Tom Nelson should get a mention here. As a converted SS to WR he is showing he can be a steady and reliable target. Almost every time a pass went to another WR and they didn't make a play, the next pass went to Nelson and he did make the catch. He might now wow, but the first thing you want in your WR is the ability to actually catch the ball. Also, as a safety you have to think he'd be a ST guy. Didn't really get a chance on the returns, but I think he will play on the coverage unit. Deandre Carter is showing he doesn't belong on this team. The only returns he's had a chance on he's messed up and as soon as there is a body near him he can't make a catch. Renner looks like he is the PS QB and possibly the emergency 3rd QB. If Flacco does go down for a long period of time Schaub would get the call and perhaps the Ravens look for a veteran back up at that point. At RB I see Forsett and Taliafero...after that it is between Toussaint and McGee. I have seen nothing from Toussaint that makes me think he should be handed the job so it really is a battle for that 3rd RB spot. The only thing I did see from Toussaint was that he was making tackles on ST. I could see that swinging the pendulum in his favor. I am surprised to see Carl Davis not getting a mention here. He was raved about in the first game, but as I pointed out, his name wasn't getting called until he was going up against the backups on the Saints. I don't think he was mentioned at all against the Eagles. Then again, most of our D-line was not a factor. Bilukidi made a couple plays. Pre season is what it is. You can't really take too much from it other than just how guys are playing. Right now we got a lot of guys that really just aren't playing well on a fundamental level.

I still can't believe out of all the QBs in the league, we get Matt Schaub! Smh unreal. But on another note, this Waller kid is pretty impressive, so is this Renner guy. To me the player that shined the brightest was Melvin, I like him a lot...he definitely deserves to take some snaps from someone. And Mr Kyle Arrington, what is going on bro?!?! You look lost out there my man. Let's get it together Ravens.

I feel bad for Carter muffing those two returns. I can only imagine his frustration. I hope he makes the PS and gets another chance next preseason.

Tom Nelson looked like someone who knows the game. Would like to see him play more. Reminds me a bit of Welker. I hope that Brown, Waller, and McGee get a chance to play more. People think that the best player makes the squad--perhaps but it seem like players who are drafted have the advantage even though they may not perform as well as free agents.
