The good, the bad, and the really bad vs Eagles

206 posts in this topic

There were some positives…

Allen, Magee, and Toussaint all looked good at RB

Jensen played well considering he's not a LT and has been forced to play there

Za'Darius still looks active as a pass rusher

Melvin looked good at CB, as did Vaughn

Much more bad than good, but some bubble players did well for themselves.  Others… not so much.

Honestly, this game reminded me of the 2012 preseason game against the Lions. We started out the first series with a good running game but turnovers ended our drives. the offensive plays were good consdering Marlon was wide open but Flacco simply overthrew him. You can't blame the OC when the QB simply make a bad play.

In the lions game, Stafford went 12/17 for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns with Calvin Johnson having 111 yards and a touchdown. Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith got abused in that preseason game and everyone was freaked out over our struggle. This game was similar to that game in that we simply werent' prepared for what the other team ran. I am not worried in the long run. We just need to learn from the fast paced sets that the Eagles run and focus on covering the underneath plays.

The penalties were simply bogus with us getting flagged on every single possession.

Honestly lack of depth of pass rushers. We always have some dline man buried who can do some damage. But even z smith seem marginal as pass rushers

2nd team defense has looked terrible in both games.

Schaub is painful to watch for the most part.

Looked like a team attempting to find itself and having no luck.

Eagles appear to have a better understanding of who they are on both sides of the ball.

Our defense appears much like last years. Can't get off the field.

The run game started out good with 2 of our starters out on the O-line (and arguably our top backup in Urschel). Keep in mind we're also missing Perriman and Campanaro (who will probably get a lot of receptions) and Pitta, if he ever comes back. Perriman will really change the offense.

Melvin and a few other defenders played well. I didn't watch the backups. There were just too many penalties.

Full rundown...

QB:

Flacco had a rough one for sure.  Schaub was up and down.  You saw some things you liked and others you really didn't.  Renner continues to be a bright spot at the end of the game, but lacks NFL QB qualities other than his mentality.

RB:

Good all the way around in my opinion.  Buck looked much more comfortable than last game.  Magee and Toussaint came out hot and put up some good tape.

WR:

Mixed bag.  Aiken, Brown, and Butler all seemed relatively solid.  Waller continues to look good.  Nelson is earning more opportunities.  Carter literally and figuratively dropped the ball.  Daniel Brown came up with a nice grab as well.

TE:

Like last week, it was solid play.  Not too much to talk about, but that also means there aren't too many negatives.

OL:

Hard to get a read with so many injuries, but major props to Jensen.  Versatility is a major plus.  Pretty much every UDFA we saw has proven themselves as camp fodder only.

DL:

Quiet game here, as my standout was Bilukidi.  He was very active when he got in the game.

ILB:
Brown and Orr had pretty good games, and McClellan even had a few good plays as well.  Makes the decision here much tougher.

OLB:

ZDS remains active as a pass rusher.  Still a lot of work to do, but it's a positive first step.  Beyer is still so athletically limited.

CB:

Melvin was my standout here, and Vaughn would be a close runner up.  Walker is not near as raw as I expected and I continue to come away impressed with him.  Pointer was quiet, which is tough with Vaughn's good game.

S:

Another mixed bag.  Levine and Trawick both had some good moments and bad moments.  Brooks can't get back on the field soon enough.  Perry had an awful game in my eyes.  His angles were brutal and he missed a few tackles.

Looked like a Dean Pees defense.  Everyone looked confused.  Nobody seemed to know where to be.  Pees could have all the best players in the league on d and they still wouldn't get off the field.  There is no logic behind the scheme.  Offense was hard to tell.  People were open, QBs made bad throws.

One thing that irked me on offense was 3rd and goal, short yardage.  We need to get up to the line and qb sneak.  It worked so well last season, I don't want us to go back to trying to run the ball through a wall and losing yards like years past.  Just watching the patriots gain about 6 yards on every short yardage qb sneak attempt has me asking "why can't we do this?"

Far too many penalties. Offensively, I thought we ran the ball pretty damn good considering the line we had tonight. Flacco can't sail the ball like that and expect to win, and he knows that. Defensively there isn't much positive in terms of the starters. Arthur Brown stands out amongst the backups. Our offense really missed guys like Camp and Perriman with his size and speed.

Full rundown...

This is a good breakdown. We've had a lot of starters out, and when you piece all the positives together, you still have a really solid roster. Unfortunately there are more bad patches mixed in than we've been used to. This is a very young team.

Waller belongs in the NFL, the Ravens no doubt will keep him. I love watching him play. Big and super fast dude for a WR. Gonna have a bright future here.

Certainly wasn't pretty, but there were still positives to take away from some of our young players that will actually factor into the roster.  It sucks to lose, but there will be a lot to learn from this game and hopefully that makes us better.

I thought Arthur Brown had some good moments. Marlon Brown made some plays  and seem to be open quite frequently. Nobody really stood out in the pass rush department  and for some reason I'm kinda liking Tom Nelson as The Ravens kick returner. Deandre Carter was disappointing especially with the talk about him being impressive in camp but he may be a guy The Ravens could just stash on the practice squad.

I thought it was surprising to see Camp inactive for this game but maybe he impressed so much in practice to the point The Ravens didn't really need to see him play in this game. I thought Tray Walker made some plays and he plays quite tough as well.. I wasn't sure if Terrence Brooks played  in this game and Renner sure did look good throwing the ball. He looks like totally different passer now than from the last game he played in.

Cause it's preseason.

And that explains a lot of what we tried tonight. Sure, I was not happy about the interceptions, but this is the time for Flacco to figure out how fast his receivers run during a game when adrenaline is flowing.

What happened to the postgame show?

Just cut out and the news started, but the Ravens logo keeps popping up. Technical difficulties?

Why did we do that onsite kick and give them 7 more points?

Because it's preseason. Just try things out.

I doubt the Ravens cared all that much about this game so neither do I. This isn't indicative at all as to how the season will go.

We got absolutely man-handled in the trenches on both sides. The offensive line is somewhat forgivable given the injuries, but the d line has no excuse.

Jimmy isn't 100% from what I have seen and our depth isn't any better at CB. Still a precarious position and likely a bugaboo all season.

Pass rush doesn't seem like its going to help mask the deficiencies either

People were so glad to get something for Ngata that they didn't even realize how much attention he accounts for and it seems like we are going to pay for it with our usually stingy run defense

^^^^^ This. Schaub plays like a terrible 3rd or 4th string QB. Just sloppy and embarrassing. Still to this day I dont understand why we paid millions for him. Its like people forgot he got BENCHED BY THE RAIDERS before he came here.

Actually, when our "1st string" offense was on the field we played great running the ball. But Flacco's throws were just awful. You can say that for some of them he was under pressure, but there were also some passes where he had time but lobbed 5 yards over the receivers head. Flacco played terrible tonight flat out.

Ngata is one of those players no one appreciates until he's gone. Jernigan williams and carl davis loom like good players, but between losing Ngata and McPhee the front took a big big loas.
