Pre-Season Game 1 vs Saints- The Good and the Not so good,

154 posts in this topic

I would call Allen a mixed bag. He had his moments. At least be fair to the guy. Lol.

Agree, too early to call him bad. He needs to work on his vision it seems... Is Carl Davis ok I remember him being looked at by the trainers?

I hope LT doesn't have a fumbling problem. When you drag so many players it's easy for other defenders to tug at the ball. Sometimes it's good to just go down.

Considering the fact that we only saved $750k releasing Jacoby Jones, looking at the return game last night, he might have been worth keeping.

Good - entire first team offense, Carl Davis, Maxx, Boyle, A Brown, Z. Smith, and Campanaro

Bad - Butler (gave Schaub an interception that shouldn't have happened had he done his job), MLB's as a whole in coverage, and second team o-line)

Ugly- Pass coverage in general on second and third team units. (have to know down and distance), and pass rush

Came away impressed with Arthur Brown he showed his speed and explosiveness. He should get more playing time. Carl Davis is a beast in training. Z. Smith will take some time but I see a little McPhee in him. Our first team o-line looked great. Campanaro looked really good. Waller looked better than a prospect. I think he needs some work but gives this team a tall deep threat with hands. Buck Allen I think can be a great back but he had no opportunities with how bad the second and third team o-line looked. When we get Urshel back it should look a lot better. Robert Myers should help that second unit as well.

I really like our depth though as a whole.

If Jenson and Reid keep that up, we have the deepest OL in our history. Very impressed with both...

Lorenzo looked great. Expect him to play a major role this season at the goal line.

Juice is going to eat this season....So is Camp.

Maxx should've had a TD but it's OK. He made up for it.

The options we have on offense is tremendous....We can attack in so many different ways. It's really all a matter of gameplanning, executing and staying healthy.... From the top down, this team has "It". Even though it's only the first preseason game, I loved what I saw and can barely contain excitement.

my players of the game: lawrence guy, zach orr, eugene mornoe (although didnt play that much), taliaferro looked like a starting nfl running back, jah and ryan did some pretty good work especially jah, zadarius art and nick perry had a few good plays, and carl davis looked really impressive working next to lawrence... Players that dissapointed: klm-looked at times god awful, anthony levine and the backup secondary, buck didnt do that well but i doubt neither other rb's would against the second string line compared to the first, darren people will hang on to but couldnt even execute catching the screen pass (if people watched the combine, they would know he was the worst reciever invited) 63 on the o-line didnt look that good (i think clausell is his last name)... overall i like trestmans offense. Its clear that the fullback will be used judging by tonight... i like lining some tight ends out wide... first team looked great... WE have the best strating o-line in the nfl... would really like to see robert myers and urschel who had an excellent game against new england against vince wilfork last year... ricky stumbled out of the gate but finished the drive off strong... overall we look really good,,, would love to see the players who were inactive tonight get a go at it to see how we would look like at full strength... P.S. brennan bryer i thought looked pretty decent tonight.. i think he should definatly at least make the 75 cut

you kidding me? zach orr played awful

Tom Nelson. For being a converted safety, he looks like a polished receiver. I know we are log jammed at wideout, but I'd like to see him get some 1st team reps

yeeeah wont happen. you wont hear the guys name after a couple preseason games.

I wonder if Jacoby's release was as more about clearing slots for new blood in the WR corps than it was about saving money.

Feels good to be back.

Carl Davis impressed me, seriously. I don't know how but for some reason these great D-Linemen always fall to us in the Draft.

Maxx was a bit up and down but that didn't concern me at all, it's expected from a rookie TE, for now I really like the way he's progressing. TE is a bit of a trick for rookies and many of them don't make a high impact from Day-1, for now I think Gilmore is the guy at TE who'll start and get more reps. Speaking of Gilmore, I'm really liking what I'm seeing from him. He's dominated the TE spot in training camp and right now he looks like he has a lot of confidence. He's not a YAC guy, but he can be vicious over the middle and in places where there are mismatches. He looks totally awesome right now. Za'Darius Smith has potential, man that guy can be a huge piece of our defense for years to come if he continues to refine our game. He was doing well pass-rush wise, but he just has to focus on finishing, that was something that was a negative in college so I hope he can fix that up, and knowing his high-motor, determination and strong work ethic, I know he will.

Now the bad...The 2nd team defense did not look good at all, it was concerning to say the least and I'm a bit worried on Asa's spot on this team right now. He wasn't that great in PR duties and no one was impressed with his coverage.

Overall, it was a good debut but I'm looking forward to the next game. Philly has a good pass rush so it will be a good test for our offensive line.

I didn't want to lose Jacoby anyway...  As goofy as he was, he was a great return guy.

He was living off the 2012 season, he was terrible in the past two years, taking out kickoffs and not getting to the 20 and he looked considerably slower, plus he offers very little as a receiver.

I think we didn't want to keep a guy around who was a coin flip receiver and was primarily a ST KRS who didn't always return that hot in a league slowly moving away from roster spots dedicated to return specialists.

I think Arthur Brown played really well. In my opinion he outplayed McClellan and Orr for that back up spot. Judging by that one game.

Reading OLinemen seems to come natural to him and he explodes through a gap once he notices run. He is not the best against the pass, but he was solid I think. But concerning Pass Coverage Orr and McClellan couldn't do it for their lives

Here's my take on the bad: If our starting secondary run into injury issues we are in deep doo doo.

Just like last year.

He outplayed Mclellan. Orr was all over the place.

Also, Jacoby had a great 2013. It probably would have been better had he not been injured week one.

I don't think Jacoby Jones was terrible in 2013.. He missed  four games in 2013 but by the time he came back he still made some game changing plays on special teams and even made some splashes on offense.. He also could have had his best year receiver yards wise  if he didn't play in only 12 games . I think 2014 was Jacoby Jones only  bad year as a Raven but he still was a well respected kick returner especially since he averaged about 30 yards per kick return.

Funny thing is when you turn on his tape at USC the thing that stands out to you the most is his vision. I think he just had some first game jitters at the beginning and was going through a feeling out process. By the time he settled in the starting OL was out and nobody was running well behind the 2nd string OL. The one time they did give Buck a lane he made a nice cut and got upfield.

After watching what Allen is capable of I think that 1st game was just a warm up for him. I expect him to have a breakout game before preseason is over.

Definitely think that's a big reason why. Jacoby was pretty useless at WR last year and in today's NFL you can't have a roster spot reserved for someone to just be a return specialist. Even his return game was nothing spectacular last year. I thought the writing was on the wall fairly early on that Jacoby would not be back. His time here was great and he gave us plenty of amazing memories but the magic was wearing thin and it just felt like the time was right to go our separate ways.

It's funny that many people have visions of rookies coming in and unseating 2nd year guys from their slot.. but then we quickly see that one year of experience actually means a lot. LT just had a look like he'd been there before and Allen did not.

The one guy I really had hopes for making a difference early on was Perriman ... which is why his absence due to injury is a bit unsettling. For all the love we want to give the other WRs, there is no one that has a real ability to stretch the field. I really hope he can be on the practice field this week and on the field for PS game 2.

Arguably 13 was his best year as s deceiver but he took a significant step back in 14. I think he's sorely missed. But I think there aren't many game changing kick returners anywhere in the league... Name one...

In addition to clearing slots, I thought it was also about poor decision making; too often JJ ran kicks out of the end zone (and ended up shy of the 20) when he should have taken a knee leaving Joe with a long field.

Good:

Very impressed with our Tight Ends. I love them all. Gilmore is a stud, Max Williams wants contact. I'm a little worried about that. His style of play is extremely physical. Hopefully he's well glued. I love Boyle too. What a beastie boy. An area of concern looks to have turned into a great strength. Nice job, F.O.

Our quarterback situation is maybe the best in the League. Flacco was sharp and made good decisions. His ball was whistling, but we've come to expect that.  Would like to see him air a couple out next week.  Schaub was serviceable. He made a couple of great throws. He's not very mobile and took some heat at times and that disrupted his rhythm.  Renner looked like a valuable player. Not sure where he went to college, but liked what I saw.

Receivers, Campanero looked like he's a keeper. It's gonna be about injury with him. But he can play.  We got a peak at how disruptive Waller is for a defense. Hopefully he continues to grow with our system. Really looking forward to Perriman's debut.  If he's as effective as we believe, this core with S.Smith and our Tight End situation sets us up well.

Running Back:  We didn't run them silly, but we were effective. Liked all of backs. Juice looks powerful this year.

The Bad

To put it bluntly, our second string defense wasn't very good. Defensive Line, Corners, Safety and Linebackers.  Right now, not sure which are going to step forward. We've got a good 1st team, but not sure how deep we really are.

Returners....egads Jacoby Jones wasn't stellar last year, but as of right now we are gonna miss him.

Safety, the more I see the more worried I become.

Corner, Jimmy and Webby better return to full form. Very concerned there as well.

It was only one practice game but there was good and bad.  Let's hope we see improvement vs. the Eagles.

I saw Orr get beat a bit in coverage, he got better in the second half but the first half in coverage wasn't too pretty from what I saw
