Pre-Season Game 1 vs Saints- The Good and the Not so good,

154 posts in this topic

Nick Easton running with the 3's held his own on a pretty terrible group. Made some good decisions switching blocks.

Jah Reid did impress me with the 2's. Like most people here, I'm not a big fan of his but he played well this game at RT, maybe he'll get his stuff together and realize his potential.

Asa looked good fielding punts...up until he got injured again. But seriously he looks dangerous fielding punts.

LT has stepped up pretty well.

Butler did fine. The pick was more Schaub's fault than his, it was poorly thrown. Had he made that catch falling backwards early in the game we would be saying great things about him.

1st team D looked fantastic the 2 drives they were out there, granted it was against McCown it was still very good.

Arthur Brown was a mixed bag, made a couple good plays but also missed a few. Orr is in the same boat.

Trawick did very badly in my opinion. That taunting penalty really made me mad, so unnecessary. Hope Perry gets more snaps next game.

Rookies:

Williams did fantastic, that 4th and 20 was supremely impressive.

Carl Davis did great, absolutely manhandled whoever they put in front of him. Very disruptive.

Z Smith was a mixed bad, struggled mightily early but as the game went on he did better culminating in the sack

Allen did good, like Z. Smith he didn't do well early but did better after a couple snaps he did better.

Walker was impressive, wasn't expecting him to shine like he did. Doesn't shy away from contact and i odon't remember him making any bonehead plays.

Boyle made some good catches, very strong hands. Wish he would get more after the catch but can't complain about his performance.

Waller made a nice contested catch early, then did a good job drawing contact. Nothing overly impressive but i can't complain about his day.

u got that right about trawick i really route for him but he really let me down tonight... didnt look at easton too much but when i did he was doing his job the tackles on that third string looked awful though

I was proud of my boy Renner tonight~ that was a lot of pressure for a rookie QB and he stood tall. Go get 'em Bryn!

Renner is a second year guy but still

Tough night for TE Allen Reisner.  He is undergoing surgery on a break of his leg above upper ankle.  Prayin' for ya man!

Any word on Asa's knee?

Anyone know why Jimmy didn't play? If he was hurt, what's the injury?

Mink and Downing said they were just holding him out since he didn't need to show anything in a preseason game, so I think it was just precautionary.

Given our starters only played a series--and it still went for a TD--I feel a little disconcerted that the WR's were barely involved. Seemed like the balls only went to the TE's and RB's other than a short crossing route to Smitty. Hope to see some more production out of them next game

our offense looked like Kansas Cities lol. But our offense is always up and down, especially in the preseason. May have a clunker of a first series next week. Just the nature of the beast

We have only one proven WR, an ageing Steve Smith. It's not that surprising, that we won't field a high flying offense this season, unless Perriman makes an impact on the team like a Mike Evans or OBJ did last year. Lets see, if BP even sees the field week one of the regular season.

Here's the 4th and 20 for anyone who missed it. Don't know how you could say he looks slow, that's about the same speed guys like Gronk and Witten run. At 6'4 he covers a lot more ground than you think and he's a tough tackle for anyone in the secondary.

Thought Nelson(WR?) did phenomenal. I don't even know his first name, but the guy got open and made plays.

Camp also another guy that knew how to get open and played v.well.

I thought Aiken was pretty quiet yesterday. He took alot of snaps. Even on 3wideout he was easily covered up.

Impressed by Renner, Carl Davis, Tray Walker , Taliferro ,  and Z- Smith

Buck Allen looked bad and so did the majority of the safety group.

Quite a few mixed bags. Namely Schuab and Pointer

buck looked like a case of nerves, had 2 or 3 bad runs to start out, dropped an easy pass, and then the coach intervened and put him on blast, after that he looked darn good

Jensen and Reid looked impressive for backups. Art Brown and Zach Orr had their moments. But most of all, Carl Davis is a monster.

i also thought the line looked good, but then later on when reid was still playing and against bubble guys, reid was a turnstile at moments along with the rest of the line, it was strange how reid was playing solid vs 2nd and 3rd stringers but then practice squad players wore him out.

Thank god football is back. I had to remind myself at the end that it was only a preseason, but overall it was a good game.

My thoughts on the team are that Treastman picked up where Gary left off. I think that even if the scheme has been tweaked, you can tell we are transitioning into more of a pass friendly unit. I think Taliaferro is a great compliment to Forsett and was impressed with his strength. WR's looked better than advertised, atleast with the ones I was interested in...Camp & Waller. I think these two have a future in Baltimore. Aiken, Butler, and Carter struggled but a lot can change over the rest of preseason. TE's looked good and Maxx is a beast. Gronk ability to dominate but a bit sluggish. QB's looked like studs...even if Shaub forgets what team he plays for...some throws were perfect.

SSS, BP, Marlon Brown, Campanero, Aiken, Waller

Deffense...I'm not really sure what happend here. Number one's played well but after that...what happend..? Dean Pees has some work to do. Carl Davis and Zach Orr played great.

Maxx Williams was a mixed bag. He made one big play, and he guy definitely runs with some power. However, he looked slower than Gilmore out there. Even on his big play he seemed kinda slow. So far, Boyle seems to be the better of the two rookie tight ends.

early on maxx got some reps vs the starters, mixed assignments, and he looked very good. showed better blocking strength than i expected and was very fluid on some intermediate crossing routes that were never thrown his way. i thought he looked real solid but him not bringing down that TD was disappointing to say the least, thats supposed to be the kind of thing that makes his money, he is lauded for making incredible catches seem routine.

Impressed that Renner was able to come back from that INT to win the game.

Missed some throws and some poor decisions but tough to get an accurate gauge on him with how poor the line was protecting him.

Oh and Carl Davis looks like he could be an absolute beast. Williams, Jernigan and Davis could make a great dline for years to come.

And the effort by Maxx on that 4th down was amazing. Great stuff.

--

The 1st team offense and defense looked awesome. Couldn't have done any better really.

Completely understand why some draftniks had Carl Davis as a late first round pick.  He was great last night.

Other highlights.  Maxx Williams was clutch.  Boyle, LT, Juice, Flacco, Camp, Z Smith, Renner, Tray Walker, The entire first team offense and defense looked great.

also, according to that clip posted, does anyone think maxx may have been hurt on that play? he limped off the field favoring his right side, and if you look at the slow mo replay, you can see his right ankle torqued at a strange angle as he hits the ground.. any word on it?

I believe it is Tom Nelson, the converted Safety.

I think Asa is bye bye this year.

Flacco looked sharp.

Talifero is a big strong dude.

Davis is a monster.

Smith #90 had his moments applied a lot of pressure at times but couldn't get to qb.

Waller is going to be a gem.

Arthur Brown looked good at times and has good speed.

Our O will be amazing this year!

finally someone else pointed it out! i feel like so many are just saying "he couldnt set the edge he didnt play very well blabla"

well, setting the edge is a very refined skill, i doubt any rookie will know how to do it in their very first preseason game.

and not getting the sack doesnt explain his night, i thought i saw tons of potential from him and i think he is going to be very special, as in a perennial double digit sack guy by year 3, unless his development gets completely stonewalled right here(practically impossible) then i dont know how you can frown on his performance just because he didnt fully capitalize.

Thought all three tight ends looked good. Was not impressed with Renner overall...unsettled in the pocket...limited arm strength and inaccurate.

Second and third team defense struggled with just about everything. Very sloppy and undisciplined.

If Perriman is legit, this offense will be fun. Campanaro is the guy I like best out of all of our WR.

herbs has his injury list but won't speak on it until today.

Tom Nelson. For being a converted safety, he looks like a polished receiver. I know we are log jammed at wideout, but I'd like to see him get some 1st team reps
