[News] Late For Work 8/11: Remember What Happened Last Time A Player Retired Like This?

56 posts in this topic

As soon as I heard SSS announce his retirement, I (along with probably all of Baltimore) had an immediate association with Ray's retirement and the magical ride to the Super Bowl victory. I do think every player is going to dig a little deeper and personally challenge themselves to go way above and beyond to send SSS out in a blaze of glory, hoisting the Lombardi.

Not a gambling man but I was shocked to see the variance in numbers... what would the payout be?

First thing first, Steve Smith has been a blessing to this team for one reason amongst other obvious ones: He has shown Harbs that you absolutely need that gritty alpha dog on your team to win.

Now my main issue (and I've pounded this table several times before): Why isn't Billick in the Ring of Honor?! Make no mistake  about it; that "Play like a Raven" thing Harbaugh talks about... it was Billick that forged what "Ravens' Style" is. Brian Billick turned a start-up franchise that might have been like the Texans or Jaguars or restart Browns today into a perennial powerhouse rubbing shoulders and butting heads with much older and storied franchises like the Steelers, Patriots, and Packers, and looking better over their existence than other big teams like the Cowboys and 49ERs.

Much as I am aware of his flaws: he couldn't develop a QB (wasted the best years of Ray Lewis' career), and he was always the smartest guy in the room (by his estimation), I have to admit that Brian Billick is the Ravens' equivalent of Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry-- he set the standard of excellence that has become the benchmark for the Baltimore Ravens. Put that man in the Ring of Honor already!

Anybody that thinks the Steelers have a better chance of winning the AFC is living in lala land! I am willing to bet that the Steelers finish with an 8-8 season at best or 6-10 season at worst this year.

i remember Dee Mase played for 4 different teams...titans 7-8 years, ravens 5 years, texans/jets 1 year. he said although his glory years were with the titans, we are a world class organization from top to bottom...and he retired a raven...i wonder would steve do the same if he got a ring this year

Steve keeps it pretty real, no doubt he appreciates the Ravens way of doing things, but i'm sure he appreciates the Panthers for giving him his first 13 years to establish himself as a top notch WR in this league....

I posted this earlier, but ROH talk brings it back up. Another former Raven WR has numbers like that. Not as much as SSS or Brown, but close. The best WR in Ravens history, Derrick Mason. Career: 943 Rec., 12,061 Yrds., 66 TD, 5,086 Ret. Yrds. I think he is HOF material, but he is definitely Ring Of Honor material, and the fact that he hasn't been inducted yet is ridiculous and embarrassing. Ravens Numbers: 471 Rec., 5,777 Yrds., 29 TD. He played 6 years for us, had 4 1,000 yard years (the other 2 were 802 and 750). Not to mention he helped Flacco develop in his early years. Catching TDs in the playoffs with a separated shoulder, the Master of the comeback route, Derricks Mason.

"Waller, a rookie sixth-round NFL draft pick whos not exactly known as a speed merchant, smoked cornerback Lardarius Webb on a deep sideline route that saw Waller get a few steps on Webb before Webb pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury"

So it Webb hurt?

Well...Waller ran a 4.40 at the combines, so not exactly slow, that is what made him rare, his 6'6 height to go with 4.40 speed......

The Colts would be a terrible bet. Last year, they won an easy division, beat an injury depleted Bengals team, led by Andy Dalton, then beat a broken down Peyton Manning who couldn't get anything on his throws, then got embarrassed by the only healthy team they faced, showing that they didn't belong there. I'm not sure they fixed their defense, and Luck turned it over a lot last year when asked to carry the team. We have a much better defense, a much better run game, a much better postseason qb, and if our young WRs/TEs can make a quick impact, our offense could be at least as good as theirs overall. Yet their odds are 3.25/1 and ours are 11/1? That shows you how brainwashed people are by media hype.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but if anyone is playing HARDER and practicing MORE INTENSELY or STUDYING MORE FILM since Smith is retiring, then we have a problem here. One would think, with the money they make and the small window they are offered to win the Super Bowl, that everyone should have been all in before Smith announced his retirement.

billick in the ring of honor? no way! yes, he was at the helm for the first super bowl win for the ravens. that was thanks to coaches and players. billick was a suppose to be a an offensive guru. he was failure in that regard. look at all the awesome qb he tried to build a team with. his ego was more of a hindrance than anything. if it wasn't for players like stark, boulware, the multiple lewis's, ogden and even mcalister the fan base may have alienated him. who gets rid of a super bowl winning qb? a qb that got an offense to gel enough to destroy giants. that's right, billick does.

geez, marvin lewis deserves the ring of honor more than billick does.

Are these SB odds updated after the Suisham injury? Losing a starting kicker the last week of camp is worth a couple hundred points on the spread, particularly in the AFC North.

your exactly right- but something about a guy like that going out gives the team as a whole this spark and hardcore motivation. I wish he would have waited until right before the postseason to announce it- but who am I to question SSS ? Edited by January J

flacco in the hall of fame...sounds nice. with all the playoff appearances and the only current player with the possible chance to break the nfl iron man record, that should be enough. the problem lies in the fact that there are so many qb's playing right now that might cause flacco to be overlooked. another variable might be a qb like eli manning or philip rivers.

eli has two super bowls but they were won with fluke plays being involved. but every drive to the big game requires a bit of luck. does he deserve a hall bid? if he does not, flacco chances may be damaged. flacco is a better qb than eli. eli's gift is he had and has have more talent surrounding him in the wideout positions. along with luck i had mentioned. flacco has had receivers that dropped the ball. eli has receivers that have made catches that can't be reasoned in key moments. some might argue flacco may have experienced luck with jacoby in denver. i believe the play was made from denver underestimated the arm of flacco. form that one play players and coaches took flacco more seriously like they may have never had.

how about rivers? does he get in? if he does flacco is a shoe in. i don't think rivers should. he has stats but he seem detrimental at times. maybe it was the way the chargers get coach? i don't know. i have seen is that when the pressure is on phillips can't win. sure he can win in a final drive in the regular season. but football in recent years has become like other sports in that the real season is in the playoffs. rivers has proven he can't. kinda similar to a another favorite nfl qb named romo.

should flacco make it through and get elected into the hall, it maybe years. his road to the hall will similar to andre reed or chris carter. it may take former teammates that have become television analyst to lobby for him.

I am hoping that's all it is. Some people are brushing it off as a cover up for getting beat, others are reporting it as a real injury.  Either way it doesn't seem like a serious injury.

Like you said Waller ran a 4.40, and Webb ran a 4.35.  With such close time I would think any kind of slow down by Webb would result in Waller beating him.  Maybe he got a bad jump, maybe practices are catching up to him.  I don't know, but hopefully he staus healthy and continues to play well
