[News] Late For Work 8/3: Two WRs Standing Out Among 12-Man Competition

40 posts in this topic

Despite initial reassurances that some reported tweaks and bruises aren't serious, I am concerned for the potential seriousness for each and every minor injury. The tweak or bruise could actually be more significant than originally thought or open the door for a significant injury if they go back out there too soon. Not worth the risk. I am in 100% agreement that the staff take the ultra-conservative approach and sit players out and hope a tweak remains just a tweak. The ultra cautious approach will help us get through camp as healthy as possible. Every initial non serious injury report makes me a little nervous.

Is it too early to paint my face purple and run around screaming "Ravens!" or should I wait until the first preseason game? LOL, FOOTBALL!!! Man I missed you! GO RAVENS!

I agree w/ you 100% on this.  We already have 1 DB more than likely gone for the season and 2 with minor injuries.  Not to jinx us, but this is how we started last training camp, with the injuries to the DBs.

Not to mention Perriman, coach initially said he could be back as early as the next day and now we're hearing he'll probably miss a week total. I'm all for letting players heal but like you I get nervous everytime I read the the camp report for the day.

“Aiken made difficult grabs on two Matt Schaub passes that sailed behind him while running across the middle.” That's why Matt is here ... to identify the WRs that can catch errant passes b/c Joe's are on target and everyone catches them.

12 WR in camp, and IMO 9 to 10 have a legit shot at making the team....I think Nelson, Carter, and Steelman don't make the cut, but one might make the PS....Any of the others might find their way onto IR, as i don't see any of the others clearing waivers....

For rookies, even 1st round picks, any day missed from training camp is crucial. Here's hoping Perriman makes it back sooner rather than later.

I made a bad judgment call before when I said I wasn't sure about Jernigan & Williams replacing Ngata. But after watching a game from last season (vs pats in playoffs), Jernigan and Williams are actually very good. The determination and tenacity that them both play with is crazy.

Perriman's case reminds me suspiciously closely to some previous cases where an injury was called nothing serious at first then ended up making the player miss weeks.

Perriman's injury was first (that day) called "nothing". Then, te other day "nothing serious". The next day Harbaugh called it "a bruise", still emphasizing that it's totally insignificant and Perriman may come back any time. And the very next day - yesterday - Harbaug said it was "a sprain... or a bruise.. .a tendon... that kind of thing".

That's how "nothing" turns, in three days, into a possible sprain. Am I the only one who finds it hard to believe that the Ravens medical staff needs 3 days to diagnose - or rule out - a sprain?

Well... let's hope Perriman won't be the next Lee Evans or Webb who were first reported to be out for no more than a day or two - and then went on missing weeks...

As for strong safety depth... as far as i know, Bernard Pollard is available...

I'm not at all convinced he would be willing to come even close to Baltimore after how he felt when he was released - and even more that he would probably only be a backup for Will Hill, not a starter - but at lest he's available and we all know what he can do.

When healthy campanaro is the ultimate slot/return man for any team. He has to stay healthy but going all the way back to his days in college he has never played an entire season. Even with all the missed time at Wake Forest this guy is still 6th in ACC college history in receptions. So I think if we can find a way to keep this guy healthy he could be a 3rd down machine due to his route running skills.

[T]he fact that there had been a competition means that the Ravens were not 100% sold on Will Hill as the starter for a reason,” Stevens wrote.

Pardon me??? By that logic, the Ravens are not 100% sold on Flacco, Tucker, Koch, Suggs, Dumervil, Forsett or Steve Smith - for one time or another they all had - or have - "competition" at their positions...

I'm afraid Mr. Stevens doesn't really get the ideas of "depth" and "constant competition" - and thinks the fact that a team has a definite starter at a certain position means the organization is not out there to try and find an even better one...

On the matter of Will Hill... I firmly believed that he was brought in firmly because the Ravens aren't sold on Elam as a starter... They are giving Elam every opportunity to develop into the player they seen on tape.. Hill is better in coverage... little bit more physical.. at this point a better tackler IMO... his downside has been his off the field stuff... he has to prove that he can stay out of trouble before he is offered a multi year deal.. Glad that the WR's are making plays... let's hope that this trend continues into the regular season... if we can run the ball and still air it out...that will help the defense out so much... it forces teams to either try to grind the clock out by running and throwing a lot of short quick passes... or get aggressive to match the Ravens firepower... so excited to see what the team looks like Aug 13th can't get here fast enough

"Also, punt returners did drill where they caught with multiple footballs in their hands. Asa Jackson caught 1 while holding 5 in his arms"

Wow - return THAT back for a TD - it's 36 points at once :D

I would think they brought in Will Hill because they had some shortage at S, and Hill was a rather low risk - potentially very high reward move.

When I saw he was cut by the Giants, I immediately thought how good a move it would be to bring him in on the cheap - but never thought it would actually happen... Then it did :)

Hate to see Players get injured , but it is inevitable. "Next Man Up".... That's how it works. Hopefully Elam can heal, rehab and be back in the mix for next Season.

It appears that we may even be a better team with more depth this year, than we were in 2014. Keep making progress with Trestman's schemes and make this a dynamic Offense and a tough Scoring Defense.

Let's Keep 'Em Healthy !

With a loaded wide receiver corps seems to me that Tom Nelson would stand a better chance making the team if he switched back to safety which was his natural position.

Re: WR's - I'd like to see Perriman out in tonight's open practice, but even knee contusions/bruises are tricky at times. I once had a knee bruise that bled internally (not serious) sough that I had "bruising" around my ankle the next day from the blood "pooling" there. It's great that Camp is stretching. Most injuries like he's been having are due to inflexibilithy. He's my odds on fav for replacing Sr. as well as being the PR specialist. I like what I saw from him when he played. Maybe now we'll see him play more often. It's good to hear good reports about Waller for a change. Hensley made him seem like a practice squad candidate this year. Steelman might wang to try out for back-up QB again with all the great talen we have trying out for WR. I'd like to see him play, but he just might end up cut.

Re: DL - Jernigan might end up being a beast for us, but he just doesn't have Ngata's girth. Ngata was special because he moved so well for his size (40lbs heavier than Timmy). Davis could end up being more like Ngata being 320 now with plenty of lean frame to add more bulk.

If Jerrigan can make Yanda, the best lineman in the league, look bad I can't wait to see what he does to the rest of the NFL this season

I'd say wait until you see guys in the preseason for yourself to make an opinion on who is separating themselves or not. Much of the success written about Aiken and Butler in this article came against 2nd and 3rd unit DBs. No knock to them because you can only perform against the person lined up across from you but i still wouldn't get too hyped until at least preseason. But i will say it's a good thing that Aiken, Butler and even Camp are taking full advantage of Brown, Smitty and Perriman being out. With those 3 being out i would hope that Aiken, Brown and Camp could separate themselves from the likes of D. Brown, Robinson,Carter, Waller, Steelman and Nelson. I honsetly think this article is a bit premature, especially considering it came out after just one day of full contact.

This WR Core is so Deep. Injuries will only allow other guys to shine. Flacco and Trestman are just cheesing for the regular season to start.

The Jernigan news doesn't shock me one bit. I thought during the Haloti Ngata suspension, Timmy brought more to the table for us because of his ability to penetrate the backfield and get after QB's. We were racking up sacks during that time as a team and allowing less yards per carry. I can't wait to see a full year from him. He has that fast twitch ability that you can't find in guys over 300lbs. Not saying that he is Warren Sapp, but his style of play is similar.
