[News] Safety Matt Elam Injures Biceps, John Harbaugh Not Optimistic

77 posts in this topic

I wanted Pollard when the Titans released him, and got negged pretty bad, but i'm telling you, he brings the nasty.....

I don't see Harbaugh and Ozzie bringing Pollard back because I believe he was a big part of that "Mutiny" stuff. Not a great locker room guy.

Well, there you have it. Our first serious injury. We're still doing better than last year but poor Elam. I had high hopes for him this year. He's been working on his game and looked to have matured over the off season that I had hoped he would break out this season.

I'm curious to know, how many teams actually make it to their first game without losing any players for the season and if there are any, how many times do they make it to the playoffs? I think if you don't lose any players, your camps may be a bit soft.

He would have been nice depth to have, esp since he had a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. But maybe this is the final straw telling us to be done with this guy.

This sucks, he has potential talent to be a top strong safety if he has indeed tightened up some of his weak spots, but this could derail his hopes of ever proving he is the guy for the job. Oh well, wish him the best and let's see where this goes. GO RAVENS!

I feel bad for the guy. It sounds like he really wanted to make his move. As John said, he had grown up and wanted to go to the next level. We have given guys like Jah Reid the benefit of the doubt, we should do the same for Elam. I hope he's able to recover. If for no other reason than to provide depth. Maybe by playoff time.

Hang in there Matt. This doesn't mean the end of your career at all.

Actually this gives Perry from Alabama more reps and a shot at making the team...Has good size as well, i think he is over 6 ft...

Bad news. We all know how critical this year was for Elam. He just Had to show something after pretty much stinking up the place the last two seasons. Well, let me withdraw that, Really. I mean, he Was being played out of his natural position. Yeah, he definitely under achieved, especially for a 1st rd choice, albeit a ver low 1st rounder. But, there's no denying that this was the year he was being looked at to turn things around. I never did think he was going to beat out Will Hill for the starting job, but I Was hoping for much improved play from him so that he could be quality depth. Unfortunately, it doesn't look that will happen now. Tough break, Matt. I feel bad for you.

I am not a Elam fan, but I do feel badly for him being injured even before the first preseason game is played. Competition as a rule makes everyone better, or at least makes you give a sincere effort. Possible he could return, Ray did it. How determined is he?

I'm a Ravens fan, therefore i am a Elam fan as long as he is on our team....Hope he recovers and gets another shot at competing next year for a spot. Even if Hill has a stout year and we sign him long term, a good camp next year for Elam, could get us a draft pick, or a trade down the road....:)

It was a bust from the beginning. Pay him and cut him loose.

Cutting a player while on the IR makes little to no sense.

I don't know why John lets these guys go out and beat the crap out of themselves. It proves nothing. There warm ups and safety must be crap.

Disappointing news for sure because I really wanted to see an improved Matt Elam. This just goes to show you that a football career can never be certain so if you are going to go for it, you need to go at it with everything you've got. You never know when a serious injury will rob you of playing time and who knows how Elam will bounce back. If he struggles when he comes back from this injury he will be left with some nagging thoughts about whether he really gave it his all and if he could have been better. Saying that he needed to take himself "to the next level" tells me that he was sort of taking things for granted. That he was already good enough to be here. The NFL is a different monster than college ball. Of course, this could be a great thing for him. He could take it like a lot of other players do as a wake up call. Rehab that injury, bust his tail when he's healthy to stay in shape, and even though he can't step on a field and play, he can have his butt in the film room and his nose in the playbook. Get well soon Matt!

Matt Who? Guess he should have done more in the last two years.

Accurate but a little cold and callous. I think it could have been phrased a little different. However, this should be a lesson to every first round pick who thinks he has it made. He got his payday and immediately thought about how he was going to make money when his career ended so he took his first off season and played sales boy at a shoe store instead of taking every possible opportunity to practice and hone his craft. The lesson is if you focus your resources on what you are doing after football instead of developing those football skills, the sooner you will be selling sneakers to kids as a has-been, or never was. Never waste the time you have now thinking you can show up tomorrow because sometimes, tomorrow never comes. Elam may have fired his last shot as a Raven.

I don't think Harbaugh is really that disappointed. He couldn't even remember who the injured were at the presser yesterday.
