[News] Late For Work 7/31: Peter King Declares Ravens Super Bowl Contenders

41 posts in this topic

Great quote from Harbaugh summing up the 2014 season, "I'm pissed but I'm proud." Are we Super Bowl contenders this year? Absolutely. All of the rookies and new players also need to understand exactly what Harbaugh feels and means. The 2015 mantra mindset should be, "GET PISSED. STAY PISSED. PLAY PISSED." If that's the attitude, the Ravens have great odds in walking away with the Lombardi this year.

My banner flying across Steelers practice would be "Ravens towels are better than Steelers towels" with a huge oversize Ravens towel flying on the end.

"It got me wondering whether Ravens fans would ever to go to such lengths. And if you would pony up the cash, what would your message above Steelers camp be?"

I'm going out on a limb here and well aware I'm risking raking up a nice number of negs - I'd say it wouldn't happen with the Ravens/steelers, or if it did, the message would be something radically different. Why? Because, at the heart of every truly great and long lasting rivalry, there is a huge deal of mutual respect. You can't feel you're in a rivalry with an opponent you can't respect. And, to be honest, I don't remember the steelers ever extending any kind of cheating or foul play on the organizational level... So, a heated rivalry, for sure. But a lotof respect, too. With the pats? Heated battles - for sure. Respect? Well... There would be a lot to respect about the pats as an organization, but it's real hard when they're doing these kinds of things...

Of course, that means important but brittle pieces like Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb must stay upright at cornerback for Baltimore.”

Its never a good thing for a football player when "brittle" is an adjective used to describe you!

So what's the excuse now? Lombardi asked. On the heels of some of the worst secondary play in team history, Webb led everyone to believe he was healthy and that his physical wellness would propel him to have a great 2015 training camp which would eventually produce results in the coming season. Well so much for that optimism. The Ravens are counting on Webb to make a statement this season. So far the statement reads: I'm not ready! And now some will ponder, Will he ever be?

Lombardi is an idiot. I really really despise that guy....

Great article....lots of tib-bits. It's funny the Jets thing. Maybe their fans should fly a banner over the Jets field saying...." learn how to play NFL football". Remember the Jets coach that blew the whistle on the Patriots. He apologized and of course has been out of football for years. They are losers and should be looking in the mirror.

I would like to say I hope this whole team is pissed off this coming season, Cause for the first time if I can remember, no one picked us to go far at anytime. So now people please call us the Pissed off Ravens lol.

Actually mostly everything I've read during the off-season had the Ravens as one of the top teams in the AFC this year.  Along w/ the Pats, Colts, and Den.

I would agree for the most part with the exception of Tomlin walking on the field when Jacoby was about to return a TD.

But I have respect for our "Enemy" and I think they are a very worthy opponent.

I'll support a loser before I support a cheater every day of the week.

I hope the defense, specifically the secondary gets the same message.

I'd like to see Tony Lombardi even attempt Harbs' conditioning test. And Webb passed it this morning, so not even a "blip" on his '15 season as far as I'm concerned.

I doubt Ravens or Steelers fans would troll to that level, largely because 90% of the time there is a mutual respect not only from the teams but the fan bases as well from my experiences. Can't say the same for the Pats and Jets on the subject.

Reporters for the most part can get away with belittling players/people with impunity, something ordinary people in real life likely would not get away with. Sad to see a of lack of respect by a lot of reporters who are not smart enough to understand a great reporter can get the point across clearly without using words that degrades players/people. I come from the days of Al Sanders, Jerry Turner, Bob Turk who takes pride in reporting news without resorting to degrading people. I remember the days where editors would get angry at reporters when they show a lack of class. I miss those days when we can just read the news as is and think for ourselves instead of reporters openly degrading people.

As usual Sarah Ellison has to include the Steelers on every LFW article. I wonder if the Steelers do the same with us? Doubt it.

The other day someone commented about the LFW articles digging for material and said he hoped the season would soon start. I replied saying that just wait for training camp to start and we will get some great articles and sure enough Sarah doesn't disappoint. My Steelers banner would say "quit bragging about 4 SB's U had nothing to do with" Except it would take a 747 to pull that statement but if I had the money, that's what I would say.

Sounds like Carter isnt so popular anymore..any word on Waller?

I really hope we keep Waller around, even on practice squad if he does not make the 53 to better prepare him in our future/next year's plans. Physical physique is not the question as he has across the board measurements to be really good. I think the Ravens can help him get better through fundamentals and honing his skills at the NFL level with patience. I think it would be a mistake to let him go so soon after the draft. Hopefully they will find a way to keep him and guide him along.

Why wouldn't we be SB contenders? We had half our team out last year and still almost knocked off the SB champs, even thought they cheated. The odds that we'll have 5 players at one position go on IR again are extremely slim. We have 18 of 22 starters returning, we added playmakers, upgraded our biggest weakness, and we're going into our second year of our successful offensive system, but with an OC with a history of being more aggressive, and anyone who watches our offense knows that the more aggressive we are, the better.

Just love this rookie class! Perriman, Williams, Davis, Zadarius, Boyle, Buck Allen, etc. Most of them will make this class one of the very best in Ravens lore!

I understand how these things work, but this LFW is pretty much copy and pasted from MMQBs column. Diversify your sources a little next time?

They kept Tommy Streeter around for a while.  I don't seem them getting rid of a guy that was a higher draft pick and seems to have more talent.  Waller's problem is, he is still raw.   When he got to college he was a safety but after he continued to grow taller they switched him to receiver.

As a fan I would like to see them make room for 7 receivers and keep him, but i think there is a good posibility they will put him on IR and stash him away for next season.  Last season they seemed to do the same thing Butler and there have been nothing but rave reviews about him.

You're probably right Waller will be kept on IR. Hopefully he will break out next year like Butler did.
