[News] Ravens Waive Cam Worthy, Add Another Receiver

47 posts in this topic

I'd have rather seen us bring in Cooley. Not sure how high a converted safety will climb the depth carts. Meanwhile, there's a more than capable tight end who's itching to prove he can hack it. Which he probably could...and add depth at a sketchy position.

what would be the thinking of cutting a true WR in favor of a Safety converted to WR?

Versatility? That's my guess.

Must be a confidence builder for the rookie DBs and #2 &3's. Unless they going back to the time of two-way players, I can;t see how this guy gets a shot.

Because he injured his foot in OTA's and Nelson is "healthy"

Hey IMO, this guy is hungry to prove he can play receiver - which is two fold; he will push himself and thus push the other receivers in camp.

So Saturday is the first practice with pads & contact. I'm nervously waiting to see whose names will come up on the injury list after that practice ends...

Cam Worthy will end up on our practice squad probably. This guy might have value as a K/P returner. I seriously doubt if he makes the team.

More than likely Just another healthy camp body. We'll see if he can manage to become more than that but it's doubtful. I too wouldn't mind bringin in Cooley for depth.

Hmm.. very perplexing move especially considering the depth at WR. So, unless he has return ability or is a special teams ace, it beats me.

Nothing to see here.

They swapped out one player who won't make the 53 man roster for another player who won't make the 53 man roster.

Don't need to read too much more into this.

Im sure Cam will be brought back and placed on IR. He was signed to a 3 year deal so cutting him saves a few dollars but I'm sure the coaches want to keep him around. As for the guy added by Ozzie who knows. This guy could be an ST ace that comes out of nowhere and makes a name. Or he could just be a camp body that has potential but they don't see much

Agreed, seems we always see at least one move a year that has us fans wondering lol

This is a move that has a lot of components flying underneath the radar. The Ravens love versatility, and they love special teams. They may indeed be trying to make him a receiver, but he can also play emergency safety if needed. And the guy knows how to tackle, so he could contribute to the ST at the very least. Or.... the guy doesn't make it beyond first round of cuts.

Conversion from safety to WR isn't unprecedented or all that rare. Just recently there was a very successful conversion by the Detroit Lions former safety turned wideout Mike Furrey. As a FS in 2006 he recorded 48 total tackles, 4 picks of which one he ran back 67 yards for a score. The very next season as a starting WR he led the team in receptions with 98 (which also led the NFC), was second to Roy Williams in yardage with 1,086, and was second in receiving TD to Roy Williams with 6.

The next season Detroit brought in Shaun McDonald and was Calvin Johnson's rookie year. His receptions dropped to 61 and yardage dropped to 684 yards and only 1 TD. Nobody had 1,000 yards for the team that season. Furrey also turned 30 and it was the start of the downward trend for him until he retired after 2009.

But on to Nelson. A guy that was a safety converting to WR most definitely rings special teams player to me. He's got a lot of serious competition ahead of him on the depth chart so the only way he makes the roster is if he is on the coverage squads.

We swap out players who never play for us all the time throughout the year. Theoretically, the guy has a chance to make the roster in some sort of role, but its the equivalent to me of swapping out a 3rd string QB for another 3rd string QB. We know there's nothing of note going on there.

My general rule of thumb... if you're substituting one guy you've never heard of for another guy you've never heard of anytime between July-August, chances are you still won't know that guys name by September, because he won't be on the active roster.

This is where I was saying that a veteran signing would have made a little more sense. Reggie Wayne.... say ... if some of the younger guys are going to loss some reps why not to a proven guy like Reggie Wayne? Nelson is not only an unproven player but an unproven WR. Bringing in a veteran like Wayne is not guaranteeing that he will make the roster but raising the level of competition in camp for sure. Only difference is that Wayne will not contribute on ST where that would need to be NElsons niche. IDK... I think an old crafty veteran like Wayne would have brought more to camp then say Nelson but non the less... I hope Nelson proves me wrong! GOod luck guy.. here is your chance!

Atleast it's good for morale. Not saying that's why they brought him in but thats something good that can come from it. Boost the other receivers confidence a bit since there is so much talk about ppl being on the bubble and how most of them are equal in talent and fighting their way up the depth chart it will be a relief to see another receiver that's under them for once.
