[News] Late For Work 7/27: Projecting Ravens 53-Man Roster, Starting Lineup

Predicting the 53-man roster weeks before Ozzie's prime hunting season even begins is like a never sharpened pencil: totally pointless.

You could of just said "..begins is totally pointless".  Nice try though lol

You won't be disappointed if you sign Rice for a one year deal; he is a change man and a very good football player. Just give the man a chance!.....

I'll be disappointed for two reasons...

1. I honestly can't tell you a single reason why he would make this team better in 2015.

2. We aren't going to carry 4 RBs, so somebody will have to decide why Rice is more valuable to this team than Taliaferro, Forsett or Buck Allen. Good luck with that.

Nice phrasing, Bio.  Your simile is doubly true.  Get the point?

Everything that I'm hearing about Waller right now is PRECISELY what I heard years ago about a Tommy Streeter.

They're both tall, fast, raw route runners, but I can see at least one significant difference between the two. Waller has more than 20 lbs on Streeter(in his rookie year), and he apparently knows how to use that to his advantage. Scouting reports say Waller shows great body control and uses his body to get position on smaller defenders. One report said that back shoulder passes were "nearly indefensible" with Waller, and I also read that he is tough to bring down after the catch.

I'd be surprised if Waller gets a lot of playing time this year, but it's way too early to suggest he doesn't have enough potential to be worth keeping. If the Ravens saw another Tommy Streeter, they wouldn't have drafted him in the first place.

Tyson has "proved" he can play effectively in the league. While Urban? Unless he tears it up in camp and preseason...back to the practice squad.

At WR Michael Campanaro is a feel good story but he can't stay on the field. Aldrick Robinson gives them a another "deep" threat if Breshad Perriman twists an ankle or stubs his toe.

I am on board with everything Hensley is saying about the 53 roster except Tyson and Toussant, it may end up that way, but I wish we could find a way to keep them....especially Tyson, the dude is a beast! GO RAVENS!

The one area that Baltimore would like to upgrade is at the No. 3 quarterback spot - Hensley. Considering we haven't carried a #3 QB for a while now, I think not.

Ravens will carry 7 WR: Perriman, SSS, Aiken, Brown, Butler, Waller, Carter. Campanaro is hurt to much and Carter is way better and twice as good in route running and speed. Just because he is from Baltimore don't cry who ever thinks I'm wrong. I want a championship. No way Waller makes it to the practice squad. He is perfect for short yardage goal line pass touchdown. He is a going to be a beast this year.

Based on what? Their 40 times were virtually identical, and Camp showed the ability to get open and make tough catches last year at an NFL level. Carter has never done that. He reportedly struggled to get open in mini camp once the veterans showed up.

The injury concerns with Campanaro are legit, but it makes no sense to say that a guy who wasn't drafted, hasn't ever played an NFL snap, and struggled in a no contact mini camp is twice as good as someone who has proven he has all the skills necessary to get it done at the highest level.

Waller is big enough to be a TE. There is no way they are cutting him with that size and speed. He is one of those planet players, not too many players with that size and speed and 245 on the planet.

Thank God Jamison Hensley is not selecting the roster. No Waller, Means, KLM, Tyson, Vaughn, Carter, Jacobs?? I love Canty, Suggs, and Smith but hate to see good young players get cut to keep guys who are on their last leg.

"Good" being debatable of course. I think our coaching staff and FO has certainly earned the right to determine who's good and who's not.

Seems that a lot of ppl are sleeping on butler just bc he is the Least popular. I'm pretty sure he wants to play the slot too, so it may be him over camp if camp can't stay healthy. Although camp is a KR so that's a plus for him. They may keep both, but no way whatsoever we keep both carter and camp on the active 53. I'm on the fence about Waller. My gut tells me he will make the team, but my brain says otherwise. He's just extremely raw and compared to Atleast 6 other receivers he's the least talented at this point. We will see if we decide to keep 7, if so he will be the last receiver.

I also am not sure about means, I haven't seen or heard enough about him to determine whether I think he'll make the team, but hearing the expectations that Ozzie had before OTA's tells me that he is high on him. Time will tell. Football is so close I can smell it.

IMO you got the offense about right except they keep Waller and release Campanaro (he only stays if he stays healthy AND if he wins the returner job).

On defense however it will look more like this:

8 DL........Williams,Jernigan, KLM, Urban, Canty, Tyson, Guy and Davis.

8 LBs.......Upshaw, Suggs, Means, Dumervil, Mosely, D.Smith, Z.Smith and Brown.

6 Corners...Smith, Webb, Arrington, Vaughn, Walker, and Jackson. I think they released Melvin.

4 safeties..Hill, Lewis, Brooks and Elam.

Of course injuries can change this but guys like Reid, McClelland Levine and Trawick will be casualties to the increase in talent we acquired this off season. I'm assuming Levine won't beat out Elam but I guess that could happen. Melvin will get a spot if one of the DL or corners goes down with an injury which seems to happen every year.

There are very few spots up for grabs on this years team. They are deep and talented all across the board. Should be a very good year if everybody stays healthy.

Rice DOES deserve another chance, He has been forgiven by his wife, went to counciling, been kicked out of the league for a year, lost millions in endorsements etc. etc.

all along while many players did Much worse with much less penalty!

ESPN keeps talking about Brown and how good he is gonna be for the Steelers. Can't wait to see him line up against Jimmy Smith this year.

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Waller & Carter make it. Waller because of his size and Carter for his punt return potential.

Quite possibly he won't. They move Brown around a lot, and he plays in the slot quite often. Jimmy isn't coming down in the slot to cover him, because Brown would probably eat him alive there.

Jimmy will almost certainly stay on the outside, probably lining up with Martavis Bryant more than Brown. We will get to see plenty of Jimmy against AJ Green and Dwayne Bowe, though.

I'd cut Arthur Brown to keep Tyson or KLM. They traded up to draft Brown and he hasn't done a thing. And everyone is foaming at the mouth about Waller, but at this point he's just Tommy Streeter 2.0.

Heck I'll let Canty go to make sure DeAngelo Tyson is on the squad.

I like Canty but that is probably the one change I would also make to the 53 man roster also. I would have chose KLM but that injury was pretty bad.

I was referring in general; I know the Ravens cut ties with him so there's zero chance he's coming back, but other NFL teams should give this man a chance.....

But other NFL teams are probably doing the exact same analysis... how does he make their football team better?

You'd be hard pressed to name a single NFL team where Ray Rice would be an upgrade over their current #1 RB, and in many cases, teams have 2 or 3 RBs who are probably better/cheaper/have more upside than him.

So, for me, its quite simple... is the value of RR as basically a complementary or #2 RB on any NFL team worth the public scrutiny (and there will be some) that comes with bringing him in?

Right now, the answer is no. I mean heck, Chris Johnson is a FA right now, and he probably has much left in the tank as Ray Rice does, and with basically zero of the associated baggage. Why take Rice over him?
