NHL Expansion - what do you think?

8 posts in this topic

Lately, there has been talk of NHL expansion - mostly due to the Arizona Coyotes getting nervy to find a new arena deal, and also due to Las Vegas building a new arena - Quebec City, too, for that matter.

Other sites which may be of interest are Milwaukee, Seattle, Portland (Oregon), Kansas City, Houston and even - long shot here - Madison (Wisconsin).

I would like to hear from all of you as to where you think a good site to relocate or expand to may be.

Only reason I'd support expansion is if Baltimore built a new arena which would mean the minors would have expand too.  Only rumors I've heard was either a Racetrack that would replace Pimlico in Port Covington which would also have a indoor facility or Kevin Plank bought some land near Westport which is close to the light rail and I 95.  The people who run Royal Farms have the usual propaganda that hockey wouldn't work, well not with that facility.

Seattle would be an interesting one. Quebec City is a for sure in my books and should have an easy time re-establishing just as the Jets did...if they do they better keep the Nordiques name and logo. It would also be cool to see another team in Canada where there has not been one--Somewhere in the maritimes like Halifax or another Prairie team in Saskatchewan would likely have rabid fan bases, however both are likely long shots.

Yeah, Dubs - I'll admit to Saskatchewan being a longshot, as the only city I can think of in that province is Saskatoon.

Which reminds me - back in 1983, Saskatoon came close to having the St. Louis Blues relocate to their city, provided the NHL would approve of the sale of the club by its then-owner, Ralston Purina.  The Board of Governors turned the sale down flat, so the Blues onwership responded by boycotting that year's Entry Draft.  Dumb move.

Back around 1981 or so, the Washington Capitals were slated to move to Regina, Saskatwan, or Seattle, WA or New Jersey.   Abe Pollin was losing money and decide to keep the team if a few promises were kept, the first 10 home games would have to sellout, and the amusement tax would have to be changed.  The sellouts were helped by business buying the unsold seats which kept them in DC and then the trade where Ryan Walter went to Montreal in exchange for Craig Laughlin and Rod Langway

A team in Milwaukee makes perfect sense, there are a lot of Hockey fans in Wisconsin. I'm totally against any South Western cities getting a team..plus Texas already has the Stars. Not big on Las Vegas either.

Seattle would be cool,

I really wish Baltimore would work, but it won't.

I would be all for Quebec getting another team, or for the return of the Hartford Whailers!

Ah, Hartford - I loved the Whalers; Quebec City is also a pleasurable choice.
