Ravens fans ranked 4th best

54 posts in this topic

NFL.com posted an article about a study done by Emory University where they tried to identify which teams have the best fan bases.

You can read the article here: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000501025/article/study-cowboys-fans-best-in-nfl-dolphins-worst

They took into account things like fan attendance, spending on fan gear, etc....

Because total spending is a part of the equation it is obviously slanted toward big market, affluent area, highly commercialized teams... Hence the Cowboys being rated #1.

We come in at #4 with the others in the top 5 being: New England, Giants and Jets. All with much higher population and bigger markets. Considering that, ranking #4 is a pretty cool accomplishment.

So give yourself a pat on the back for contributing to our ranking. We blew away Steelers fans!

So what are your thoughts? Is it an accurate portrayal of fan bases according to your experience at away games or talking with fans of other teams?

What about the study itself... Do you think it factors in the right criteria for evaluating fan bases?

+> I can't beleve that study... Give us two more surveys from other NCAA Division 3 university studies, then I may concur.

Just goes to show how loyal us ravens fans are. We have one of the smallest population cities and we dont travel too well bjt we're still in top 5. Feels good to be a ravens fan every day.

You're wrong about us not travelling well. There is a huge contingent of Ravens fans at every away game. I know first hand from going to many myself. Ravens fans travel extremely well.

If folks don't believe we travel well, they need to come down here to FL...  The Tampa fans were just in AWE last year.  The were peeved that their stadium looked like M&T...Same with The Phins...

I saw that the Dolphins ranked dead last.

It's kinda neat to be ranked in the top 5. I met fans from many different teams as I am sure most people on these boards have as well. Most of the fans I know have some sort of passion when it comes to their team even Raider fans. I am just curious how they weeded out the band wagon jumpers from the study. I have friends who are die-hard Patriot, Steeler, Raider, Chiefs, Browns, Seahawks and  Packer fans all good people and very loyal to their team they have stuck with their team when they did good and when they played horrible they never blinked and stayed loyal. However I know people who seem to change teams every season it's these so-called fans I am talking about when I say how did the study weed them out?

Which is why it's like being at M & T Bank every time we play in Miami lol. For some reason I think for as storied of a history the Dolphins have, if they were to move and relocate, Miami wouldn't miss them at all.

Ravens fans have a different bond to their team compared to most teams. Its hard to really say what it is, but it's there. I think a lot of it stems from having Ozzie as day 1 GM. We're one of the most consistent teams over the last 20 years now, and Ozzie's decisions are rarely questioned.

That is extremely impressive when you consider we are small market like others have pointed out. Steelers ranking 14th was surprising, they're fans in Pennsylvania are die hard like we are but their "fans" around the country almost always have no ties to Pittsburgh and are just bandwagoners.

Exactly what I was saying. Teams like Cowboys, Steelers etc travel alot more than we do because alot of them are bandwagoners.

The Ravens Fan Club from Raleigh did a bus trip to Tampa .. so they were part of that contingent.

I was there too.  It was my husband's first Live Ravens game.  He loved it.  And it was a hot one.  But it was awesome.  There is an Orlando Ravens Flock, and a Tampa Ravens Flock here.

I told him, "if you think this is great, you should actually go to M&T.  I think he may this year.

Which I don't really get.  There are a ton of Dolphins fans here in Melbourne.  Must be like the Rays and such.  Everybody here in FL is originally from somewhere else... and they root root root for their home team.

Yea it seems to me that if they broke this down on a per capita, or per fan, basis that we'd blow the competition away.

When you factor in the size of the other markets in the top 5 and the amount of bandwagon fans each of those teams has around the country, were at a huge disadvantage for a study like this. Us going toe-to-toe with them tells me that our average fan is twice the fan of any other team in terms of commitment of resources invested in the team.

Proud to be a member of this Flock. #1 home field advantage in all of sports and now this recognition - just confirms what I already knew. Factoring in FO, coaching staff, team and fans... baltimore is THE best football town in the country. Probably because we know what it's like to have a great team and then lose it. We don't take it for granted...

Down in the DC area, the Ravens might be the second most popular NFL team.  I used to belong to a Ravens Nest that folded 8 years ago in Bowie due to charter violations.  There are two bars, Mason Inn in Glover Park and Rock Bottom in Ballston Commons in Arlington near the Metro.   The reason they're aren't more is virtually all the games are televised in the area on local TV and most fans would rather watch at home.

man we've had a shocking number of accolades this offseason:

-#1 team going into 2015

-#1 home field

-Top 3 head coach

-Top 5 fan base

I thought the Ravens get no respect? :)

Thats just what most like to think or pretend when another team gets 16 prime time games in a season and we only get 15.

i wouldnt say loyal, i would say fanatic as opposed to just fans.

cant claim loyalty until that loyalty is tested.

we'll see how the fans respond when the flacco era comes to a close and we face a few years of mediocrity/cellar dwelling. ive develloped an emotional bond with this team, i couldnt imagine ever a time where im not itching for some ravens football and even if were guaranteed to lose ill still watch with passion, but the way i hear so many ravens fans talk about the team, i dont know if we could expect the same from them
