Positions that need addressing in 2016 Draft

105 posts in this topic

the obvious answer here would be OLB, but ozzie loves to surprise us, sometimes he'll address the same positions 2 years in a row, sometimes he stacks up one side of the ball 2 years in a row, sometimes he'll draft at our most stacked position, etc etc.

for the first 2 rounds, i could see oz surprising some of us. after drafting a WR in the first, all it takes is a big decline from smitty, or to have the rest of the bubble wr's fail to make an impression, if marlon brown, kamar aiken, butler, waller and carter all show that they cant handle a #1, 2 or 3 role, i would not be surprised. a guy like travin dural or corey robinson could be worth consideration.

also, if matt elam continues to dig himself deeper, if kendrick lewis doesnt fill the role we are expecting, if terrence brooks struggles to return from injury, or if will hill gets a fat contract elsewhere, safety could be another position being targeted. if landon collins slid to round 2, ramsey could take a tumble as well, although its unlikely, that boys a beast. su'a cravens looks like the real deal as well and he is currently projected to be in the late first round, looks like a great fit for this team.

shawn oakman, unless he has a ridiculous season and shows pro readiness, could be a strong consideration, canty is on his last legs, urban is a big fat unknown, as is carl davis, and oakman could be a good fit to play DE in 3-4, and can play both inside and out in our 4-3 packages, he would be another piece to the puzzle in our reloading phase and we would essentially be replacing journeyman with an incredibly high ceiling prospect, it also is no secret that we could use some length in our front, our linemen are mostly shorter and stockier guys, having a guy with stupid long reach and a physically imposing build would add some variety to our attack.

there are also tons of cb's in the late first round range, cameron sutten, kendall fuller, etc.

i havent looked into offensive linemen yet, so if any draft geeks around here could point out an interior linemen who could take over for KO or yanda when they inevitably leave, or an OT prospect to help us move on from monroe one day, that would be appreciated!

would not be surprise If the ravens take another wide receiver in the first round next year.

like you said

Travin Dural from LSU

Laquan Treadwell OLD miss

Rashad Higgins Colorado state

Duke Williams from Auburn

Josh Doctson TCU

Corey Robinson Notre dame

a lot of choices here.

i feel treadwell is gonna be out of reach, i dont like duke williams at all, he strikes me as another kelvin benjamin(who i think will decline and eventually be considered a bust unless he learns how to use his hands).

i however, LOVE dural and corey robinson, dural has very well rounded ability, and robinson looks the part of a #1 receiver, solid athleticism, great size and reach, and very good ball skills, i havent done lots of digging yet but im sure ill find something that explains his currently low projection of late first/early second.

overall i think either of them would be great fits, depends on whether perriman shows he can be a true #1 or if he is a complementary piece. i think if perriman shows to be a true #1 then dural is our best bet, as i believe his speed and separation abilities would give us a wr corps similar to the packers of their SB days, but if perriman proves to be a deep threat and cant work the whole field, then i think robinson would be the better bet to use his frame/speed/ballskills combination to work the whole field

Not a first round WR (could be later) but Michael Thomas is a guy I really like. Love his physicality and having a possession guy opposite Permian in the future will be big. His playing style seems to be in the mood of TO, Dez, Keyshawn, etc. as said before all depends how guys like marlon and Aiken pan out.

Cant say I have looked into too many players for next year but on name value alone on the OL I am interested in Nick Martin as a C/G (Zack Martins brother) and Mike Matthews C (Jake Matthews brother).

The safety and secondary classes have been a little underwhelming recently but next years looks to be a good one so far so I really do hope we get someone. I really wanted Eric Murray to come out last year..he does not seem to get a lot of hype in Minnesota but is a big, physical and smart corner I would love to see us get.

yeah the safety class next year appears to be the best one in years. i could see similar hype as the 2013 safety class with vaccaro, reid, elam, cyprien, and swearinger, except some of these guys might actually live up to the hype, jalen ramsey REALLY looks like the real deal, that boy is impressive.

also, zack martins brother? draft him, first round, no questions please just do it. lol

OLB, WR, CB, S

I'd like us to draft another back up QB. I'm sure there are spots on the DL that will be addressed in anticipation for people leaving the next year.

with the way the teams future and this roster is panning out, i honestly wouldnt mind seeing us draft a qb in the 2nd round if the potential is there, maybe not in the 2016 draft but 2017. if there is a derek carr caliber guy in the 2nd round where were picking, id be all for it. i think by next offseason we will have a pretty stable roster with alot of long term talent locked in, a 2nd round pick assigned to the bench for a few years wouldnt hurt, although i think joe is here for another 8 years or more, still would be a nice piece to have a competent young qb on a cheap contract in case something bad were ever to happen, considering all the money we have tied up in qb's we would want competent play if the starter were to go down.

Guys who can fill the voids

1) DT Maliek Collins - Nebraska (this guy is really special, best part is he's a wrestler who went 48-0 in HS)

2) OLB Dadi Nicolas - Vir Tech (definition of natural pass rushing ability)

3) WR Corey Robinson - Notre Dame (6'5")

4) OLB/ILB Terrance Smith - FSU (Versatile, plays special teams but I want to see more rushing this year)

5) CB Zach Sanchez - Oklahoma (Size, ball-skills and most importantly tackling, also started across from our very own Julian Wilson)

I'm a really big fan of Murray and he disappointed me by going back. It was probably a good move for him, though.

I think oakmen might be just out of reach

it depends on his upcoming season, as of now hes a late first/early second project guy.

if he receives his offseason coaching well then he will be out of reach, all he needs to do is show refinement in his game and he will fly up boards.

No mention of Mills from LSU as a safety?

mills strikes me as a nickel corner in the nfl, im not saying he couldnt play safety but i think it would waste his talents, he could be the best nickel cb in the league but i think he'd be just average as a safety.

but then again i havent watched extensive film on anyone yet and im just going off of highlights, he just looks like hes more natural in man coverage and jumping routes rather than patrolling deep and run support.

I think cornerback will a priority. The group is still completely dependant on Jimmy Smith's health. Another corner than can step up and play well in Jimmy's absence (should he get injured again) would be great. Also, a guard or center would make sense, due to Yanda's contract and Zuttah being pretty average as a center. Urschel can fill in for one of them, but getting another young lineman would be smart.

That is why I said Spencer Drango because he can play guard and might slip to us because of medical concerns

KO has back issues as well and its reared its ugly head on us a few times, that may be something that the ravens steer clear of in the first round because back injuries are just really problematic for offensive linemen, also if he is healthy throughout his whole final season, he will be drafted high as a OT and i would be surprised if he plays G past his rookie season. seems like a all around no for the ravens, i would like to see a guy like that on the team though, we will need another OT sooner rather than later, along with a G, and with the OL being a strength on this team id hate to see the tailspin we would go into without a strong line

Receiver will probably be our biggest need heading into the 2016 draft. Steve Smith will probably retire, and that leaves a 2nd year Perriman to be a #1 receiver. All depends on how this year plays out, though. A guy like Marlon Brown or Kamar Aiken could shine.

Im betting on CB. WR, is a maybe but if I had to put in a bet I'd certainly say CB given how lower Webb's dead money would be.

Back to back first round receivers would be interesting, but I only see it happening if a really talented one fell to the Ravens for whatever reason (injury, dirty drug test, etc).

well, ive been touting these 2 names a bit, but if the ravens were enamored enough with perriman, i think dural and robinson would enamor them even more. but yea it seems like a long shot, there are just guys that legitimately could fit the mold and be available

It just depends on how things shake out with who falls.  The draft isn't grocery shopping.

it may not be "we must address this position in round 1!" but we often do end up addressing major needs in the first 2 rounds with the best player available in a wide range of positions, even if the need isnt a well known and dire need.

I dunno if the Ravens take another WR in the first, but I'd never rule it out. It all looks good on paper, but Aiken will be an RFA next year, IIRC. Brown will be in the final year of his rookie deal as well. Steve Smith Sr is likely to ride into the sunset at the end of this year. That leaves you with Perriman, Waller(if he makes it this year), Campanaro, and I guess Butler or Carter if they stick.

WR could quickly turn ugly, so I'd never rule out any position before the year begins. You never know what the season shows. WR is certainly possible in the first if we like the guy enough.
