[News] The Competition: Tight Ends

36 posts in this topic

Yeah I'm more excited about seeing what the tight ends can do this year over almost everything else. And that's not even including pitta In the picture. At this point if he makes it back that's just a bonus. Really interested to see how trestman utilizes all of these guys. Also excited to see more dump offs just to mix things up. Screens to not only Forsett and buck but perriman and Maxx as well.

I can't imagine keeping a fullback(that fumbles, low production) over any of these tight ends.....lets see....6-5...260....6-3....255...(no DLorLB wants to see these guys blocking for our RB'S)They would make waayyyyyy better fullbacks than what we have at that position.....

I expect the Ravens to keep 4 tight ends, and a fifth on the practice squad. Pitta, Gilmore, Williams and Boyle.....Riesner on the PS. They will keep Juice as the only Full Back. Thats where I stand on this right now. obviously its early and things can happen, but I think the 2 rookies look really, really good.

I'm looking forward to seeing more 2x TE sets this season, last season it was really just Owen Daniels out there due to Pitta's injury and Gillmore being a rookie, but now that we've stocked up at TE, I want to see more TE's getting in on the action..... remember.... Joe loves his TE's.

@Bohica5 I still want to keep Juice though he got so much versal as a player. Don't give up on Juice just because he fumble one or two times he will get better.

Did anyone else notice that most of the articles about the TEs during; rookie camp, OTA's and mini-camp spoke very highly of Boyle and not much was said about M. Williams?

It's tough to be a lead blocker from the TE position... our running game is often predicated on the lead blocker so I don't think Juice is in competition for a roster spot with any of these guys.

I'm all in for Pitta but let's hope he adopts the old saying that "discretion is the better part of valor" That type of injury is quite serious and it wasn't a pretty sight when he collapsed on the field without being touched. He owes it not only to himself but his family to not have to live the rest of his life with a debilitating disability. He's a special talent that made this poster ecstatic when they drafted him. Watched him at BYU and knew he was hands down better then Dickson, who they took in the same round. But enough is enough and he should move on with the rest of his life.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a big Pitta fan. That being said, after seeing that hip dislocate a second time(with no contact). Pitta's football career is a long shot at best. Willing to play or not. Taking two tight ends in the draft doesn't say much for the front office's confidence either. Gilmore and Williams are our future at tight end, and I'm ok with that.

I just hope Pitta can come back and be a real force for us but I am very happy with our other options Gillmore, Williams and Boyle. Boyle was a surprise for me when he was drafted but he looked pretty good during OTA's. Williams looks really good and Gillmore sounds like he is ready to go too.

I hope they take it easy on them in training camp. During the season those TE get the crap beat out of them.

It is hard to evaluate the rookies until the pads come on. Ed Dickson looked great until he took a few shots and developed alligator arms. He could make spectacular catches in space, but in traffic he was clearly concerned about protecting his body first. Last year Gillmore showed he liked to hit and run over people and let's hope he continues this year. If the newbies don't have the mental toughness, the physical abilities will not matter.

You guys need to chill with the depressing and negative comments about Pitta's injury. Saying he needs to move on from football and that his career is over is not helping, I think he knows that already, damn have some faith that he'll be okay and can make a comeback, he has a hip injury.....not cancer, stop ruling him out. And IMHO, I don't think his hip fully recovered properly the firt time which is why he went down so easily, I actually had a similar experience and understand what can happen when you don't recover properly and  rush injuries. He doesn't have to be ready the first game of the season, but mark my words, Pitta will be the starter by the end of the season.

Honestly I don't see why the coaches shouldn't just go ahead with Gilmore as our starting TE. He brings fresh legs and a much meaner and tougher presence to the offense.

I thought this was Dennis' choice? Sheesh.

Reisland and Rueland are never mentioned. The next two months may reveal one of them to compete against Boyle. We all have to remember that Maxx is a college sophmore who can be a later season player and not necessarily a  must play now second round draft pick.

The problem is roster spots. "If" Pitta comes back, Gilmore, Maxx and quite possibly Boyle have a spot.

How many TE's can the Ravens carry?

every TE on the roster is skilled and talented enough to be a pro bowler I'll trust the coaches on who will start. I'm sure under trestman running two tight end sets with Gilmore and Williams in the rotation is going to be awesome. If o-line can keep the pressure off flacco he will pick defenses apart. Gilmore- 515 yrds 5 td's... Williams- 625 yrds 8 td's.

it looks to be Gilmore and Williams with perhaps Boyle getting some reps as the blocking in certain packages Pitta will start on the pup list. both Trestmen's offence is TE friendly and Flacco loves the going to them. this year TE draft signals that perhaps it is over for Pitta that saddens me cus Pitta is a or was all pro and Flacco's blankly and dear friend I might add. remember Pitta went down and no one touched him I saw it in 2010 when the ravens drafted two TE that was the end of Heap different scenario same results what do you guys think on this help me out.

Exactly...Boyle will have his heat coming on from the two players I mentioned.

Perhaps the IR/PUP list is intended for Dennis. I am a huge Pitta fan and will not state he is done.

Maxx is in because he is a future starting TE  and was a great draft steal.  Harbs and Oz have to escort him through his first year...
