Timmy Jernigan and the D-line

10 posts in this topic

I just read a nice article and analysis by Kevin Patra of NFL.com on Timmy Jernigan's potential to make up for Ngata's loss. A very nice film study and I'll tell you, this guy is an absolute beast! If he can stay healthy, he is almost unstoppable in his penetration ability. Our pass rush is alive and well on the interior. If he can be a good run stopper by shedding heavier O-linemen, watch out!

Paired with Brandon Williams and Chris Canty on the line bookended by Suggs and Doom, our pass rush will be stout as will our run defense.

Here is the link to the article and share your thoughts on our front 7 potential:

to your standards, who on this team will NOT be a pro bowler? first youre saying gilmore is going to be the next gronk. now jernigan is going to be a pro bowler in just 2 years. settle down man lol.

As much as I hate seeing Ngata not retire a Raven, I'm confident that we'll continue to see the same level of dominance (if not more) by our young D-Linemen.  I have a real good feeling about this team.

I don't know about the next Gronk, lol but I can see Gilmore being one of the top TE's in the league. Jernigan IS something special too. He could easily be a pro bowler. We have a rediculously good team this year.

Be cool man !!!!!!!!

I would rather read stuff like this rather than much of the negative crap that floats around this site.

Jernigan is going to play well as a pass rusher.  He's got too much speed for interior lineman and his hands are too powerful for finesse tackles.  Yes he'll lose battles here and there, but overall, expect him to do well as a pass rusher.

He's being questioned on the run stopping side but I keep reading that he's pretty decent there also.  So long as he stays healthy and doesn't let the season wear him out (fatigue), he'll be a very good player for us

Solid article. Our D-Line will be dominant this season with the group we have right now. Jernigan and Williams should be starters, and really anchor the line. I'm excited about those guys moving forward. However, with quality of depth we have, it won't be all on their shoulders.

The key will be having a rotation that keeps guys fresh, and also throws different looks out there. Urban, Tyson, KLM, Guy, Carl Davis, Canty .. Those guys can all provide some different abilities. Upshaw even got some reps at DE last year, which gives the line a totally different dynamic.

If we're creative with our personnel, and our young guys continue to progress, this D-Line will be a nightmare for every team we play.

The crazy thing is, if there's a knock on Jernigan it's usually his ability to play the run.

Among players at his position, PFF had him ranked 10th against the run with a +10.something. And that was with about only 1/3 as many snaps as almost everyone ahead of him.

He was 2nd to only JJ Watt I believe in pass rush productivity.

I don't want to heap too much expectation on the kid, but man does he look good. As much as I love Ngata it's going to be nice to have someone that can routinely get into the back field and bring pressure.

Our pass rush struggled against the QBs that can get the ball out quick like Tom Brady did in the 2nd half of the playoff game... Because there just isn't enough time for the OLB's to get there. It basically neutralizes Suggs and doom.

The only way to get there quickly enough is up the middle. Jernigan is the answer. Williams will eat up blockers while Jernigan slices his way into the backfield. The way he uses his hands to just bully and push around bigger interior lineman is just a thing of beauty. And that was him as a rookie.

The more time he gets to work with Coach Brooks, the more dangerous this kid is going to be.
