Late For Work 6/29, Suggs era coming to an end?

*since the writers are vacationing this week, figured it be cool to continue in their absence *

Add a paragraph or different topic to keep it going.

For those who missed it, Terrel Suggs was his normal, witty and comedic self on the NFL version of Celebrity Family Feud that aired last night. However, a few weeks ago we didn't see that side of Sizzle during his mini-camp presser.  His subdued and calm interview left many analyst and fans wondering if this will be the last season with the Ravens.  Suggs didn't mask his feelings about a different "feel" in the locker room during mini-camp.  We're certain that has to do with his good friend Haloti Ngata leaving for Detroit and many other long time teammates leaving to play elsewhere or retriring (Reed & Lewis).  He calmly only talked about this season and stated "we'll see how it goes" when referencing the 2016 season. This is not the Suggs that we're accustomed to.

This is a first! Prior to this season Suggs wouldn't hesitate to let anyone know who was listening, that he came into the NFL at a young age and he was still relatively young from a football perspective. Now we're hearing, "I'm on the back nine" of my career.  Losing Lewis, Reed, and Ngata via trade, Suggs is the only remaining defensive player from the defense that we used

to love to watch.

Admittingly, I'm not ready for Suggs to retire this year or next.  He has the charisma and SWAG that this defense needs. But as a fan, I know and understand that EVERY player has to eventually retire, but my selfish nature doesn't want it to happen.

Best of luck to you Sizzle.

I think you nailed it on Sizzles' feelings of nostalgia. He and Haloti were the last of an era gone by, now the last familiar face he sees from the Billick-days is in the mirror.

Not that it's a bad thing, his best memories (IMO) have been since 2008, he's DPOY, won a SB, and made incredible plays. As he said in his presser, "it's weird" but I think he meant 'it's different'.

I think he's got a couple more years in him but, of course, it's up to him. Like he said, his '32' is different than someone elses. He's been in the league twice as long as Webb despite being only 3 years older. He's got 12 years of experience to Chris Canty's 10 - they're both 32. Daryl Smith is older than him but Suggs beats him in experience. That's incredible if you think about it.

Suggs has really had a perfect career. Would love to see him pad those stats over the next two years, get another ring, and waltz into the hall like his big brothers.

Suggs is definitely looking around that locker room these days and realizing how long he's been in the league for. He may be feeling his football mortality for the first time in his career, especially now that he's the last of the old guard.

Im not ready to see him leave or retire, he's got some solid years left if he wants it. I hope he can find some energy in being that last legendary Ravens defender, and mentor guys like Mosley to carry it forward.

Good post 757. It was definitely refreshin seein Suggs bein himself on family feud. I think when the season gets goin and he puts down Peyton a few good times he"ll snap back into sizzle mode and return to the Terrell Suggs that we all know and love.

Terrell was back to his old pumped up, feisty self last night on Family Feud. Whew. Stay feisty Terrell.

This is could be a long week for Ravens junkies with the staff writers on vacation. Hey, we need some folks to start more new threads to keep us out of withdrawal.

I was thinking about this topic the other day. I'm hoping that we can get some our young players to carry the torch and keep our physical identity. It's clear the Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Sizzle chapter is coming to a close.

It will be weird when Suggs hangs it up.

Here's another topic to chew on during this long week....

Will the ravens have a top 10 defense at stopping the run this year? The writer for the bengals doesn't think so:

Coley Harvey, Cincinnati Bengals: "No, the Ravens will not have a top-10 run defense this season. This will be a year of transition in that regard as Tim Jernigan starts adapting to life as the young up-and-comer in Baltimore’s line. He’ll get the Ravens back to those years of top-10, top-five rush defenses in time. But this season, it won’t happen. Besides, even with a healthy Ngata in 2012 and 2013, Baltimore didn’t have a top-10 rush defense either of those seasons. Nose tackle Brandon Williams figures to play a key role in the Ravens’ success against the run again, though. He ranked second among league tackles in Pro Football Focus’ run-stop percentage. Having to play seven games against six teams that were among the league’s top 15 rushing offenses last season won’t make matters easy for Baltimore this season, either." - espn.com. What you guys think? Will Jernigan and b.williams be able to carry the load? Who will be the guy to step up and become the clear cut leader of the front 7 in the absence of ngata ?

I just hope we keep the streak alive of not allowing a RB to rush for 100+ yards.

me too- that's a pretty impressive stat if you ask me. However it's gonna be difficult to do facing bell twice, beastmode, and possibly Todd gurley if he pans out. Oh yeah, forgot about Melvin Gordon and Jamaal charles. Edited by January J

It's weird to think that he's literally the last holdover from an era when defences could still straight murder dudes coming across the middle and it was a football play. Then the ab would refuse to throw over the backers again out of fear his wr wouldn't even bother. He's like a pre Internet era guy or something lol, the grandpa with stories of the old days.

How am I not surprised that it's a Bengals writer? To be fair, let's see what our front-4 can do without Ngata.

Can't remember if it was CBS or ESPN, but I remember seeing a stat showing that our run defense has never allowed 4.0 ypc in the history of our franchise. THAT'S amazing!

suggs came into the league at 19 or 20? not sure, but he was young, never had any injuries, and he had the benefit of having nfl trainers and nutritionists before he even grew a "mans body", so while having more mileage over most players his age, i still think that was a distinct advantage to be able to adapt his body to the NFL standards before his body was even developed. he also has stayed relatively healthy and aside from the achilles, the pectoral, and the small little nagging injuries, he has been as dependable as they come.

i think he is in that stage where he isnt happy with saying "ive won a DPOY, ive won a SB ring, im satisfied" i think he wants to truly chase greatness, meaning he wants to make himself a lock for canton, he knows there is one way to do that, to spearhead a defense that brings another super bowl ring or 2, he is just getting serious about it all, i dont think its a "lost" feeling since he is the remaining stalwart, i think its just a feeling of making a statement that he is for real and he wants greatness in his twilight years.

I'll go on a limb and say Suggs almost retired this offseason. Judging but his demeanor when he came back, and his weight gain he almost didn't come back. This could be his last year with us. He stayed with the same team his whole career, in almost the same position and same role.He had the most fun being the young goofy guy but he can't be that anymore, he's one of the old guys now. The game probably just isn't as fun as it used to be. All speculation though.

If his preparation looked a little off, maybe that is a sign he's close to closing up shop. Guys don't get tired of playing usually, they get tired of all the ridiculous things they have to do to get their body ready to play. I imagine all that stuff looks less and less enticing as the years go on. Plus with all the other guys gone maybe it's just less fun, who knows.

Hope we're all reading tea leaves tho, because it just wouldn't be the same watching games with him gone and his level of performance is still strong.

I wasn't surprised either , very typical. But it's whatever. And yeah I just read that the other day on espn too- that is wild.
