Dennis Pitta

I honestly thought it was a waste of a contract and I'm hoping the Ravens begin to take a more cautious approach with their loyalty.

With that said, I hope he's still able to function as a normal person and not someone who will need tons of support, like a wheelchair, hip replacements, etc.

Pitta is done. Sad, but that is NOT an injury to play with.

Our defense couldn't cover a guy who isn't even medically cleared. Sup Pees.

It was easily the worst contract we've given in the last 4 years, and that's saying something.

I was beside myself when I saw the numbers. Production aside, the dude was coming off a career threatening injury and played a grand total of four games.

To be fair I'm sure no one wanted to get any where near him when running down the field.

I want Pitta back, too. Sounds like everybody making the decision wants him back. Up to the doctors for the final "yes". Also, I love that you start by saying we need more pass catchers, and then you immediately suggest we cut receivers to make room. You should have said, "We need better pass catchers." And I agree. I actually think we make the cut elsewhere (maybe that other guy named Brown who never sees the field), or just bite the bullet and put the receiver who has had a bruised knee since July on the shelf.

Well, I thought I chose my words carefully and properly. Instead of receivers I chose "pass catchers" because well, Marlon has not been a pass catcher. Sometimes a pass target, often a pass dropper, but rarely a pass catcher.

Yeah, I agree regarding the contract. I, too, was surprised but I assume we assumed it was a freak injury.

I suppose this means Pitta will retire since he said he'd either play this year or retire. Is that right?

Isnt Waller on the IR? Would need to find someone else.

There's also no way we could carry 4 TE's. 3rd and long is inevitable in the game of football. Along with that comes a pass rush. We need guys quick off the ball and able to push down field. Looking at the potential 4 TE's, Gilmore is slow off the ball, Boyle is slow off the ball, Maxx must be/looks ever more slow off the ball, Pitta would be the only one of the guys that would help in this regard and no one even knows if he is going to play another down in the NFL.

We're already carrying 3 TE's. Adding a 4th would simply mean replacing someone else, and that could come from anywhere. I don't see how adding Pitta without dropping another TE hurts us on 3rd and long?

Having 4 TE's on the roster doesn't mean you can't put Aiken, Givens, Ross and Pitta on the field together. We would still have the personnel to go 3 or 4 wide when needed. Also, extra TE's on the field can help in 3rd and long, pass rush situations because you add extra blockers which allows those longer routes to develop.

Just not sure how having 4 TE's on the roster changes or effects what we do on 3rd and long at all.

DAMN YOU JAMES IHEDIGBO!

Another guy we let go that did well.   He would've solved a small problem for cheap that is now becoming huge in past few games.

To my understanding when Pitta received the hip  injury  and had surgery the doctors assured The Ravens and Pitta that the chances of him injuring his hip  again wasn't high. He did play like 5 or so games in that same year after being activated off of  i.r return designation.

I'm not really sure what The Ravens could have done better  after what they were  told by the doctor during Pitta first hip surgery and actually seeing the guy play for five games with out injuring his surgery repair hip . I would probably questioned the contract more if Pitta actually was placed on season ending i.r after the injury when he first sustained it but that wasn't the case.

James Ihedigbo is strong safety only and Will Hill is better than him whom also is a strong safety.

Sounds like he's open to giving it another shot next year...

@jeffzrebiecsun: Pitta will stay on PUP for the rest of the season, per sources. But it doesn't mean he'll officially retire.

@jeffzrebiecsun: @AGameTailgate My understanding is that is unlikely; Wants to give it another shot next year.

Everything I've seen other than Zrebiec says Pitta hasn't decided yet and will make decision by 4pm deadline. As a fan of the Ravens I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope he decides to play, however unlikely.

As a fan of Dennis Pitta, I'm going to hope he does whatever he thinks is best for him personally, even if that means retiring.

I just don't understand why doctors would have waited until today to say they advise him not to play.... after he's been practicing and playing. His situation couldn't have changed much, if at all, over the past several months.

So, they must have been advising him against it all along, and he's chosen to work toward coming back, and chosen to start practicing, which is giving me hope that maybe he's gonna throw caution into the wind and play.

Edit: Nevermind, the site is reporting he's done for the year. Darn it. I don't get why he's holding out hope to play next year... He said himself that if it's not ready now it won't be any different then. So, if you're planning on playing next year you might as well do it right now.

Perhaps it is possible that with additional strengthening, the muscles can be "taught" to keep the hip in place. He's got a lot of months to see if he can make a safe return. No reason for him to rush a retirement decision. Besides, there are plenty of reasons for the Ravens to keep him on IR (millions in cap issues).

There's also no way possible they can keep him on the roster next season. They can't take the cap hit for him to potentially play.

He will be released at some point. Hopefully another team can give the guy a chance to play.

Major respect for Pitta. If he does officially decide to hang them up at some point, I imagine we might try to keep him around the organization somehow.

He's damning him because he collided with Pitta on a play and killed his hip

A healthy Pitta could have gotten some interest in the free agent market, but I doubt anyone will want to touch him now. It might be in his best interest to simply retire a Raven rather than repeatedly trying and failing to come back.

Sad, but have to imagine he'll be cut this offseason. There's no incentive for him to retire, and it's better for us to take the cap hit and move on. While we would save money doing this post-June 1, it would still push dead money into 2017. I don't see him lasting past the early off-season. Gotta assume the Ravens will take the cap hit and move on quickly.

Its got to be so difficult for Pitta, he's always going to wonder 'what if' he could have played a full career w/ his bud Flacco and both of them in their primes. It's unfortunate, we all saw that chemistry grow throughout the SB run.

I could see Pitta willing to renegotiate his contract and convert his salary to incentive bonus based on playing time and certain production milestones in order to stick around next year... as opposed to getting cut and testing FA if he does want to come back.

Honestly, we all knew he wasn't coming back. So sad, he was turning into one hell of a TE.
