Could somebody clear something up for me ? I was under the impression that if a player participated in training camp that he was then not eligible for the PUP. Is this true and if not, could somebody explain exactly how all that works? Thanks.

Correct - anyone who is still injured when training camp starts (for the most part) starts on the 'preseason' PUP list.  If they're still on the PUP for the start of the regular season they cannot be activated until after the 6th game.  If a players practiced in training camp even just for 1 play, then they are no longer eligible to be added to the PUP list.

Yes but does it matter if he's fully participating or not? Bc the way Ryan mink made it sound on the mailbag questions was that yes he was going to participate in training camp and he would still be placed on the pup. So that kind of threw me off, is there certain stipulations that he has to abide by or some kind of loop hole, or is it if he practices AT ALL then he's automatically ineligible for the pup? Not sure if I just misunderstood Ryan or what.

Mink is wrong in that case. If Pitta participates at all in a formal practice, he would no longer be eligible for the PUP. While Pitta is on the PUP, the only things he can really do are lift and attend meetings. The second he steps on to that field, he's no longer on the PUP list.

Edit to add:

The only work on the field Pitta can do is on the sidelines with trainers. Maybe that's what Mink meant?

Just got the text. Expected to start on PUP as assumed. Makes sense and is the smart move for both Pitta and the team.

Would not surprise me if they sign a vet TE to the roster.

wouldnt be surprised but i doubt it. if we make anymore splash in free agency it will most likely be pass rusher or secondary

Depends on the perceived development of Maxx for me. If they get a week or two into camp and realize he's just not that far along, I see zero scenario where they head into the season banking on Crockett to fill both roles of a TE in this offense.

Signing any veteran TE won't be a splash anyway, just like signing Owen Daniels wasn't a splash.

I'm all in favor of strengthening the roster but if they sign a vet who do you suggest they cut?

I saw Pitta on the field practicing for voluntary minicamps and such - which you do not have to be cleared for. But when the mandatory stuff rolled around, he was relegated to side work with the training staff. He hasn't been medically cleared so isn't allowed during live practice. He might be able to catch balls as the QBs warm it, not sure.

john harbaugh stating exactly what i mentioned in the beginning of this thread, taken from this website just this morning..

“A couple of things are going to have to happen for him to play ultimately," Harbaugh said  "No. 1, he has to be cleared by the doctors. And, No. 2, he has to decide if he wants to play because obviously there will be some risk involved. He hasn't been cleared by the doctors.

"As you've seen before, he's been doing the individual part of practice. Minicamp, unless you're cleared, you can't come out to practice. I don't know if that's a rule or our policy, but that's the way it goes.  Until he gets cleared by the docs, he won't be able to practice and we'll just have to see where that goes from here."

that about sums it up

From my understanding, the only thing Pitta can do on the field is work off to the side with the trainers.

I got a question since Pitta is placed on pup does that mean The Ravens have opening on the roster ? Atleast for training camp cause I know it's that way when it's during the regular season.

Nope.  Pitta will be on the Active/PUP, meaning he still takes up a 90 man roster spot since, technically, he can be activated to practice at any time.

I feel sorry for Pitta and his injury, but at the same time his contract has been a colossal waste from a Ravens perspective both in terms of cap space and player availability.

my prediction - pitta is done, Williams isn't ready. Crockett has a good but not spectacular season.

Bump -- Any thoughts on what happens with Pitta now that we're 1-4 (potentially 2-4 or 1-5 when he's eligible to come back)? Personally, I'd be surprised to see him return, but you never know.

This decision seems more interesting with a losing record.

I actually was going to ask if he was eligible to come back this week. I say let him test himself out if he's cleared. As bad as thugs look playoffs are still a possibility.

Pitta & Boyle or Gillmore would be devastating if Pitta can be who he was. He looked good before he had the second injury. I think we should put him out there because it doesn't hurt to see what you have.

I really don't see Pitta coming back. Two major hip injuries is just too much. The guy could end up in a wheelchair if it keeps trying to come back.

That doesn't mean he won't. Players knowingly risk injury all the time. We've seen players return to the field and we've seen guys retire early and surprise everyone. I'm a little tired of the speculation that he's just going to retire. He may, and I and many others wouldn't fault him for it, but he hasn't yet.

the man should sit out the season then retire.

his dead money would be cut in half if he does it next season.

no point in hindering the development of our young TEs at this point.

unless we are going on a 10 game winning streak.
