Flacco led League in yards lost from dropped passes in 2014

Going to miss Torrey & Flacco connection on that. They knew they were going to gain yards when the corner was going to get beat

Saw that on BR. Crazy numbers. Anywhere to see the yards gained off PI?

I wrote some article on Torrey Smith's league leading PI yardsbased on an article I read last Oct about him with 123 yards then.  I had to go back thru each log to find out the 2014 total which would've put around 1100 yards.  A later article later coonfirmed he was the 2014 PI yard recipient leader.

"Joe Flacco hasnt even got 4,000 yards". Hate when people say that. Flacco has never had a recieving corps as strong as other elite quarterbacks. Seems like we struggle with drops every year. Hope that changes this year.

Many screamed for a wr in the first (finally got that) and without trying to get too hyped up... If a couple of our young guys live up to their potential we will have a great wr group to develop with Flacco for the next few years to go with potentially a great run game. Just gotta keep that line stout

Let's also realize that some of them were dropped TD passes, flacco couldve easily crossed 4300 yards /30 TD's let's also remember that most of his INTS were to Torrey Smith....I think 8 were towards Smith and Joe finished the season with 12 INTS, both of flaccos INTS in the postseason were towards smiths way... So imagine.....

Torrey was 2nd in drop percentage and first in DPI, putting him last at catching balls that should've been caught.

That's what Perrimans for, if he actually uses his speed those PI calls only go up.

Interesting. Joe, who can throw it 65 yards in the air, often underthrew TS on deep routes. A calculated move?

He underthrew him alot in 2011 but other than that year it really didn't happen that often.Especially not in these last two years.

The PI call was a strategy that Harbaugh/Kubs came up with after realizing that the Torrey Joe connection wasn't very reliable.  It worked with Torrey's 4.4 speed and the mere threat of a homerun play made DBs opt for the PI just in case.  I think that at least half of Torrey's PI would've gone for catches, significant YAC and TDs.  However it erase the fact that he was still not reliable down field as they had hoped.  His rookie year in 2011 was showed that they were going to dish him the deep ball (remember the Steelers game?) and it often took several attempts to make that happen once in a game, if it ever did.  However, by 2014, Joe wasn;t under throwing him much at all.  In the end he was a decent mid-field receiver with a nose for the end zone and a potrential threat of going yard IF he caught a long ball..

Steve smith led the league I dropped passes. Sometimes it was painfully obvious.

Very true although technically he was tied for the most (10) with D. Thomas and K. Benjamin. Still, no one complains about Smith Sr. despite being one of the worst every season for drops.

this doesnt even account for certain td's dropped, 2 alone were dropped in week 1, it also doesnt account for YAC when he hits an open wr, it also doesnt account for chain-moving balls being dropped on 3rd down and killing any chance of gaining more yards on longer drives.

to think about what his numbers would look like if 3/4 of the passes dropped over the years were caught, i think its safe to say that joe averages about 6-8 more td passes and i think he would have topped 4k in each of the past 4 seasons, if 3/4 of his dropped passes were caught last year i think he makes the pro bowl with a 4600+ yard season.

also lets factor in 2013 when perfectly placed passes were tipped by our receivers and led to int's(ahem dallas clark @ buffalo)

also, torrey didnt just draw PI's by coincidence, that is something torrey worked on, the whole team knew that torrey would either burn a db deep and have the ball fall right in his hands, or he wouldnt be able to gain full separation and he would have to draw a PI because he wasnt catching any contested balls, torrey made it a point to never leave yards on the field and thats why you so often see him slowing down and swerving while tracking the ball in tight coverage, he made db's knock into him while trying to catch the ball on purpose.

i do applaud torrey for making due even with his clear lack of ball skills, but i personally would rather have caught td's instead of giving up and going for the PI and having a drive stall in the red zone

This is why I've never bought into that lack of 4k yards business with Joe.  He's missed that number by less than 200 yards the last 3 years straight, all while not only losing a bunch of yards to drops and PI calls but while sitting out several quarters of games every one of those years.  And anyone who thinks the division he plays in doesn't make a difference needs to recheck his stats from 2010 and this past year against the so-called NFC South defenses.  I think this year is going to be very different - Joe is going to be completing a lot more passes to receivers with tremendous YAC ability, and he's got a lot of talented targets to choose from.

that's a good point man- didn't think of that. A lot of drives stalled out with drops on 3rd down- if those passes were caught then he gets a whole new set to put up more yards or possibly touchdowns. Although this is true for every quarterback - it says a lot that we led the league In drops- ESP since joe was so close to 4000 and now bc of a measly 20 some yards writers and analysts can continue to say he's never topped 4k... Flacco was 12th in the league in yards and only 100 behind Brady.

Thought that was interesting. Add in his dropped yardage, adjusted for YAC and yards lost to PI and Flacco would've likely ranked in the 5-8 range in terms of yardage.

Not shabby for our guy who can't put up stats. And of the QBs with more yards than Flacco, only Rogers had less attempts. So, with the adjusted yardage Flacco would have likely ranked 2-4 in yards per attempt. His number goes to 8+ yds/att. Pretty darn elite.

The other 3 guys in that ball park - Rogers, Roethlisberger, and Romo - all have top notch weapons to throw to. We know who they are... Each of those guys had 1 if not 2 receiving options better than any one Flacco had to throw to.

And all had run games on par with if not better than Flaccos (Romo and Roethlisberger had the #1 and #2 backs in the league, while Lacy is nothing to sneeze at) so there's no argument to be made that Flacco had it easier with teams fearing our ground game more; opening up longer passes more frequently. Though it's pretty definitive proof that there's a strong correlation between having a great running game and your QB having higher yds/att.

Also, of those top 12 QBs in terms of passing yards I think only 3 had less interceptions. Pretty sure he only drops one spot to 5 if you go by Int's per attempt. Personally I look at yards per attempt and least interceptions per attempt as two of the most important stats when evaluating QB play.

And that's because I think the most important job of a QB is to keep the offense moving when the run game stalls and to keep possession while doing so. TDs to me aren't as telling because a running team like ours will punch it in with a rb more often than pass.

The other most important stat for QBs imo is 1st downs. This is where I'd like to see Joe improve. He did relatively poorly compared to the top QBs in the league though I'd like to see how many of those drops would've been 1st downs, and where he'd rank if everyone's PI's were added to their first down totals.

But in 2 out of the 3 most important stats for QBs imo, Flacco is top 2-4 in the NFL when adjusting as best you can to not hurt the QBs stats for things beyond his control like drops and PIs.

Pretty interesting to me....

good goaline points. Everyone Peyton gets to the 1 yard line they throw it in. Doesn't matter who's in the backfield

Thats because Peyton calls his own plays to pump up his stats.

I should just rename myself to "Torrey hater" but I can't ignore when such evidence arises: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/07/03/why-not-all-targets-are-caught/

Torrey Smith was a mess last season, dropping 11 passes, falling down twice, stopping a route on a good target, etc. He’s in danger of falling way off the fantasy radar in San Francisco’s run-first, low-scoring offense. Smith’s 12 touchdowns on 54 receptions last season isn’t even in the vicinity of sustainable.

I must say this thread sounds like a bunch of cry baby excuses. If my aunt had huevos she'd be my uncle. As it is last years Ravens team was top 5 in the league talent wise. The receiving talent was better last year than this year at this point in time. The offense and the team was plenty good enough to win a championship and came just short. This just looks like a bunch of meaningless sour grapes.

With Torrey in SF, I am interested to see this same stat at the end of the 015 season.

lol you honestly believe that we were top 5 talent wise? We literally were starting DBs from the street lol

The team as a whole v Absolutely. No question about it. Every team has a weakness, but if you look at our roster top to bottom its right there with just a few others.
