The most Clutch QB of all time is............

22 posts in this topic

............Eli Manning.  But Joe is 4th according to the website thirtyfiveeight.com.  Read the story here.

What I like about this analysis is that they use an Elo score (defined more fully in the article) which is based on the median post season performance of all primary QBs to play in the league since the NFL merger.  It takes into account and adjusts for how well a replacement level QB (an averge back-up) would've fared.

Both Joe and Eli blow Manning and Tom Brady out of the water.  It's important to remeber that this is not a discussion on "elite".  We're talking "clutch".

im surprised to hear 4th, i coulda swore i saw somewhere that joe is 2nd or 3rd. \

i would have to say montana, joe flacco, and then eli manning, in that order, eli manning may have had incredibly clutch moments in 2 stretches but he has also looked wayyyyy worse than joe and for much longer stretches and his team has been on the edge for a long time now because of it.

cant deny eli's brilliance for 2 particular runs, but aside from that he has a overall very ugly career, big yardage numbers and all, but he has mostly been about equivalent to jay cutler outside of his 2-3 great seasons

I always thought Johnny Unitas;his overall carreer and his work in SB5 was a great memory.  John Mackey wasted the D

As cool as it sounds, I have to take those rankings with a grain of salt. I mean if Trent Dilfer is top 10 in any ranking it loses credibility with me.

I always pick Joe but I am a self admitted HOMMER. Montana was money Kelly was really good until he stepped foot on the turff for the Super Bowl 4 streight apperances and 4 streight losses I dont think it's fair to blame just Kelly but thats how the NFL works. Aikman and Young were both pretty good too in clutch moments.

He was, but did his best work before the NFL merger which is when the median stats for prinary QBs was started.

Yes, but not surprising.

Remember this is not an "elite" discussion.  Dilfer was clutch in a sense -- he didn;t make many mistakes and was clutch in the play-offs.  He was the right guy at the right time and made the most of his one year with Bmore.

The AFL/NFL merger should have been a parameter in the topic as the phrase "all time" means from day one to now.  When you think of it, passing and clutch would be initiated by coaches like Paul Brown and Sid Gilman who created those plays.

Elite vs Clutch I'd prefer elite, especially if it leads to 6 SB appearances vs just one.

Lucky for us, Joe is elite AND clutch

I hate the word ELITE. Way overused, and overrated.

I don't understand the absolute obsesssion with categorizing Quarterbacks..really..really annoying. You guys should quit jt.

I feel like fans are over compensating. Joe isn't elite. To be "elite", you must perform at that level at a consistent basis, which I think all of us can agree, Joe doesn't. He's a good qb, who steps his game way up in the playoffs. It is what it is. He's not clutch to me either, but I think he'll put you in a good situation more times than he will lose the game for you, I think.

I'm curious as to where Peyton ranks.

161st measured against expectations based on his elo score, and 28th based on expectations with a replacement level QB.

Always love seeing Kurt Warner on lists like these, reminds me of how good he was + how fun to watch. How'd almost everyone find a way to underrate him as a QB? Dude ruled, no one talks about him enough.

And about 258 pages about Joe.....

eli is a marginal QB who gets so damn lucky  in the QB.   having eli above montana or brady is disgrace!

and give me flacco over eli anytime anyday in the playoffs!
