[News] Wide Receiver Jeremy Butler Has 'Incredible' Minicamp

78 posts in this topic

The Ravens have primarily used him out of the slot, where he’s worked the middle of the field and also come up with a few big plays down the field.

“The slot is where I’m most comfortable,” Butler said. “This offense has given me the ability to show what I can do as far as being in the slot, being physical with smaller guys, and being quicker with bigger guys.”

He's really gonna make it hard for Carter and/or Camp to make the active roster.  You can't teach height and if he can take advantage of the defenders that match up against him during training camp and contribute on ST, I can't see him not making the active roster.

For once, we finally have a good problem at WR, too much talent.  Bad thing is, we're going to have to cut someone who will likely contribute on another team.  Best of luck guys, may the best WR win.  #StayHealthy

not to sound like a pessimist, but ill believe it when i see it, same goes for every wr on this roster not named steve smith, everyone raved about tandon doss in 2013 OTA's, they raved about deonte thompson before that, and they raved about laquan williams before that, and i could go on and on all the way back to justin harper but you get the point.

i would love for all this hype to finally be real, i think breshad perriman is the real deal, i think kamar aiken has the most potential to be the #2 to start the season, and he has the most potential to be the #2 after smitty steps down and breshad becomes the #1, but this is all talk of potential. we have just been force fed so much hype about players who never become anything more than a camp body

Last year he was doing better than Aiken in training camp before he was redshirted. Looks like he took it seriously. Then their was that interview off-site with him where he compaired himself most closely to Boldin. I think that was before he joined the Ravens and said he likes to be physical and make the tough catches. I'm glad he is doing well. I'm glad they are all doing well.

Is it possible to keep some of those talented receivers in the practice squad? Steve Smith isn't going to be here very long and I want to keep these receivers for the future.

I live right down the road from UT-Martin and was excited to see a TN boy make it to the Ravens. Hope he continues to do well.

Having the starting QB single you out in a positive way, is great for a young guy like Butler. Does make him a lock to make the team, but it puts him in a great position going into camp. I've said before that although you can't really make the final roster in OTAs and Minicamp, you can put yourself in position to make the coaches take notice of you and start to factor in ways that you can help this offense.

For him to be seemingly carving out a niche as a reliable slot guy right now is huge for him. Does that mean he makes the team? No, but it does mean that the coaches will continue to give him every opportunity to prove them right in terms of what he can do.

Over these next 5 weeks or so, coaches will be developing roles for each guy in the offense and once TC starts the coaches will want to see how each player responds to that role. That slot role is wide open in this offense imo.

Butler was considered at the lower end for a keeper.  However, he has the size similar to Perriman, no media hype about catch abillity and the attitude to take a spot on the 53 squad. Last year he had little chances but I'm glad he adds spice to the group. competition

+> Camp Body.  Thats appropiate.  We, as Ravens fans are fortunate to have a group of talent but as you say its hype. I think we are rooting for our favorites in these forums and I like Waller.

It's definitely possible. Right now the NFL is full of young and exciting WRs on each team. You won't really know what these guys are made of until preseason. You have to remember a guy like Kamar Aiken was on 3 different practice squads before joining the Ravens. Had Marlon Brown not gotten the chance to play for a WR straved Ravens team in 2013, he'd probably be a PS guy right now. So it really just boils down to opportunities. I'm sure around the NFL world the Ravens WR group isn't really impressive at all.

High expectations for Jeremy, been keen on him since last year. On a side note apparently Zach Orr has had a great offseason and camp, taking first team reps today. Glad to see another UDFA making a solid case to be on the team, however that doesn't bode well for Arthur Brown. Really hoping he turns it around.

Gonna be some great competition to make the team, tough choices for coaches, and another great year to be a ravens fan.

Nothing like some competition to get the juices flowing. Butler is making an impression and if the numbers don't work out others will be waiting in line. Going from slightly negative ground in the WR capacity to one that looks to be very strong, at least on paper.

He ran a 4.6 though.... Don't know how he'll do outside, if he can perfect his routes he might be a good slot receiver. 4.6 for a a receiver nowadays is s little suspect.

don't even start with the 40 talk, the 40 literally means nothing, the 40 is a practiced skill, most receivers don't play anywhere near their 40 speed, Perriman is a perfect example of that...

I'd be more interested in his 10 yard split and shuttle times, because he's very quick and explosive for a guy his size. I could careless if he's an outside guy or a slot, just as long as he can produce.

If thats true than Perriman was a wasted pick because we drafted him FOR speed. His speed is the reaso we looke past his routes and inconsistent hands. If Perriman was average speed we wouldn't of drafted him.

at what point did i say he was slow or wasn't fast? Its nothing ground breaking that Perriman doesn't play at 4.2 speed, everybody knows or should know that by now. And no, we did not draft him solely because he's fast.

He was drafted because he plays fast and the Ravens are looking at him as a well rounded potential #1 WR not just because he ran a great 40. If that's the case then Yamon Figurs should have been the best ouside WR in the NFL.

i too like waller. and i think a unappreciated part of his game is that he came from a triple option, his primary job was to block downfield for exterior run plays, with our stretch scheme that is a very unheralded trait but it could be a big deal.

i wasnt a big waller fan throughout the draft process as i thought he looked very stiff in what little video i could find on him, but he looks alot more limber in these OTA vids, i mean he looks alot more natural than i expected, id love to see waller, perriman, mad maxx and crockett all pan out, thats just a filthy 22 set

We have all the receivers Joe could ask for. They are all very talented (Smith, Perriman, Brown, Waller, Aiken and Butler). It won't matter much who is catching the ball, someone will be. This will be a high octane offense under Trestman and IMO all these guys will get on the field. Gonna be hard for Campanaro to make this team with his injury problems. Probably just stash him on IR.

Great to hear. I am happy for Butler I expect this article and the others seeing him perform that well might get the WR's competitive juices flowing even more. It is going to be a fun competetion to watch develope for sure. It could end up being a hell of a hard choice for the coaches to get down to the final 53 guys.
