[News] Elvis Dumervil Takes Aim At Two Milestones

19 posts in this topic

Dumervil benefits from Suggs. It will be interesting to see if teams move the tight end to Elvis's side or if they send the back over to chip him instead of Suggs. If that happens, and Suggs decides to get into shape, it may be Suggs best year ever.

The contrast of off season conditioning strategies between the 2 vets, Suggs and Doom is like night and day. I hope the saying "different strokes for different folks" is true in this case and I hope Suggs is back to peak form by the season's start. However, I am far more confident in Doom's philosophy of year round conditioning.

Back to back seasons with a pass rusher hitting 100 sacks and Strahan's record. Yeah, those are some pretty impressive milestones. Add a ring, and then we'll talk Canton.

Elvis looks in good shape to have a lot of sacks this year 17 or more again LOL and I hope Terrell can be in better shape so he could have a big year as well.

This kind of attitude puts Suggs' even more into perspective. It seems as if his fire is starting to completely fade out. I hope Suggs finds a way to relight it, otherwise it'll come around to bite the pass rush, including Dumervil, and our whole defense in the butt.

That's the most painful thing, because I believe teams will be concentrated on Dumervil. So if Suggs could be even a little bit motivated, it could very easily be another DPOY season for him. But he "feels weird" and is "at the back end of his career" and most definitely "is not the Suggs of 2011" like he put it. From that first presser it seemed as if he would rather sit on his fat butt on the couch, eat Doritos and watch someone else play, rather than benefiting vastly from the fact that blockers will be tied down with a pro-bowl pass rusher on the other side from him. Smh.

I pray that Suggs would regain his motivation and fire, get in shape, and start acting like a leader and example on and off the field and NOT bring this whole team, who otherwise have unprecedented amount of talent, down.

Give Suggs some time to get into camp and get motivated again.  He's had a tough year and been through some adversity.  I'm not sure it's about the fact that he would "rather sit on his fat butt on the couch, eating Doritos and watching someone else" as much as it has been the lack of familiar faces around him, both personally and professionally.  Once they get into "Football Mode", I think he ramps it up.  Dooom is gonna help him with that...  They will be a power duo once again.

I have to say, I agree more with Dumerville's belief that you have to train hard in the off-season and try to Stay in the best shape that you can and report, therefore, in your best shape possible. I think that's even more important as an athlete ages. I have to believe that by doing that you lessen the chance of injury as you have to work harder to regain your playing condition if you don't which, I believe, increases the chance of injuries. To me it's a common sense thing. Keeping yourself in playing condition is easier on the body than letting the body conditioning go and then having to work so hard to get it back into proper shape. The up and down on one's body is harder than maintenance. At least, that's the way it worked for me when I was playing sports. Of course, it takes work and sacrifice, but it's worth it if you want to continue to be the best athlete you can be, and I always believed that I owed that to myself. Peaks and valleys in your condition takes its toll and I think it shortens your career. I know it's not football but, still, a prime example of this is the boxer Bernard Hopkins, who has never been out of top shape in his entire life. Yes, even between fights. And all he did was become the oldest man to ever hold a world championship. He has sated many times that he credits his eating and conditioning habits for his success. I don't think football players are any different. A body is a body.

I'm not hating on Suggs. He's had a great career to this point with the Ravens and also, to his credit, he did his best to try to fill the leadership void created when Ray retired. But, really, the contrast between his attitude and Dumerville's is striking. What is there, one year of age difference between them? Yet, listen to the pair of them speak, especially about conditioning. I listen to Dumerville and it's easy to hear that he still has that fire. I can't say the same about Suggs. He truly sounds like he's just about to call it quits. It really sounds like he may have had enough, or is nearly at that point. I mean, Elvis is still talking about goals, and Suggs is hinting about retirement. I hear a very stark contrast. I really hope that Suggs can get his fire lit before the season starts.
