[News] 6/17 News And Notes: Big Plays Continue For Wide Receivers

42 posts in this topic

im a little confused because they said the recievers had a huge day but i also read somewhere else that many of them had several drops and wore down. i guess thats kind of telling though- if theres several drops and your still having a huge day that must mean were pretty darn good. i was also happy to read that elam had a pick 6- and then i read it was schaub that threw the ball...what do ya know?

oh yeah that picture is pretty sweet.

All of these people worried about a couple of drops...  I am guessing that there aren't any other teams in the NFL who are reporting drops this offseason... Why are we the only ones?  Because it's only our guys that are dropping balls...  We are going to be awful this year.  We have no clear cut "alpha" WR on our roster, and no one that is capable of being a #1 yet.

OK, just wanted to make sure that I'm clear on all of this nonsense.

I think we need to invest a little more at the backup qb position, because Shaub is REALLY STRUGGLING, and it's only minicamp... WOW!

Yes, it's only minicamp.

i would say its too early to really worry about it, but from what ive been hearing hes not just struggling but straight up choking. john harbaugh also made a comment that he usually tends to struggle the most when the media is around, which goes along with the idea that all of this stuff is in his head. he got in such a big slump and just never seemed to be able to get out of it. when the cameras are on him hes probably thinking in the back of his mind "man i dont want to mess up right now" instead of just slingin the ball. i think right now alot of ppl (including him) think that he is a lock for the backup job, but if he keeps it up i think he might actually get beat out by rynner or lovelocke.

as far as the depth chart for the receivers- i expect something similar to this comment i read earlier:

"This year might be the year where there is no real number system for the wide receivers, but packages that see guys switch around depending on the situation. It won't lead to big numbers for any individual player, but it will lead to better matchups and hopefully more scoring."

Its typically better to just take a "ignore" approach from most OTA reports you see. Every year, every fan site glows about how well players are doing and how great the offense and defense look, and yet ultimately half the league struggles in that regard.

I've never once seen a headline article on this site or any other site that is bashing a player for having a bad OTA or even camp. Its just not going to happen. This time of year, most coaches talk up everybody, and half the battle is conditioning for most.

How I see our WR corp to start the season (barring injuries etc.)

1) Smith, Sr./Perriman

2) Aiken/Waller

3) Brown/Carter

Butler to the PS

Campanaro to the PUP/IR

As the season progresses, Perriman will earn more snaps.

And if Campanaro gets healthy, he moves into the rotation, mainly as slot WR.

true for the most part- but in this case we actually are talking about a player that is struggling- not just your usual gloating.

and interceptions are interceptions, you cant speculate on whether a reporter is over or under exxagerating when it comes to that. i realize theyre not even tackling and what not so i dont give it too much weight, but i think so far hes had about 10 interceptions and atleast 3 pick 6's, just not a good sign from somebody who everybody had the same concerns about before he was even signed.

Sure, but again, its the preseason. He might be throwing INTs on passes he wouldn't normally throw in regular season games, because there's no risk to him throwing INTs in a preseason game. He's not really auditioning for a job at this point.

I personally could care less how well or poorly Schaub plays, because everybody on the planet knows that a significant injury to Joe basically torpedoes our whole season. I trust Schaub to not throw 4 picks in a game if he needs to make one spot start, but if he's going to be a 6 week starter, its pretty much game over in my eyes.

I'm excited and can't wait for the season. Keep in mind this is OTA's and the Cleveland Browns fans are also excited and they are 5 years away from being 5 years away.
