[News] Late For Work 6/16: How Long Till Breshad Perriman Is A Starter?

66 posts in this topic

I know it is just one guy, but whether the Ravens O line was #1 last year, or top 5 ... after the year they came off of in 2013, it is an amazing turn around. I hope our secondary has a similar transformation (but that no other part of our team goes into the tank a the same time ...)

I think I might be reaching into the future a bit (beyond this season), but I kinda like the idea of the main receiveing corps be: Two Knights and a Golden Gopher. Sounds like a TV-show worth watching. :)

I think Ray deserves a second chance based on the character he showed over the years. I do think good people make mistakes, and his was a terrible one indeed. What grinds my gears is how someone like Floyd Mayweather, who's a serial abuser of women and who knows what else, receives almost no flak whatsoever. IMO he should be banned from the sport and in jail, but for some reason he gets a pass.

"The Ravens had zero intention of making Joe the starter in his first year. Kyle Boller suffered a season ending injury before the season started, and Troy Smith had an illness I believe that made Joe the starter Week 1."

Sounds like the perfect next man up scenario?

No player in the NFL has paid anywhere near the extreme price for any DV incident than Ray Rice. Not even close. Ray deserves another chance and paid dearly for what he did. I still believe Ray Rice is a man worthy of redemption.

Without a doubt. If I were Ray Rice with all of his time and resources I would conduct extensive background checks on every TMZ reporter and talk show host that vilified him and basically pushed to completely ruin his life and livelihood and see how they like it when everyone knows your business. Time to force reporters to be actual journalists again.

Ray Rice is not in the NFL because we all are hypocrites on some level. We are all flawed but we all want to be seen as impeccable. I've just got to work on me that's all.

No one would care about the skeletons in the closet of a TMZ reporter.  That's their job.  The best way to avoid being a TMZ bad headline, is to not do something that would make you a TMZ headline.

Our set of receivers breaks into several categories by height. At 5-9 we have SSS and Campanaro. At 6-2 we have Aiken, Butler, and Perriman. At 6-5 plus we have Brown and Waller. They also vary by speed and bulk.

It may be that when the season begins we vary our receivers for each game depending on what kinds of match-up problems each different mix of receivers would impose on our opponent. Obviously we would choose the mix that gave our opponent of a particular week the biggest problems in coverage. Thus there might not be a first team set of receivers that is always the same choice for every game.

Why in the world would you bench a 1st and maybe a 2nd and just maybe a 3rd and 4th draft pick and pay them good money to become a Raven and say you are not a Starter, Pre Season camps doesn't bring out their true characters and greatness until they hit the battlefield, look what the Ravens did to Joe Flacco in his 1st season, you trying to tell me he was lucky, I don't think so, he had a very good OC in Cam Cameron, the Ravens threw him to the wolves and look how Great he's been, You will never know about a player until it happens in reality. Ray Rice should be given a 2nd chance, what he did was terrible I know.

Draft picks should always earn their playing time just like anybody else should.

There's dozens of players who all think they deserve a shot to play, and in reality, many of them will never get that chance.

Matt Elam, Author Brown and even Jimmy Smith were early draft picks and most analysts saw them as defensive gems of the draft, yet Elam is the only one that started his rookie season.

Elam was decent playing out of position is rookie season, but lost his starting role last season

Brown seems to have potential as a linebacker, its just the two in front of him are better.  Usually a guy like this would still play every game on special teams and as a backup, but during his rookie season he struggled blocking during punts and nearly got Sam Kock killed.

Jimmy Smith struggle with injuries and when he was on the field he had issues finding the ball when it was coming towards him.  But year three he turned things around and became one of the top corners in the league.

You can even look at Ray Rice.  The guy had the potential his first season to be the teams number one back, but because he was the third string back because the team felt more comfortable going with a veteran like Mcgahee.

With the rave reviews of Perriman right now I think he will start, at least some of the games this season.  But your right, a player's draft position doesn't give a starting spot on any team.

Ray Rice.... does deserve a 2nd chance and soon! Cmon....Dante Stalworth got a 2nd chance and he killed someone! Ben is in the league and his crimes were more heinous towards women then Rays every day of the week. Plus many players in the league committed the same infraction and were given 2nd or 3rd or more chances. Ray Macdonald, James Harrison, Greg Hardy, and so many more! What he did was wrong and he should have been punished and was! He served his sentence... he has shown that he gets that he was wrong (charges were dropped) and the precedent has been set... There are a ton of players in the NFL currently failing in the moral court... but ray served his penalty and has done everything he can to make restitution for his infraction. Its time to move on! Ray deserves another shot!

I love Perrimans potential but I don't want to have to depend on him this early in his career. We are too diverse and too talented at that position to not get serious production from multiple sources. That will give Perriman time to develop into a superstar and remove some of the pressure and that will keep all of our WR corps fresh and healthy heading into the playoffs. (and make us harder to defend as an offense)!

OFC Ray Rice desires a second chance. Unfortunately the push to bring out attention to domestic violence has put him in the center of a social witch hunt regardless of what he does to try to redeem himself. Too many vengeful women activist and men playing big daddy out there threatening reprisal actions if he is signed scares most if not all NFL teams into not allowing him this chance. Shame too, I guess if a person makes a mistake then there is no way back for some folk. Hummm.....must be a lot of perfect people out there huh? GO RAVENS!

None of those things occurred on video. Ray Rice's did.

It makes all the difference in the world.

And for what its worth... Rice is eligible to sign with any team that wants him. He's not currently being punished for literally anything. I think its time to stop pretending, and realize that his lack of perceived skills has a lot more to do with it than most people think.

Agree with your statement steelcityraven. Ray Rice does deserve a second chance. He was punished, and fulfilled the requirements of his pre-trial intervention program, did more counseling than was required and his charges were dropped.

Of course Ray deserves another chance. Not the Ravens but the NFL....it's a crime what they have done to Ray. Let the man work!!

The reason NFL teams did not sign him is hinged upon their marketing image with Ray Rice in the backfield.  He has the talent and certainly he has served his ordeal along with his supportive wife and family. Unfortunately, teams don't want the risk.

To make such a generalized statement without clarification is offensive.

The fact that Ray Rice's incident of DV was recorded on video has nothing to do with the severity of the issue of domestic violence as it relates to DV acts committed by other players in the league and to state so is an affront to the victims of DV.  Just because their incidents were not recorded on video doesn't make them any less egregious, appalling or abhorrent.

Rice was not himself stat-wise his last year he played with us his stats were down and he just looked slow and punchy at best that could be a factor in teams showing no interest in him granted he was hurt that year. Plus I dont remember him showing up to the first ever veteran combine to try to help himself out a lot of other veterans showed up and participated in front of scouts and represenitives from most or all the NFL teams that were on hand to see what the veterans looking for an NFL home had left in the tank. I believe he deserves another chance but I am tired of hearing about him he is eating up 9 MILLION DOLLARS of our cap space for making a very stupid mistake. So he is still hurting our Ravens as far as I am concerned. Wish him the best I am just happy it wont be in Raven purple and black.

Perriman will be who they drafted him top be. He'll be a starter and a star on the ravens before the year ends. I'm more interested in Waller at this point. I have high hopes for him to progress and be a factor in the offense. At 6'6" and Tory Smith speed this could be the hidden gem that puts the ravens over the top.

You're absolutely right. However, people are very visual, and although all acts of domestic violence are egregious, seeing it makes it seem more real. Plus the league likes to pretend to care, but they don't. They just care about making money. Ray Rice would still be in the league right now had that video not surfaced. That's why it took another reoccurrence for Ray McDonald and Greg Hardy to finally be reprimanded.

I 100% agree with you, and I too would like to see Rice back as a Raven.  If not a Raven, than I hope Rice finds a good team.

I think the issue is with keeping and signing players like Ray Rice is all of the outside negativity.  If fans are happy with their favorite franchise signing a player in Rice's situation, than so be it.  Should a franchise really care what non-fans care?  non-fans aren't going to buy the jerseys, memorabilia and season tickets either way.

After going to the extent of having the Ray Rice jersey exchange days in order to distance themselves from him, and having thousands upon thousands of fans in attendance, I'm thinking that the chances of the front office turning around and doing a complete 180 by re-signing him, and putting him BACK into a Ravens jersey are absolutely zero. No ifs, ands, or maybes about that. He'll get a chance somewhere else though, it's just a matter of time.
