Areas of weakness with current roster.

What position do you think we still need to bolster?

As it stands now, this has to be the most talented, deep and balanced roster we've probably ever seen.  However, there's one area of concern for me and that's the depth at QB.  Considering the fact that Schaub was brought in for $2M, hearing him struggle really bothers me. I know in the past, we've only gone one deep at the backup QB, but if there's one position that needs more quality depth it's QB.

Depth at QB isn't a big deal to me because there aren't 32 quality starting QBs, let alone 32 quality backup QBs. If your QB goes down, you're almost always done except for the rare occurrence.

true but say flacco just goes down for a game or two and we need somebody to step in just to get us over the hump? I don't like hearin about Schaub throwing all these picks in practice. Seems to me his confidence is still shot. Crazy to say but We may be better off with lovelocke or rynner at the healm. I know we still have a long way to go and guys aren't even wearing pads yet but it's not a good sign. Edited by January J

Our biggest weakness as of right now is probably WR. Our WR corp will depend solely on how Perriman does, with an aging Steve smith and other unproven players.

Agreed.  Sounds like our backup QB this year is worse than the one we had the past 3 years at 5x the cost.

You worried about a QB stepping in and winning, but you would rather take the two QBs who have never played a NFL snap over a former Pro Bowler and guy who has lead the league in passing for a season? Schaub has hit a wall but give him a little credit.

It's a valid concern, but there is no sure thing out there as depth that could win us those games. Backups are backups for a reason. Marc Bulger is probably the only backup ever that I thought could come in and win for us, and he never even played a snap for us.

funny bc what could be our biggest weakness could potentially be our biggest strength.

I get your point, but if this version of Schaub is the one that was benched in Houston, can the 2 rookies be much worse?

FORMER pro bowler that was beat out by a rookie last year that also had never taken an nfl snap. Look how that turned out. Once a qbs confidence is shot that bad it's hard to get it back. It seems that Schaub could throw a pick 6 with 6 defenders on the feild. I was actually happy we signed him as a backup- but to hear about the poor performances and interceptions in OTA's is a little concerning.

Yes. Lovelocke played for Praire View A&M and i remember Rynner being quite average at best for UNC.

Maybe it would be legit if we had different rookie QBs, but the other guys in the roster aren't going to make a 53 man anywhere in the league. Huge diffrence between Derek Carr, high 2nd rounder and Jerry Lovelocke UDFA out of Praire View A&M

Area of weakness for me? I'd probably say inside linebacker. Outside of Mosley and Daryl Smith, who's there? My biggest question with Mosley is how improved will his coverage be. With Daryl Smith, the question is how soon will Father Time catch up to him? Also, what if one goes down? Who steps up?

that's a good point- but every now and then you find hidden talent. I don't particularly care what school the guy came from. And remember were only talking about finding a backup Caliber qb, right now I would go with the guy with experience too- but if he continues to throw nothing but picks in practice/ preseason and rynner or lovelocke can Atleast protect the ball and Atleast give our receivers a chance to make plays what can you do? Doesn't matter if we paid him a million- if the undrafted guy outperforms him then that's who we will go with. I dont consider Schaub a lock at this point. Edited by January J

Well, there's Arthur Brown. McClellan has always been a decent player. It's hard to replace guys, though, so it's not an easy question to answer by using the preface "if this guy goes down" because that can happen at any position and it's very hard to have the depth across the entire team to sustain such injuries.

I think to answer this question, I would look at the weakest starter on the team. That's how I see it. Who's the weakest starter on the team? The starters are starters for a reason.

Flacco is good. The OL is very strong, although I'm not a big fan of Zuttah and he's the weak link in our OL, IMO. Juszczyk is good. I like Gillmore, but he's not proven beyond being a blocking TE. It's hard for me to say he's great, so if he's our starting TE, or a rookie Williams or Boyle, then TE could be the weakness of the team from this point in the season. I think very highly of Gillmore, so please don't come at me with hating on the guy. I think he could be the best TE on the roster this year. I am expecting big things from him. WR could also be a weakness. Smith Sr is a good player, though, and he's proven. He's probably better than a lot of other starting WRs on other teams. RB isn't the biggest weakness. Forsett is the top guy, I like Taliaferro. Allen is unproven.

I'd seriously consider center, as I don't like Zuttah much. Just because he's better than Gino doesn't make him great. Since I think of the OL as a whole, I think they'll be fine. If I had to choose a position group on offense, it would be TE, RB, WR. Right now, I am leaning TE. TE doesn't have much established as starters, only rookies, Gillmore, and Pitta with a bad hip. WR has Smith, and I like him, with a lot of questions after him and even with him. RB also has questions, with Forsett as the starter, second-year Taliaferro, and a rookie Allen, of whom I like a lot. Since I look at the starters, I go with TE for the offense.

As for defense, I'd say DL but I am confident in our depth and what I've seen of Jernigan and Williams so I'll pause there. It's easy to say OLB, but Suggs and Dumervil were insanely productive last year so it's hard to discredit them for age. CB would be easy but the starters are really solid. Safety also looks good with Hill and Lewis.

I think TE is it for me, but I don't expect that to be the weakness in the future. I think we'll be more than fine there, but right now, this question is too early for me to guess anything different.

like I said earlier about the wide receivers, the same goes for the tight ends. What could be one of our weaknesses could potentially be our biggest strength. It's hard to tell at this point. Right now I think the big wildcard is the returner position. It gets overlooked a lot- but we still have no clue who will be returning kickoffs or punts.

I'm concerned that Brown hasn't had playing time for the past couple of year and I agree about McClellan. In all honestly, I actually forgot about him. And you make a valid point about the injury thing. I guess I just feel more comfortable about almost every position than ILB. That's just me.

been stating that schaub was waste of a pickup since day one. dude hasnt looked good in years and people were waiting in line at will call to hop on this dudes bandwagon when we signed him, smh. looks like im right yet again. although, i dont see our QB situation as an area of weakness because of Flaccos durability. it was just a huge waste of money.

i think the area of concern is defensive ends/ outside LBs, and of course our secondary. dumervil and suggs are getting up there in age, and the next group of young guys look decent, but with injury bugs and previous lack of playing time with that position, it may make or break our season. i hope these young guys can be there late season and playoffs with full tank of gas, because we cant count solely on suggs and dumervil. so far as secondary... no need to explain there. its already pretty obvious if you have been watching this team. im just really pulling for kendrick lewis more than any other player on the defense this year.

all other positions on our team look solid. Oline is prob top 5 in NFL. RBs will split carries and play dynamic. WR's are imo most underrated/ talented group of guys on our team. TEs will be beast without a doubt, plenty of two TE sets. Dline will prob be top 3 Dline in league, and LBs are BEAST. Two words.. CJ MOSLEY!!

you couldbnt be more wrong. depend solely on a rookie? unproven players? lol. we probably wont even start perriman right out of the gate. we'll be throwing balls at kamar aiken, marlon brown, SSS, etc who have all proven themselves... perriman will trickle into the playbook, barring a major injury on another starter. our WR group is one of the strongest assets on our team.

Aiken showed potential last year, and Marlon Brown isn't bad. I think Perriman can make an impact this season. Plus steve can still produce. Don't forget about Darren Waller too. WR seems pretty good. Aiken, Perriman and Smith/Brown/Waller is a good lineup. And if worse comes to worse we still have 3 pass catching Tight Ends.just pray that Elvis, Flacco or Hill don't get injuried.

The weakest position is WR as it stands.  Before we talk rookies you have Steve Smith who's snaps the Ravens talked about reducing this year in order to make sure he holds up and then a bunch of WR who showed they can be okay 3rd and 4th WR but none of them really looked like they could jump to the number 2 WR spot on the team.  So even if Perriman turns out to be a little worse then Torrey, which would be a strong rookie season, you are still looking at a fairly weak position barring any late round picks and undrafted picks somehow making the transition which not impossible is not something one counts on.

After that its probably TE.  The TE group is Pitta who may or may not play, Gillmore who is okay but not spectacular and then 2 rookies who have never played a game which means you should never overestimate them.  I think they wont be weak as blockers but its possible the Ravens will be lacking a great pass catching TE this year.

Im still worried slightly about the corner position even though they did add depth there Arrington cant really play the outside and the corners all got hurt so they now are all injury prone but it is unlikely that such a perfect storm happens again but I would still rank it as the 3rd biggest area of weakness if only because the rest of the roster is filled with quality starters and quality depth.

I agree with ya, if he was still struggling and he had to come in... I'd imagine we would see a lot of running plays, screens, and intermediate passes since it sounds like his passes ain't got the zip on it. But I feel ok with him backing up flacco

Been saying it for a while, trade for Mettenberger.

He's good except for when we plastered him.   I suppose Ty Taylor was a bench wipe since Joe has been a model of reliable and steady since 08. Perhaps that is how management approaches this.

I wouldn't include Arizona on that list. After Palmor went down they barely limped into the playoffs, and that was only due to them already have a comfortable lead in wins before he got injured. The Cardinals went from possible Super Bowl favorites to having no shot of winning a playoff game. Vikings also lost what slim shot they had when they had to use a backup in the playoffs.
