[News] Cornerback Rashaan Melvin Confident As Ever

44 posts in this topic

You all do realize that for all but 1 unfortunate play against LaFell where he totally should have knocked the ball away, Melvin was simply a pawn in a game between Dean Pees and Josh McDaniels. Melvin was following Pees' "bend but don't break" orders and staying off the ball to not get beat deep. Brady reacted by taking what we were giving and dinking his way down field. Melvin was trying to control the damage inherent in our scheme by rushing to the receiver and limiting YAC. Unfortunately the Pats saw his eagerness to tackle and called that fleaflicker leading Harbaugh to say after the game that it was played at a "very high level of strategy."

Melvin was following orders. No CB in this league just decides all by their lonesome to start a play 7 to 10 yards off the ball. The coaches on the sideline and upstairs issue those orders.

the cb's pees had playing 7-10 yards off the ball were the guys pees knew would get torched off the line of scrimmage. we fell into bad luck with injuries to webb smith rolle and asa getting suspended. the depth we had did the best they could but they got torched by the deflated ball master. looks like we r better off in the secondary as of right now but come playoff time we shall see which of these guys can suit up and play. hopefully the team can stay healthier this season

after last season when we lost half a dozen corners it seems we are now LOADED at corner with guys that can start all the way down at #5

Webb, Smith and Arrington have started over a long period of time. Vaughn started a whole season for the Colts and has seen solid playing time every year. Melvin started last season and would be likely to take a spot if an outside guy went down because he can stuff people at the line with his long arms.

Then behind those guys we have people that can contribute at the slot and sub-packages like Levine, Jackson and Walker.

Melvin didn't show me much. Against Brady, he came up zilch. I could say he lost the game. Eight or nine months down the road isn't going to make him any better. He will perform equally bad against any opposing top QB. He may feel more confident starting to play somewhere else. I haven't been negged in awhile so bring it on.

you could say that, you did.. and you're wrong.

Dean Peas was pulling the strings on defense and to blame one defender for one play is egregious...

The defense let the Pats score like it was a high school football game! They had no discipline and let trick plays, missed tackles and Tom Brady running like molasses into the end zone.

If you want to go and blame an undrafted corner who we were FORCED to start because of injury, Go ahead!

I put more blame on the defense as a whole for that performance... and when it came down to it.

Torrey Smith couldn't make ONE catch... at least Melvin TRIED to make a play! I'd rather have a corner be in position and not make a play then him having NO IDEA where they are/should be *cough Matt Elam *cough *cough...

It takes Cb years to develop and Melvin is not any different but if this guy can come around I say put him on the outside with Jimmy and let Webb and Arrington battle out the slot position.

Hill and Lewis will be starting safeties for the Ravens this year. We are lucky to have them as Brooks is coming off injury and Elam has been ineffective.

Smith is a pro bowl level outside corner and Arrington is a proven slot corner.

That leaves Melvin, Webb, Vaughn, Jackson and Walker to compete for the other corner.

If Hill and Smith stay healthy the rest good enough to make a very good secondary. If Smith and/or Hill goes out the secondary will be a weakness again this year. But probably not as weak since we got Arrington, Lewis and Vaughn.

Harbaugh will put the best players on the field, regardless of how much money they make. He showed that last year when Monroe, who just signed a $37,500,000 contract, was healthy and available for the postseason, but he stuck with Hurst, an undrafted rookie, who I'm assuming was making close to the league minimum.

Not true, but I won't bicker over the semantics!

If Melvin has the better skills this year, he will play a great deal, especially in critical situations, but the big salary guys, like Webb, will get the starts and play a great dead, waving his hands at Receivers catching passes and missing tackles!

It's the way the game is played - a multi million dollar guy is not going to sit while a less-than-$1.5 Mil plays! That HC would lose his job if he doesn't win the Lombardi! B)

Our Safeties are a lot better than we think they are. True, there ain't no Ed Reed in the back anymore to call the plays, but K-Lewis and Will Hill are more than solid players who will be our starters. Hill has had a year to soak everything up and he will be calling the shots most likely. I think Kendrick Lewis will start making plays by midseason. Brooks will get his playing time and Elam NEEDS to be used PROPERLY. With the additions of Arrington and Vaughn, Our secondary will be a strength this year as long as we stay healthy. God willing!! Cheers.

Everybody has a bad game in this league just so happened that he had his bad game at the worst time.

YA...Melvin and the rest of the defense.

Not true? So you're saying that our $37million LT didn't get benched for an undrafted rookie? It is true. Harbaugh also benched our highest paid CB when he was a rookie coach, so I have no doubt he would do it now if it was necessary.

Webb himself was benched after playing like garbage in his first couple games last season, even though he was medically cleared to play. He played much better later in the year, and when he actually is healthy(which hasn't been often) he plays at a pro bowl level.

Higher payed players usually get more playing time because they are better, which is why they got a big contract in the first place. However, there are still plenty of examples where a big money player got passed up by a player that doesn't make much, and Harbaugh's job is not in jeopardy.
