[News] Maxx Williams Responds To Rookie Of The Year Chatter

33 posts in this topic

Great future ahead for this kid, and for Nick Boyle it looks like. Not sure if Pitta is out there this year that it'll be possible for Maxx to put up the kinds of numbers necessary for a TE to win OROY (Perriman probably has a better shot at this point), but he looks to be a really amazing 2nd round pick for us.

I wish the best for Pitta.... But We got a good young group of TE's! Gilmore/Williams and Boyle. Can't wait to see these guys on the field!

has a tight end ever won offensive rookie of the year?

Not that I could find when I actually looked it up.

I hope his obvious talent transfers well to the NFL. Having Flacco and Trestman gives him the best chance for that to happen. Even if he's as good as we expect he still may have a tough time outshining Gilmore. At 6'6" and 275 he's got Gronk size and IMO he is a very good receiver as well as blocker. Pitta may actually be our 3rd best TE even if he's completely healthy! What a possibility! They have to keep Boyle on the 53 man roster just in case Pitta goes down.

Looking at our WR group, IMO we have 6 guys that can start in the NFL. This gives Flacco and Trestman a wealth of talent which should translate to a big year for our offense. It's critical that the O line stays healthy. It's good to know Hurst and Urschel are solid starter-quality backups. I'm sure we will need them at some point.

If this team stays healthy they will be tough to beat. I can't imagine putting a much better team on the field. The front office has done an incredible job getting this much talent under one roof.

While I agree that Maxx has great upside potential.....we need to keep in mind they haven't put pads on yet.....OTA's are way different then full contact....

I hope the potential manifests itself....

Go Ravens

it is essentially impossible for a TE to win OROY, its just the nature of the position.

not only is it hard to win OROY, but the transition to the NFL is a brutal one at that position, the best college standouts tend to have average rookie seasons and show struggles, maxx wont be immune to the nature of the position, it doesnt help that he has average at best size and speed, he doesnt have a crutch to rely on for an advantage, he has to win with hands and technique, he has the hands for sure, and how quickly he develops that technique will determine how quickly he becomes a stud. we gotta temper our expectations here or else we will have a few people calling him a bust by midseason.

He's not gonna set the world on fire this year... year 2 or 3 is when he'll do it.For now gilmore or pitta will be the starter

well said Joey, agree 100%

Another factor hurting his chances of such a title is having all these targets for Flacco to throw to alone with a solid run game. Having the potential of such a balanced attack limits one persons stats but strengthens the team as a whole

Ya, I think it may take Maxx a little bit to come into his own here but the boy has some mad skills and I would be surprised if we didn't see him out there in force, later in the year.

Looks like we'll be throwing a lot more to a rotation of TE's and I think Maxx, although young, is going to seize his moment, sooner than later.

I just have a good vibe about him and I know it's still way too early to predict but, I think he'll be here for quite a while.

that as well, im not saying maxx williams is gonna bust, i wanted maxx williams in the first round and am a huge fan of his, but the fact is he isnt some 6'6" guy running a 4.5, he doesnt have something to rely on while he is facing the learning curve, he very well could post very mediocre numbers as a rookie, i could see something along 300 yards and maybe 4 td's, but i think even thats being generous.

also gilmore and boyle are clearly better blockers, which will also limit his opportunities.

by year 3 though? top 3 TE in the league, the guy is too natural a playmaker to not break out in a MAJOR way

Maxx is great but I think Crockett is going to throw down this year and break out. Maxx and Gilmore on some sweet diesel sets will be awesome. If pitta plays, limit his snaps for his health/family 's sake and keep him receiving where he shines.

Bottom line... it's good to have options!

Mink, really?! Again?? Please stop with the OROY/DROY/DPOY etc talk already! I understand that there is nothing to write about, but all that these kinds of articles do is hype up fans and players hope months before a meaningful game is played and more than HALF A YEAR before any awards are handed out. Just stop! Please!

Most likely, there will be a rotation early in the season at least, making it difficult for any one TE to shine. However, I do believe he can break out towards December, when the differences start to show. Ultimately I think we'll see more of both Maxx and Crockett as time goes on.

Lest we take all these mini-camp stories too seriously I found the following commentary on stories appearing at this time of year sobering: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2489793-everything-is-awesome-a-readers-guide-to-every-minicamp-story-ever

Good find.. The "everything is awesome" portion of the article is everything we've read on this site for the past two weeks. lol

Definitely liking our TE group for the next few years (WR group may also be looking good if a few players live up to their potential)

I believe that in a few years we will have a player like Gronk of the Patriot on our team or maybe a few of them, when I played football back in my high school days, [ 53 years ago ] it was the Juniors and Seniors that were the teachers, I learned so much more from them that I did from the coaches. I feel the same way about Mini Camps, In Mini Camps the veterans are the most important part of a Rookies upbringing and the Ravens are loaded with them and they will take the time to make sure the Rookies are lead down the right path, That Is the Ravens way

Way to early for talk like that. Actually, the talk coming out of Mad Maxx sounds a lot more sensible. He's saying the right things and with that attitude I think he'll do well.
