[News] Returner Competition Wide Open

I think it would be best to use someone other than Webb, I do not want to risk a starting CB this year.

Preseason games, pick Toussaint to run the ball back also Asa Jackson.

See how they do in prep for the season. I can't picture Steve Smith Sr. returning kickoffs at age 36. Someone may disagree with me, but it's insane to even mention Webb as a return specialist unless the front office & coaching staff have completely lost their minds.

Didn't we pick a small school WR who had Return skills? Yes, to even mention SSmithSr and Webb is preposterous!

If you watch the press conference, what Rossburg said is anything but preposterous. The response about using Webb or Smith had nothing to do with either being a primary return guy. Rather, he was referring to crucial moments in a game when a mistake may ruin the team's chance at winning. In those specific situations, he indicated that it would be better to have a veteran fielding a kick than a wide-eyed rookie who might not be aware of all of the variables. This is why those guys are getting reps in OTAs

It's basically the same thing they've done for years - remember seeing Webb or even Ed Reed go back to field a punt late in a game, even though they weren't the primary return man?

Then, I wish Id had seen the the video rather than read someone's else's appraisal!

Thanks and I fully agree that a veteran presence should be there to "Fair Catch" the kick or punt rather than try to make a play! That's, of course, if that vet is reliable enough to shelve his ego during that play!  ^_^

Fitzgerald Toussant would be good as both but that means you have 4 running backs plus a fullback. I would love to see him play snaps as well but I don't see it happening. Asa Jackson is extremely valuable considering if Smith or Webb get hurt. He has to be the no. 2 corner to allow Kyle Arrington to be your no. 3 shutdown cb or let Vaughn play no. 2. I think Carter seems ideal because the opening being made by the number of receivers being hurt if Campanaro does not come back in time to claim the job.

There's a chance Asa doesn't male the team this year. When Webb or Jimmy go down Melvin is going in, he's shown WAY more potential already. And after Melvin Vaughn is going in because he has starting experience. If Asa can't be THE returner he's not making the team.

Damn, "When" Webb or Jimmy go down, remove this comment. I would think Arrington is ahead of Melvin on the depth chart

I disagree with your whole idea with the potential. Asa Jackson was the no. 3 cornerback last year. He has more experience so your idea of putting Melvin in over him sounds crazy. It's too early to declare him higher. Unless, he shows me some interceptions in preseason or something. I think Asa is in better position due to playing time.

Asa unreliable and is only an almost serviceable #3 CB after his 3rd season, we grabbed Melvin off a practice squad and he played his first games ever here and was the #2, and he did pretty dang good before going against the arguable GOAT.

Asa played the no. 2 spot as well after Ladarius went down. He played pretty well before getting hurt. Before you say his potential is not as high check out Asa Jackson's highlight reel from college. I know a lot of people don't like to check that far back but when you draft a player just like Breshad Permian and Maxx William thats what you expect your player to contribute in comparison to what they did in college if not better. Secondary players take more time to develop. Which in any case Asa has never played a full season. Rashard played on the team late which I can't say he is more reliable because he also hasn't played a full season yet. We'll just have to wait and see but I will bet due to the number of injuries last year. Both will be kept. Probably 6 cb's (Tray Walker) because Baltimore does not likes to keep all their draft picks.
